View Full Version : Does the NYS DOC allow Cassette tapes? Where can I get them?
trinidad1981 12-15-2003, 12:27 AM Hey everyone,
I don't know what's going on but it is very hard to find music in the form of cassette tapes anymore. My husbands correctional facility only accepts cassette tapes and it has to be mailed by the distributer. Can anyone help me with this???
Thanks
outshineswisdom 12-15-2003, 09:02 AM I had the same problem you have, for weeks I was looking on the net for companies with cassette tapes. It's like no one makes them or sells them anymore. Well, I finally found one, Circuit City, they still sell them and they range from $7 - $12 dollars a cassette. Their prices are real good. The only thing is that they don't deliver to a P.O.Box, so if your mans facility address is a P.O. then you either have to call and find out the real address or put down what route or road like I had to do. Good Luck on what your looking for. Oh and United Bros is the best bus to ride with, I read your other post and I ride with Corky all the time and there is never a problem on his bus. He don't play no games and there's no favorites either. If you need other info just let me know.

trescheek 12-15-2003, 12:11 PM I was having the same problem when my man was asking for cassettes - he managed to get the address of the following company, which services the correctional facilities and does ship to PO Boxes. I have used them with no problems - only thing is they don't have a website but you can call for a catalog (he had the catalog and just gave me the tape item #'s that he wanted):

nikkinakiya 06-17-2004, 03:30 PM Do they even still make these because I sure as hell can't find them anywhere!!!! Someone please enlighten me and tell me why DOCs doesn't allow CD's??? If someone knows where I might be able to find cassettes from Kanye West and other new releases please let me know.
Here4you4ever 06-17-2004, 05:17 PM I order mine from Amazon, that is the only place I know that is reliable. He has a catalog that is available to inmates but they don't have a website or phone number. Go to Amazon.com and search under casettes. Not that the selection is all that great! CDs would be so much easier, wouldn't they! This whole cassette stuff is ridiculous.
luneant 06-17-2004, 06:30 PM i order from "music by mail", they have a huge selection, but they are kinda slow. they dont have a website, but you can call for a catalog. their number is 718-921-2182
LeaAnn 06-17-2004, 08:25 PM I do not understand the cassette tape thing either because there are only a couple of stores that carry them. Maybe CD's could be dangerous? Music By Mail does seem to be the main store to get them for your loved one in NY.
M_Lutes 06-17-2004, 09:37 PM songsearch.com
 music by mail.
Joe gets catalogs from others and sends me the order forms. i then call them in. calling them in makes it QUICKER!
yes, casettes r hard to find, and when i do find them in basic places like "media play" or "wal-mart", they won't send them to facilities, so doesn't do much good! :)
FirstLady85 06-18-2004, 05:09 PM I go my local music store now.I have used J&R Music World and they were good, but you have to use the actual address of the facility not the P.O box, and you have to order through the 800# (not online). You can used your local record store as long as they send it out through the post office themselves (not you).I think the facilities think that CDs can be broken and used for weapons. That's stupid if you ask me because they are so fragile.I can't tell you how many times I've dropped a CD the wrong way and broke it.Cassette plastics are MUCh sturdier so if the wanted to cut somebody, that would be the perfect thing to use. But if it's logical DOCS doesn't follow it.

Manzanita 02-01-2005, 05:29 PM take a look at the vendor list above, many of those companies do sell and mail TAPES, not just CDs.
Hanksmom 02-01-2005, 07:40 PM Try music by mail . They are in brooklyn. I have the paper, but can't find a phone number.
outshineswisdom 02-04-2005, 11:05 PM I always order from circuitcity.com, they have really good deals.
julie192 02-07-2005, 09:27 PM They sell tapes in tower records in 68th and broadway {i think its 68} across the street from barnes and noble.
RBLSinLuv 02-07-2005, 09:51 PM You may want to check with the prison because the music company may have to approved...
Manzanita 02-07-2005, 09:58 PM so circuitcity.com sells tapes?

Nightingale 05-24-2005, 11:44 AM I placed an order with Tower records.com. Just checked web site for update on order. They cancelled it. I called them on phone. They said they no longer ship to prison facilities.
Manzanita 05-24-2005, 05:47 PM thanks for posting that....
trescheek 05-25-2005, 09:14 AM UpNorth Services, JL Marcus, or Bust the Move. I know UpNorth Services and JL Marcus sells tapes and all three of them deal with prison facilities. (My husband sent me the JL Marcus catalog and I just received a catalog from Bust the Move the other day). See this link for NY vendors for the websites/phone numbers: http://www.prisontalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=81477

mondababy 06-02-2005, 12:03 PM My hubby is in Clinton. I get a lot of his tapes from E-bay.
Momma Ann 06-21-2005, 08:54 AM Tapes (something something) 718-643-6985 They have a lot of mix tapes which is what my son was looking for. (and don't ask me what a mix tape is-I the Beatles generation-LOL)
LADYCEE 06-22-2005, 05:13 PM Ok u Beatle Baby;), A mix tape is a tape with different artists on it (a party on tape) like the Beatles, mamas and papas, The Monkeys ect... (and don't ask me what a mix tape is-I the Beatles generation-LOL)
garysfriend 06-25-2005, 06:58 AM So tapes have to come from the vendor only? There's no way I can make some and send them to him?
Manzanita 06-25-2005, 08:48 AM No, in Ny, this is not allowed.
garysfriend 06-28-2005, 05:50 AM Is there a company that will make the tapes at your request. Like a mix tape?
Manzanita 06-28-2005, 07:06 AM You cannot bring mix tapes to a prison, the only tapes allowed are tapes straight from the company and sealed.
Momma Ann 06-28-2005, 08:33 AM the guys at Great Meadow get them from this service if they want mix tapes-they are about 9.50 each.
Manzanita 06-28-2005, 08:12 PM Check with each prison, because some do NOT allow this.
Momma Ann 07-04-2005, 07:40 AM fast service--and they have mix tapes which are allowed at Great Meadow--but check locally.
valorie1 07-04-2005, 08:20 AM Leanne,
You are right. CDs can be broken into and used as a knife or weapon. I also know that many cassettes have to be descrewed before they are sent to prisons. It costs somewhere around $3.00 to $3.50 to have each tape descrewed. You might want to consult the prison before you send any type of tapes. Also some prisons (ie supermaxes) only allow tapes from certain companies. I also know some prisons you can not mail tapes in. Like if you buy it and then mail it in it will be returned. You can not take them in on visits etc. I would definitely call and find out the rules there before I spent any money. I hope this helps. Pack Central will descrew them for a price. Their address is 6745 Denny Avenue North Hollywood CA. 91606. $2.00 for catalog and they are free with a purchase. The one out now is valid till October 31st, 2005. The order line number is (818)760-2828.

angel1104 10-29-2005, 11:14 PM M&P doesn't have a website you have to call them to get a catolog. But they are working on it LOL that what they said a few months ago. There number is 410-893-8542. I also use upnorthservices.com they are great. Only thing is they don't have as big of a selection as m&p does.

jewel-lynne 10-30-2005, 04:00 PM It depends on the artist. most artists now do not even record on cassette. There is no money in it for them. My man is an artist that is the only reason I know this. It seems like now days it is hard for them to make money off CD's too because of the bootleg craze! with being said you best bet is to buy the CD and tape it onto a cassette for him. now i know for sure that you can purchase blank cassettes at Wal-Mart or K-Mart.

Not all facilities allow copied tapes. I know at Lakeview they will only accept tapes by mail from a company. I couldn't even but them at tower records and bring them up. I would call first before you copy a cd and send it.

OfficerFriendly 11-04-2005, 08:49 AM Ok, just so everyone knows, NO CD's are allowed in NYS prisons. NONE of them. The rule is the same for ALL of the prisons statewide.
Cassettes only! Must be FACTORY made/sealed. We confiscate all "home made" or "re-recorded" cassettes from inmates and they are subject to a misbehavior report for possession of contraband.

is anyone else having a problem downloading kingpinent's catalog? or is it just me??
mondababy 11-13-2005, 12:06 AM Hi GrandmaL,
My hubby is at Clinton in Dannemora also. UpNorth Services has cassettes. They are a DOC approved vendor. I have also ordered him cassettes from sonymusic.com, and EBay...all with no problems.
HeSoHandsome 11-13-2005, 07:59 AM Do they even still make these because I sure as hell can't find them anywhere!!!! If someone knows where I might be able to find cassettes from Kanye West and other new releases please let me know.
Sweetie, try TapsNThings, Inc., P.O. Box 050228, Brooklyn, NY 11205, Tel. 718-643-6985, Fax 718-643-6986.
According to their catalog they are not a walk in service but a over the phone order service to inmates. It says: "We only stock and ship music products purchased from major music distributors and record companies. This is enforced by the Department of Correctional Services, and we will uphold to protect the safety and privilege of the inmate." Sounds purdy good huh? :cuffs:
They have a huge selection -- if you don't see what you want on the flyer don't mean they don't have it, so ask them. The have a lot of mix tapes and I believe their cassettes don't have screws because some facilities don't allow that.
I know of another place but can't recall it off hand. I'll ask my husband to give me the information because he got the catalog as I can't find mine. I haven't tried either service yet but once anyone does and you and your loved are satisfied, let Mrs G know so that she can add them to the list of vendors. Also, once I try them, I'll let her know as well. {warning, the font that lists the tracks on the cassette are tiny but the name and basic description are small enough to see.

For everyone who's looking for mixed tapes, I found a Dj who services correctional facilities. His name is DJ6FIGA. He even makes specialty tapes where you can submit the song list and he will make the mix and even give a shout out on the tape (to whoever your sending it to). They cost $10 - $15 including shipping and handling.
Specialty tapes cost a little bit more depending on if you want a specialized cover. You e mail him a photo and he can hook it up for you.
He does Hip Hop, R&B, Reggea, Soca and even Reggeaton. Check his website out. Give it time to load, because on some computers (without DSL) it takes a minute to load up.

HeSoHandsome 11-20-2005, 02:05 PM I know of another place but can't recall it off hand.
The place I was talking about and couldn't recall is the place that NeNa mentioned.
Don't forget guys, when you order MAKE SURE you first find out if cassettes with screws are allowed by the facility, and if not, be sure to check with the place where you order from to find out if their cassettes have screws. TapesNThings said theirs do not have screws, but just be sure to double check.
NeNa I'll try and remember to ask my husband to give me the kingpin information when we speak again.

babygurl919 11-25-2005, 11:20 PM I haven't read through this whole thread, so I apologize if this has already been said, but you CAN NOT buy tapes from eBay (at least according to my boyfriend) because (A) they are usually not brand new and (B) cassettes MUST be sent from an actual company, not a home address. Learned that the hard way.
Manzanita 11-26-2005, 11:24 AM good point babygirl ;) it must be factory sealed from an approved vendor
NaniLoas 12-01-2005, 07:59 AM It seems that maybe, Music by Mail is no longer in business. both of the numbers I have for them are disconnected and no new number's given on the recording. Does anyone know anything about this, or have a new number for them?
I've been trying to reach Pack Central for 2 weeks straight. They have west coast hours, so the phone just rings off the hook anytime before noontime eastern -- there's no voicemail, no answering machine, nothing. After noon, I have only managed to get busy signals...lots of them, all day long...until around 9pm my time when once again, the phone just rings off the hook.
borders, amazon, and best buy are the only three other vendors that are approved for sending tapes into Diamondback (if the info 'my inmate' gave me is accurate, that is,) and NONE OF THEM SELL TAPES! Everything's CD and DVD now -- not that I blame them, as cassette tapes are pretty much a dead technology! Does anyone know why the inmates can't have CDs?
It just seems like it shouldn't be anywhere near this hard to "give the gift of music." Sheesh.

babygurl919 12-26-2005, 11:38 AM Does anyone know the policy on buying tapes at a regular store (not the Internet) and sending them from your home address? My man is under the impression that they have to be sent from a company address, even if they're brand new, sealed, with receipt and everything. He said I should go back to the store I bought them from and ask if they can ship them for me if I pay shipping. Just sounds like a stupid rule, but you know how DOC is. I think I'll call the prison tomorrow and ask but does anyone happen to know?

He is correct, you cannot not send them to him.

I saw your post about slow service from Tapesnthings.
There is a small on-line store called The Music Locator that can work with you to ship cassettes.
