In the Feds there is a term sometimes used for inmates "Lost in the System" because they are being punished...

"Diesel Therapy"

The feds have a nasty habbit of placing inmates they "designate" as trouble makers in need of modified adjustment on BUSES that travel across the country transporting inmates.. Only letting them off at county jails for the night and sometimes not then...
The term diesel therapy comes from the fumes you breath whenever riding on these usually beatup buses the U.S. Marshals are in charge of..

The ride lenght varies from a month to a year and a half! Non-Stop driving.. In Shackles..

This happens more often than you would imagine!

and for what reasons do they get this punishment? Do they have to do something violent to like a CO or another inmate to be put on Diesel Therapy?

Isn't this when they are in-transit to their designated facility?

Isn't this also called "catching the train"?

I can not believe they can do this and get away with it. that is scary how they can just do that and no one misses them. i would be getting a serious law suit together.

We live in WV. Billy was picked up by the feds in NC. They moved him to Charlotte for month...to Altanta for a day...up to New York for a layover...then to Oklahoma for a month. They finally brought him back here to WV. This was all before his FIRST court date.

When he got back here, they put him in a county jail in the capital city of Charleston. He spent 2 months there, then brought him down to my city for 2 months, then back to the capital for his final sentencing. He stayed there for another month until they finally brought him where he is today. 15 minutes from me.

Now I don't understand why they did that. He never caused any trouble at all. Initially, the trip from here to NC is only a 3 1/2 hour drive. So why fly him all over the country?

That kept everyone on edge. Thankfully he's been at this prison for a little over a year now. But they'll move him again when he goes for evaluation in october. He may be sent to a LOW.

this is an insane practice! why in the world would the feds do such a thing? what purpose could it possibly serve beyond torture???

That's called a train. Todd went through the same thing...

Started in Bakersfield, then to Fresno, back to Bakersfield, down to San Bernardino, to San Diego, back to San Bernardino, back to San Diego, back to San Bernardino, then to Glen Helen, back to San Bernardino, finally ended at Lompoc.

After sentencing, we were afraid he was going to Safford AZ. Guess I prayed enough that God answered my prayers & is keeping Todd 3 hrs away instead of 13!

It's just horrible. I guess they have nothing better to do than to waste tax payers' money. There should be a way to punish the feds for doing that. It's a total waste of time and money.

THAT IS RIDICULOUS AND FROM THEIR (DOC/GOVT) MONEY-HUNGRY VIEWPOINT CERTAINLY CAN'T BE COST-EFFECTIVE

Spoke with Todd about this at our visit yesterday...

The diesel therapy & catching the chain (not train) are two different things.

He heard of the diesel therapy...it's generally used for inmates that are causing problems.

Catching the chain is for individuals that have been sentenced and are in transit to their designated facility.

The Feds use this to put pressure on inmates they deem to be a real problem. It isn't something that usually happens to someone for general infractions. You really have to piss them off and beome a "threat" of some sort. I have heard it is your last warning before they send you below ground.
By that I mean the super-max. I'd rather have diesel therapy any day than total sensory deprevation. You have not felt "pain" until you go underground for up to 5 years with NO HUMAN contact. You read your letters over a monitor, and get your food on a mechanical cart.
Don't believe it? It's there! It's known as the ADX.. and it is as close to Hell as one can get..
Fed time is "easy time", but you mess with them in there.. and they will take it to a whole different level.

I agree...how can you expect this person will act normal around other while he's been without any kind of contact with people for 5 years??? sounds like something straight out a Science Fiction movie to me!

As soon as the feds got him in custody, they started shipping him around. BEFORE his first court date. Why? It would've been much simplier to put him on a bus from NC to WV where we are at. NO, NO, that wouldn't do--they sent him all the way to Oklahoma BEFORE any court date.

Of course, Billy will be messed up in the head after his time. He's doing everything that they ask. He's being a "model" inmate IF there is such a thing. I just don't understand WHY they had to move him all the way to OKLAHOMA.

But it's over...he's here with me in WV. Just a 15 minute drive away. I would just like to have some answers!!!

Diesal Therapy, is used mostly in the federal system while your bouncing from state to state for months or years you are incommunicado no phone, no lawyers, no mail, no canteen, no nothing. They use it for people THEY view as trouble makers. I first heard about it in a book called "We Are All Doing Time" by Bo Lozof who runs a prison group I think in the Carolinas. He sends free copies of his books to any inmates who write him. There was a congressman who was sent to federal prison who was sent on diesel therapy & it really messed him up. He was eventually let free when he won his appeal. Here is his site he talks all about diesel therapy with pictures of his injuries. If you run a search on his name you will probably find more on the subject. His name is George Hanson & his story will send chills up your spine, if they feel they can do this to a congressman they have no fear of a normal inmate.

When I went from Corcron to Ironwood it took most of the day & I was ready to die so I can't imagine doing that for months or years.

They did that to David when they moved him from Texas to Danberry (spelling). That was about 20 years ago.

me neither. I think they ask on job interviews if you are inhuman and if you are, you get the job....luckly this isn't true for all..

Well, nothing surprises me anymore, but it amazes me how human beings can treat their own kind in such a way.

This procedure needs to be outlawed if nothing else because of the obvious waste of money

Have you ever wondered what kind of punishment men will receive one day when they have to get an account of their life to God?

THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT I AM WAITING FOR.... A DAY OF ANSWERING TO GOD FOR ALL THE INJUSTICES THAT HAVE OCCURED OVER HISTORY..... NOT ONLY IN OUR TIME BUT ALL OTHERS TOO AND THE ONES TO COME.....

THIS IS WHY WE MUST DO WHAT WE CAN TO TRY AND CORRECT THIS AND OTHER ATROCITIES....

YES, I AGREE, THERE MUST BE PUNISHMENT. BUT, WHY DO IT THIS WAY?

In January of last year my husband was arrested in Holbrook Arizona. He was extradited to Northern New York to answer a bench warrant.
He was in the care and control of Transcor, who is the private company that most U.S. jails & prisons use to transport inmates from around the country.
My husband said that his 14 days in custody of Transcor was clearly the most horrible experience of his life. He spent 14 days shackled, belly chained and handcuffed inside of several different vans and buses along the way. He was barely fed any food & water, with very infrequent bathroom breaks, no shower, and no change of clothes for the entire 14 day trip!
There was an elderly man along with him during most of this trip who had medical problems. He was unable to control his bladder. This poor man was left in his own urine soaked clothing on this bus for 4 complete days!
Their hands have these black boxes attached to their handcuffs which severely limit their movement while traveling in these vans and buses. They also wear these black boxes when they finally do get some food to eat. They are forced to push their heads down as far as possible while pulling their shackled hands up as far as they can reach in order to attempt eating.
This horrible treatment is an OUTRAGE! It is illegal to transport CIRCUS ANIMALS in this horribly inhumane manner! Why on EARTH is it allowed to happen to human beings?
We complained to the US Civil Rights administration who flatly replied: "We know that it is sometimes uncomfortable, but we understand that the corrections system uses this practice as an affordable method of extradition." In other words, NO ONE SEEMS TO CARE!!!!!!
We have spoken to the Law team of Jacoby & Meyers, and they are interested in filing a class action lawsuit.
Is anyone interested in joining our fight? We HAVE to stop this sickening practice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kimberly Zittlow
