Reception is the term used for newly arrived inmates and where they are housed. They are not classified for a specific level yet, they are all there waiting to see a counselor and the classification comitee. Because CA Pirsons are so overcrowded it can take anyhwere from 90-120 days or more before they are endorsed to a final yard and level.

As to visiting you must be approved before you can visit an inmate in a CA Prison and that process takes anywhere from 30-60 days. You man is given the form to mail to you shortly upon arrival so you should see that in about 2 weeks after he arrives. Once approved visits with reception center inmates are 1 hour non-contact behind glass. And yes you will need an apointment at NKSP.

Here is a thread with lots of info for you so you can understand everything that is going on right now. We are glad you found PTO and let me know if I can help you in anyway.

I just visited my man in NKSP last Sunday. He has been in reception since Feb 1 and the visit was behind glass but that did not matter to me as I needed to see him desperately. Anyway, I did not need an appointment to see him. I did send in the visitors application and got approved for visits. Upon arrival at the prison, I filled out a short form with my name, inmates name and number, my address and gave it to the COs along with my license. I waited about 10 minutes, took my shoes off, went through the metal detector, got my shoes back then went into another visiting area to wait until they brought my Honey out to see me. The entire time I was there was no more than 2 hours including the 1 hour visit. I was rather impressed considering the BS I have dealt with at County. Anyway, I hope this info helps. When I arrived there I had no idea what to expect.
