hey Imarie,
I think Barbara knows more about this but I think its if you live more that 300 miles away but Im sure Barabara will confirm it.
In the SHU it allows you to visit the AM and PM visits, so you get 2 visits in a day instead on one.
Im sure other factors would possibly allow you hardship visits as well, I have just wrote a small letter to this guy and hopefully he will approve it, I put in my dates of visiting so hopefully he will approve it on time!
According to the visitor's information pages, a "Special Circumstance Visit" is for:
Excessive Distance...250 miles or more and has not visited in the past 30 days...MUST BE PREAPPROVED
Disabled...visitor is disabled as defined by California law and must rely on special transportation to the prison...approval required 5 working days prior to the visit
Family Emergency...preapproved
Good luck!
Sorry...that's "Good luck! - Jane"!
OH I am so excited I just booked my appointment for this weekend to see my son. It has been a whole year now since I last saw him. I will be getting the double visit because I live 800 miles from the prison. You can just imagine I am bouncing off the walls right now :) Love Barbara
Oh, Barbara...that's WONDERFUL!!! I'm grinning ear to ear for you - and for your son!

Thats great Barb! Have a wonderful time!!
Thay are giving my ex's Mom a hard time about visiting him because of an 10 plus year old criminal charge,it's going to take another 6 to 8 weeks to see if she gets approved, she has to get a print out from the justice dept. and fingerprints etc.! I told him one way or another I'd make it there to see him in the next 2 months,I'm just hoping his Mom can come with me and obviously so is she and he!!

Well, Barb, hope you had a wonderful visit. I just got back last night from my nearly 2-1/2 weeks in California, unfortunately, I never heard back as to whether or not I was approved for my visit, so I did not get to see Max. He has not had a visitor in the entire 2 years he's been there. I did get to reunite with his family though, and got some more-up-to-date pictures than the ones I have from 16 years ago!!
Our letter-writing has been going excellently!!! And I won't elaborate, but it seems we still feel the same about each other as we did years ago, and our relationship is getting better and better with each letter!!!
I found out exactly how he got 108 years to life. It seems that each count of robbery (4 total) got the 25 years to life under the 3 strikes law, and they are to be served consecutively, instead of concurrently. That's why the unfortunate amount of time. We need to work on somehow getting him re-sentenced to concurrent, so that he will have a chance at parole at a sooner date. So if anyone has any suggestions, or help for us how to do this, or any connections for me, PLEASE let me know. It would be greatly appreciated. I found out from someone in California that he (this person in California) was also sentenced to 25 years to life under the 3 strikes law for a robbery-type crime, and he was paroled after 8 years. Max is now starting his eighth year in prison, and it would be wonderful if we could do something about his sentence!!! Thanks for any and all help.
