my son was just told by he counsellor he was downgraded from Max A to Max B-she said there only 3 Max B's in NY--Clinton, Coxsackie and somewhere else I do not remember. He asked if that meant he would get moved--she said if they need his bed there, yes. but no telling. He will be less than 6 years and supposedly eligible for a medium in Jan-so she thought they might just leave him there till then. But she did not know.

Anyone have experience with this? I did a search but a hundred posts came up and non seemed to be my exact question.

does anything change? I.E., is he likely to be transferred, or, since he will be medium eligible (per his counsellor) in January, will they wait for that? They told him this change, based on no tickets, but I wondered why tell him? Will there be any changes in location or anything else?

Thank you for any info. He asked his counsellor but she only said he could be moved to a Max B facility if they need a bed where he is. Is that all there is to it?

while we have a pro on hand- what exactly does determine whether an inmate or a facility is a or b? I have always wondered what it was that made Coxsackie so "special." Every time I mentioned it to someone familiar with DOCS, they would go, "Coxsackie? Yuck!" CO, if you'd be nice enough to explain I would be forever grateful.

The only difference between Max-A and Max-B is security procedures! Max-B will have more programs and more out of cell time. Interesting that the counselor told him he'd be "medium eligable" in January -- that's quite a drop in security (from max-a to medium) in just a few months!?

MY HUSBAND SEEN THE COUNSLOR LAST WEEK AND SHE TOLD HIM HE WAS GOING TO A MEDIUM B FACILITY. HES STILL IN RECEPTION. CAN ANY ONE TELL ME WHAT A MEDIUM B IS AND WHERE THEY ARE ARE LOCATED? I DIDNT EVEN KNOW THEY HAD DIFFERENT MEDIUM FACILITYS

but Medium B is a less security risk classification than medium A--same with Max A and Max B. do not know which facilites are which though.

If you look at the DOC website, the facilities list will tell you which ones are mediums and where they are- not sure about a or b, though

I spoke to my boyfriends counselor about the same thing the counselor told me that alot of the times due to prison overcrowding and stuff like that sometimes a medium b could wind up in a medium a and vice versa so that really doesnt have much bearing on where he goes it all depends on where a bed opens up.

Medium B is pretty much the same as a Medium A only the fences are a little shorter. The only medium B I know of is Butler ASACTC, there are a couple of others too.

It really doesn't matter what medium you're classified as you can go to any medium or max.

they sent him from Comstock (which was fine) to Coxsackie which is horrible. He was transferred with a whole lot of other reclassified A to B folks from Comstock. i think this is a bigger issue in Max where they always need Max A beds.

LOL :D My mistake is has something to do with the fences though, right? One medium B I was in had a regular height chain link fence w/o barbwire and then the permiter fence.

Med A's have two fences with barbwire.

Are you asking about a medium A as opposed to a medium B facility in NYS?
