In this letter to the Philladelphia Dailly News, Amnesty International responds to those who favor life without parole for juveniles...

This line especially stood out:

"in 11 out of the 17 years from 1985 to 2001, youths convicted of murder were more likely to enter prison with a life without parole sentence than were adult murder offenders."

Letters | Amnesty on life for juveniles

THE DAILY News recently published an article on juveniles serving life sentences that referred to Amnesty International's position on life without parole for juveniles ("Pa. leads nation in juveniles serving life sentences," Feb. 15).

Philadelphia District Attorney Lynne Abraham stated, "I have very little sympathy for the Amnesty International position, when these little assassins come in with machine guns and submachine guns and kill people. Murder is murder."

Amnesty International recognizes the seriousness of crimes such as murder and the need for children who commit these crimes to be appropriately punished. But acknowledging the profound differences between childhood and adulthood, and the special needs and vulnerabilities of children, Amnesty International does not support sentencing children to life without the possibility of parole.
