Hello you two. The "uniforms" usually represent the security level they are. I work at the County level so I am not familiar with State colors. Hope this has helped.

ok. let me ask you. In County jail (LA), I've seen blue uniform. What does that mean? Also I've seen in front of Twin Towers people walking on the street with what looks like a white uniform (it looks like an inmate uniform but white colored). This is a dumb question but bare with me. Are they employees of the jail house? I've been wondering for years.

ooo, not sure about LA County. I have visited the towers but I am not sure about the colors. If the ones in white are inmates, they are probablly on some sort of work release program (work for the County and go home at night instead of doing cell time). That is just a guess, sorry I couldn't help more.

All I know is that ugly light green are for the Inmate Trustees and the orange scrubs are for the high Security Inmates.

Well I'm in the Pomona Area and when inmates wear the white uniforms, that means that they were just realeased from court.

What about green?

I know about Elmwood, green is at the medium level security, orange, is the farm thats what they call it, and that is minimum, brown is protective custody, and yellow is for the housing unit that the mentally ill are at, and red is maximum, they are housing in individual cells, there is also double red. The women over at Elmwood wear white shirts with green pants, if in Minimum units, orange shirts with green pants in Mediam units, and you have your red again for maximum, again housed in individual cells.

Yes, all the medium security inmates at Elmwood wear green pants, however if he has a brown shirt on then that means he's in PC (protective custody). He can be in PC for several reasons and here's some examples: (He may have a sex offense on his jacket or is going to court for a sex offense. He may be a gang drop out. He may be a snitch. He may be tesifying against someone and for his safety he may have to be placed in protective custody. He may be an ex officer or high profile inmate. In Santa Clara county 90% of the hispanic population are Northerners so if he's a southern hispanic then he has to be in PC while in our county...for his safety). That's just a few of the reasons why he'd be in brown.

At Centinela state I am aware of: lime green, guys who work outside on the grounds. Bright orange, work on fire detail and blue shirts and blue pants are gen pop minimum .

In Eldorado County (Lake Tahoe & Placerville) Jails the uniform colors are as follows....

YELLOW- Civil cases

ORANGE- Convicted cases.

RED- Maximum Security/High Risk

White- Inmate Workers.

Guards are in Black uniforms from Ranks of Officer to Sgt. Lieutenants and above are in Olive. Inmate Services Officers are plain clothed. Doctors/Psychiatrists/Psychologists/Religious officials/Barbers are in Civilian clothes with a photo identification badge.

The officers who escort inmates from the Lake Tahoe Jail (Lower Level) to the Courts (Upper Level) are El Dorado County Sheriff Deputies in their Olive uniforms.

I also have information on Douglas County Nevada if anybody is interested.

The colors of the inmates uniforms(county) represent the unit that their in. ie: PC (Protective Custody) AdSeg (Administrative Segregation) Mental Health and General Population. If it a county jail where males and females are housed, then the females have their own uniforms colors different from the males. The same for State, the colors represent where that inmate is housed within the prison.

Not always true. GP and PC both wear either orange if they are reception or blue if they are mainline.

At Elmwood, light green is for lock down facility(gang related issues and all)
Dark green is pretty much also lock down facility, basically offenders n all they all stay at M4. M8 block wears stripes which is i think the camp. Theres more but thats all I know.
My loved one is in M4, sadly he is the light green, caught with friends(gang related). sucks. :(
