I'm not sure what your question is but if it's why you cant send stamps is because drug dealers put drugs on the back of the stamps some how and send them in then the drugy lick the drugs off.

Please explain your question further if the above answer isn't adequate. He can purchase an unlimited number of stamps at the commissary.

Inmates have to purchase their own stamps in the commissary in order to send out mail. In a lot of prisons, though, stamps are used as currency between inmates as well. Tara

Another thought is that DESI DOUGLAS may be referring to the use of stickers (stamps), which are not allowed at many facilities for fear that it a way to smuggle certain drugs.

Keep the Faith

I also am not sure about your question, but as others have said stamps are used as money in most prisons. When i was in the 32 cent stamp was worth .25 to buy items from other inmates like items stolen from the kitchen or a service that an inmate would provide for you like cleaning your room or building shelves in your locker ect. the stamps are also used for gambling. Inmates are allowed to have 3 books of stamps and if caught with more then that can be locked up in the shu because they think you are gambling or running a store out of your locker ect. inmates will sell almost anything to get the money (stamps) to purchase items from a guy going to the store because they have no money coming in and have to rely on a hussle to get the stamps. I hope this helps you to understand the stamp system. i understand some prisons have gone to prestamped envelopes and no longer have stamps to try to slow down the gambling, there is no way it will stop the stamp system.

In summary:

1. Stamps are allowed in federal prison
2. They must be purchased through the commissary
3. There is a limit to how many an inmate is allowed to have in his possession. More than what is allowed will be an incident report (which could lead to being placed in SHU, loss of GCT, Loss of visitation, phone priviledges, etc.)
4. Stamps are used as money by the inmates, amoung other things. (No secret here)
5. Stamps cannot be mailed in from home, nor brought in via visitors.

I hope that we have all helped clear things up a little for you.

My sister in law has been sending letters to my son and using a return address sticker. Until I told her yesterday to quit using them. Do you think he got her letters and cards? Do they take off the stamps before giving them to the inmate and would they take off these stickers? Just wondering how it all works. Thanks! (P>S>, he is in a camp)

When I sent a letter which was rejected because of a return address sticker, the letter was sent back to me with a rejection notice from the BOP, stating the reason it was rejected. I think the inmate is also notified that mail has been rejected. So if she didn't get the mail back, she can assume he received it. Some mailrooms allow those return labels and some do not. (Or some staff allow it and some do not - you never know so it's best to play it safe and just not use them.) Zelda

I might be able to answer questions about FMC Lexington and maybe some of you can answer some of my own questions. My son has served 1 year and 4 months with 6 years to go. I visit often, so maybe I can help someone with their concerns.
