I am headed into prison soon and I am trying to pull all my addresses together. Can I mail any one and can anyone mail me. Do I need to get my mailing list approved like the phone and visiting list? Thanks for the input...

To my understanding you can mail anyone and anyone can mail you. I've had a complete stranger mail me before so I'm sure there's no list that needs to be approved. What prison are you going to or do you know yet?

The only common restriction is that you're not supposed to correspond with other inmates. Other than that, you should be able to exchange mail with anyone. I have received mail from utterly random people I never expected to hear from; the mail room COs don't care. (More specifically, the mail room COs are unaware of the specifics of those with whom you correspond.)

In a camp, and perhaps a low, outgoing mail can be fully sealed when you put it in the mailbox. At any higher level federal, you have to leave the envelope unsealed; mail room COs will read through what you're sending out, supposedly to ensure you're not conspiring to commit any crime.

Incoming mail at any federal is opened to check it for contraband. When you get your mail at mail call (typically after 4pm count, weekdays), it'll have be opened and examined and then re-closed with tape or staple, just to keep the envelope contents together.

What one inmate was writing to their spouse that was an inmate in another facility? Would they allow that?

You will need to get the permission of the Wardens in each facility.

An inmate (not my baby though) that shall remain nameless will send his brother a letter by enclosing it with one he will send to his mom or grandmother who will then forward the letter to the other inmate....:D

ok. my question is the content limited to what i can say to my man? Are we able to discuss sex and other things that are private between mates?

honeysuckle-- you can discuss whatever you want in your letters. The mail room staff only scan the letters and is definitely used to sex talk. Basically they are looking for things to cause suspicion like illegal activity and such.
