well hello and welcome. I am also fairly new to this but I have been visiting my soon to be husband at old folsom for the last 8 months. They are really backed up in the mailroom. My man has received things I sent out since November. Regarding your visiting app, trying calling up there and talk to the Serg. Explain to him your situation, maybe he can look and see if you've been approved or not. He is really a nice guy and helpful also. Visiting there is hectic. I suggest if you are approved, you get all the info of who's on lockdown before you drive all the way down there. The last couple of months my visits have been terminated due to overcrowding. Hope i've been a little help. If I can answer any other questions, please let me know. Good luck!!

Books don't count as quarterly packages.

This may be the last quarter you can order a quarterly package for an inmate at old folsom. My information was that anything arriving after April 1st would be sent back to the vendor - my understanding was that they're finally going to be transferring most inmates to Mule Creek (after three years of talking about it) - and they don't want the packages coming in. I'll believe it when I see it but if you DO plan on sending a quarterly package you may want to do so within the next week or so... just to be on the safe side - you don't want to get burned - the QP companies are a major pain to get your money back from. And no books don't count - of course they have to be paperback and sent directly from the vendor (I use amazon - it works). I HATE OLD FOLSOM!!!

my boyfriends been @ folsom since last april. He's in the white population and they've been on lockdown on and off for so long i haven't been able to visit once. as far as mail goes they're mailroom is behind about a month and a half. oh and you can't mail them stamps! you have to send "pre-stamped" envelopes, you can buy them at any post office. if you send regular stamps the mail room will keep them. you can send a max amount of 10 envelopes and 25 pieces of paper. also if you're sending money you can't send cash or personal check - it has to be money order. i.e. western union. and no matter how much they owe for restitution the prison can only garnish a certain percentage of that; i think its something like 15%. As far as books go you can't send them personally. you can call the prison or look on the web for books that are allowed - certain stuff is contriband like tattoo magazines, anything related to weapons or gangs (obviously) etc. i havent seen a book list on the quarterly package order sheet but i could have just overlooked it. the way i do it is through book stores. i go through barnes and nobles.. you can call their stores and ask for a list of their stores in your area that deliver to "institutions". at the checkout just let them know all of the information and they will ship it to them. hope this helpes. if you have any more questions i will be happy to try and answer them. just send me an instant message or whatever they're called. good luck

My son has been at Old Folsom since last March. I was told that I could send 2 books at a time from any bookstore. I have used both Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Only paperbacks. It seems to work perfectly. Magazines are ok also. There are free ones available to sign up for every couple of weeks. It's great. If my son doesn't like it, he gives it away.

When my son first got to OF, he wrote me what could be sent to him. It was as follows: 40 stamps, 40 envelopes, 100 shhets of paper, unlimited photos but none larger than 8X10 inches. I have sent books of stamps in, 30 envolpes and about 75 sheets of paper with no problems. Disallowed items are pens, pencils, stickers, no post its, no perfume or lipstick, nothing with white out on it.

Like everyone else has stated, mail is very slow. It is running at least 3 to 4 weeks late. It's seems to be the same for most prisons. They have to open up everything and make sure no contraband is in it.

Call the main number at OF 1-916-985-2561. Extension 4168 or 3031 should get you into visiting. Menu Option for visiting won't get you to a live person. If that doesn't work, call back in and pick the menu option that will get you into records. They should be able to get you to the visiting seargent.

1-916-445-6713 inmate locator (if you know full name and birthday, I think, you can get his CDC#)
1-800-374-8474 visitor hotline - menu options will get you to OF information for visiting and what you can wear.

Hope this helps... If you need more, let me know.:)

You can also use U.S. Postal Money Orders; they're $.95 or so (largest I've ever sent was $60, the fees may be higher for larger dollar amounts).

The CDCR currently takes 44% out of incoming money if restitution / court costs / fines / etc. are owed; that increases to 55% in January. Books must be paperback and shipped from the vendor or publisher directly; I've successfully sent in books from Barnes and Noble.com and Amazon.com to other CA facilities, but not to Folsom.

my boyfriend just transferred to old Folsom 3 weeks ago. Does anyone know what the mail wait is looking like or the visitation for the southsiders (Southern Hispanic Pop)? I've never been to this one before.
Thanks:rolleyes:
