I tried a couple of new fry bread recipes this past few days and thought I'd share if anyone wants to try them. I guess this would be the place to share them.

CHOCTAW FRY BREAD

2 cups cornmeal
1 cup flour
1 grated raw onion
1 grated potato
handful of sugar
1 tsp. salt
1 Tbsp. baking powder
1 cup of milk, or enough to make a wet dough.

Drop by spoonfuls in hot oil and fry till brown. I just made patties and fried them. They'd be great with chili or stew.

PUMPKIN FRY BREAD

3 cups flour
1 cup pumpkin (NOT the pie mix but plain pumpkin)
1/2 cup honey, maple syrup or white granulated sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. or more to taste of cinnamon
2 tsp. baking powder
1 cup warm water or milk, more if needed to make moist dough
1 Tbsp. cooking oil

Combine all and mix thorougly. Knead till smooth. Lightly rub surface of dough with oil and let rest 30 minutes or several hours in a bowl covered with a damp cloth.

Heat oil in heavy pot or skillet till it's about 3 inches deep (I use shallower oil and just turn them over in about 2 minutes.) With lightly floured hands, pinch off golf ball sized pieces and gently pat them out flat, handling them as little as possible to keep the dough light. I like to poke a hole in the center with my finger before putting them into the hot oil. You can make them into small balls and fry them that way, too, if you don't want to pat them thin. Gently ease them into the hot oil, being careful not to splatter. Fry quickly for two to four minutes, then remove with tongs or a slotted spoon and serve sprinkled with powdered sugar or put butter and cinnamon sugar on them. EXCELLENT treat!

Thanks for sharing! I'm printing these out to share with my mother-in-law. She's a cook at our elder center....

Man, this brought back memories.

Aunt Margrete used to make some MEAN fry bread when she'd visit from Montana. She's gone now so there's a recipe gone :(

I wish I had paid more attention to how she made it. She never used measuring cups and instead measured everything with her hands.

We used to drizzle honey on the warm bread and eat it this way.

Thanks for the recipe.. I'm gonna have to find lard for the oil now :) It's hard to find it but I do remember that's the only oil she'd use for frying.

A good basic fry bread usually contains flour, water, salt and baking powder. But some also contain milk, sugar, powdered milk------some are made with a yeast dough, too. My granny used just salt, flour and water.
