Hi Folks,
I have a friend in USP McCreary that I have been writing with for the last 6 months. I was planning a trip down to North Carolina anyways so figured I could visit him while I was down that way (I'm from NY). I sent in 3 visit forms, one of which was overnighted at the request of his counselor and still did not get approved. I also never got anything in the mail telling me I wasn't approved I had to wait to hear from my friend.
I have heard that there is a new rule in that prison saying that you had to know the prisoner prior to incarceration. Does anyone know if this is true? I have read it before but my friend said he had never heard it. I would appreciate any info on McCreary also.
Thanks

Yeah the say you have to kow the person prior to incarceration but I know people who have met while on the inside and was able to still visit. so that may not always be true.

I also have someone at McCreary and im sure you have to know the inmate before his incarceration. At least you were honest about it , i probably wouldnt have been.

as far as info on McCreary my husband is in the camp he said there are 150 guys in there...they all are in one big room with bunks(lol he is on a top bunk ..i would love to see his 6'4" 318# self climb up on that)they each have a 6 foot locker and share a desk space with their bunk mate..they each have a bulletin board for pictures...he started his job on Monday ..he chose the food warehouse (he likes manual labor) after 3-4 months they told him he could get a job off the camp. He said that there are walking trails ...no fences...they are told their boundries..they can play softball basketball horseshoes and such as that he walks about 5-10 miles a day..he walks an hour and a half in the morning and the same in the evening. He said the food is like a high school cafeteria not too bad ...he had to buy a radio with headphones to be able to watch the TV so you can hear it over your radio. He gets his tennis shoes next week ...he is having to walk in his boots right now. He ordered his ha ha gym clothes...he has his phone account set up...says that he can talk up to 30 min ...i dont let him....i would rather hear alittle from him each night .... he is in good spirits said the people are very nice.. A few quys with questionable sexual preference...but for the most part all the guys are guys that just made stupid decisions..lots of white collar criminals in there like him...

vckyhutch,

I am so glad to hear you and he are making the adjustment. I had a few PM's from him prior to his departure and know that he was a little "shakey" about the "Unknowns" early on. Looks like another step toward the ultimate end point of coming home.

Keep the Faith

Michael

Hey sweetie,

My husband was transferred to USP MCcreary satellite camp in December and I did not have to fill out a new form, (Thank the Lord). But one of his cell inmates sent a form out twice to someone he removed from his list prior to relocating to MCcreary, and they still have not approved her although she was previously on the list. I have not heard anything about knowing the inmate prior to their incarceration, but I can say this much. I'm not saying this to be rude, so please forgive me if I say this the wrong way. If USP McCreary has 150 inmates, 125% are caucasian, and 25% is african american. So just to sum it up, the staff is 100% causasian and from my experience of visiting McCreary, the staff has an irrational attitude of hostility directed against african americans. If your friend is in this culture this could be the reason why.

It is not a new rule - the BOP has had the rule for years that visitors have to have known the inmate prior to incarceration. But they also have an "exception" to the rule - if the inmate does not have any approved visitors who knew him/her prior and if the BOP determines that the visiting would be of benefit to the inmate's rehabilitation. So if the inmate you're writing has no other visitors, then he should submit a request for an exception to be made and give the reasons why the visits would be beneficial to him. You could also write a similar letter. Then it's up to the BOP. Zelda

Hi All,
I Am Planning A Trip To Mccreary To Take My Son To Visit His Father. It Is 9 Hours Away From Where I Am But He Has Been Asking About His Father And Has Not Seen In Him In 5 Years. They Sentenced Him To 10 Years For Several Drug Counts. However I Was Wondering Has Anyone Visited There And What Should I Expect. I Have Heard That They Are Very Prejudice There And To Be Carefull And Whatever Motel I Stay In Not To Come Out After Dark. Is There Any Truth To These Things? And Where Is A Good Motel To Stay In?

I'm happy to see this thread! My husband is at the camp at McCreary also... Has been there about a year. Was inside for a year and a half before that... I would love all info about this camp as I am not allowed to visit him. I'm on parole and my PO won't let me leave the state. I haven't seen him in over three years...

Mc Creary USP.I had a dear friend there. When Mariana FCI was hit by a hurricane
4 yrs ago, he got transfered there. He was the barber to the Black Americans.<some may know him> He said there were just more rules than FCI, more security. I was approved to viist..I was planning on flying into Lexington KY over an hour away from USP..they have motels in Pine Knot. He was finally transfered back to Fl.So, my trip was canceled. The word from him was..it wasn't so bad...but he missed his family in Fl..

So how close is it to Lexington? Do you know which way? I went to school out there and now I am so curious since his family isn't that far away. Thanks for the insight though. My loved one is Black but I doubt that he saw a barber while he was there.

Lexington is about 2 hours north of McCreary. You would take I 75 S towards Richmond/Knoxville and then get on KY 92
