View Full Version : sending a money order ....help!
imani4ever 03-16-2006, 01:55 PM Hi guyz!! my husband and I have decided that it would be good to atleast cover the postage cost from our friend in texas as it costs abit more to mail to the U.K. Our problem is that our local post-office was unable to help us with this and the bank could only transfer money from one account to another or to a bank card. A lady from this forum suggested we use western union but we could not work out where/when to put our friend's I.D number and account at TDCJ, could anyone who has sent money from U.K or if anyone else has sent their friend some money help us in this issue ...please...............many thanks:D
rebswar 03-16-2006, 03:16 PM hey,, all you have to do is put there name and adc # on the first line that is all
when you send it make sure you write him a letter also and tell him you sent a money order......put the money order in an envelope and write INMATE BANKING on the front of it with his name and adc # and put in same envelope with his letter hope this helps.............
I have a penpal in TX and he sent me coupons (for lack of a better word) that needed to accompany any money order sent in. I also noticed contrary to what I'm familiar with in Colorado the money order does not go to the inmate and facility where he is housed but rather an inmate trust fund in Huntsville, TX... I opted to use jpay.com rather than mess with the paperwork that needed to be filled out and returned with the money order... jpay.com is pretty self explanatory and as long as you have a credit or debit card it should not be a problem... If you need any help, feel free to PM me.

You CANNOT do it this way in Texas. You can't send a money order to any unit with the mail. It has to be sent to the Inmate Trust Fund and must have a slip (similar to a deposit slip) with it that has the inmate's info on it.
Please DO NOT sent it with his mail. He won't get it and it will just delay both his getting the letter and the money.
key jo 03-16-2006, 04:14 PM I would suggest using jpay.com But, if you need the deposit slips, I always have a bunch on hand. P.m. me your address and I can mail them to you. As for the western union way, you'd have to put the id # as the account number. I think it says how to do it on the TDCJ website or in the handbook available on that website.
elsapunzi 03-17-2006, 09:53 AM i usewestern union as a rule if you tell them when you phone its for a prison inmate they will put his id number in correct space, sometimes i send a bankers chegue and where it says his account you get thwem to put his id number again when i first did it by the bank i explained it was to an inmatew and gave them his full address name and number and the staff knew exactly what to do.
hope it helps, i am in u k too.

First and foremost, thank you all for all your helpful suggestions:D
@Elsapunzi, if I were to get a banker's cheque, do I then send with the slip to texas? of the bank and western union, which of the two woul you recommend? Western union charge 12 quid as handling fee! what are the rates for a bankers cheque?.........many thanks for your help in this issue:D
elsapunzi 03-18-2006, 02:08 AM personally i would recommend western union i usually use them and they have a free phone number which you can get from their web site, and if you use them the money is put into the inmate acount withing 2 hours, they allways tell me it has gone striaght in, and the handling fees ar the same as a bankers chegue £10, i think you will find them easy to deal with and they are very helpful on the phone.
hope it helps, i know whenever i send by western union over the phone they only charge me £10 and so do the bank, but still western uinion are much easier

have a lovely weekend one and all:D

I'm not sure if this is in response to my post, but if it is, yes, jpay.com is accepted in Texas and I have used it. I can't remember how much it costs, but I know that it is worth doing it. It saves the hassle of buying a money order and filling in and posting the form ad is much cheaper than Western Union. It is charged on a percentage of the amount you are sending.
Helen.
imani4ever 03-19-2006, 12:59 AM Many many thanks!!! we finally send some dollars using jpay.com. it was very easy to use, very fast and much cheaper compared to western union :D , so i was able to send a few more dollars than expected. they only charge $4!!! which is about £1.50 compared with western union who charge £12 = roughly $20, so i'll know tomorrow by tracking my payment as to whether it had gone thru to my friend's trust fund.............again, many thanks to you all for the advice..........the people on PTO rock!
