View Full Version : Prison Weddings Forum
CARLAxoxoxTODD 05-30-2002, 11:52 PM Welcome to the Prison Weddings Forum
This forum will cover all topics regarding Prison Weddings, from engagement, announcements, planning & the big day.
You will find information regarding Prison Weddings at specific county, state & federal facilities. When posting about a specific facility, please include the facility name in the subject. This will ease in any searches done by other PTO members.
If you have a new post about a facility that is already listed, please include it in the existing post. This will make it easier to locate information in one post rather than multiple.
Please post any ideas, tips or other information to help each other prepare for the big day. Of course, we want to see the wedding photos! :)
You are also welcome to release those last minute jitters. We are all here for each other...in sickness & in health, in good times & in bad.

Sunni V 04-23-2003, 09:05 AM I go married by proxy to my husband. He got the papers signed & noterized his part. I took it to the court house & had it filed. We were married 3 days later in my granny's house with my mom standing in for him. He wasn't present but we took pictures. When he gets out we're going to have a real wedding.
bbonnie 04-25-2003, 03:14 AM Calif. appears fairly easy to get approved to marry. Has anyone had experience in Calipatria ? The visiting room is one of he most liberal I've ever been in. Are you allowed conjugal visits if you marry in prison. Does anyone know the policy on this? I'd appreciate any answers or where I can look to find them,

shawnswife 08-04-2003, 09:59 PM I had no problems getting approved in Iowa. First my husband talked to his counselor, so Shorty20 start there. We had to each fill out a marriage license and haveit notorized (counselor was notary) send it in, wait three days and then it was on.
In all they had us approved within 2 weeks. We also had to have premarital counseling with the chaplain.
Ramiahswife 08-06-2003, 10:42 PM Hi my fiance and I are in the process of getting married, here in WI , his PO has to approve, the chaplin has to approve we have to do 6 months of counceling and we have to get a minster to marry us. Marriage license and rings are also are responsibility. So far we have done all of the above, we got approval from his PO within 3 weeks, we are currently waiting on the chaplin to approve so we can start our counceling. He is really being extremely slow in the process, its been over 6 months since we request the marriage approval. I wonder whats the hold up?
E1950 08-10-2003, 11:35 AM my husband & i was married in st. claire prison in alabama. we got married aug. 4th,1995. we had no problems with the chaplain there. we had to go through 6 counciling sessions about being married in the system and making marriage work under these circumstances. we have just celebrated our 8th anniversary and we are still apart. our relationship has grown closer, we are best friends. i was able to take a cake in and some drinks as well as a camera. we were able to visit for 3 hours afterward.we had a ceramony as beautiful as one in a church. we couldn't set the date but really it didn't matter when. sue

Crying Eyes 08-13-2003, 01:21 AM me and my fiance want to get married while he is in prison. What do I have to do for us to get married? He is in Abilene Texas, in the Middleton Unit.
Care9 08-16-2003, 09:27 PM We got married at Easterling C.F. in So. Alabama (15 months ago) and had nothing but trouble with the Chaplain there as well as the Ass.Chap. who did the 'counselling' ~~ If I didn't have a sense of humor and gut determination, I don't think we would be married today if it were up to them. They even went so far as to refuse to marry us because we were not 'religious enough' for them. Told us we could do it BUT had to find our own minister. Not easy to do when I live in Northern Wisconsin and know NOBODY down there except my then-boyfriend. Well, this was also the time that the Warden took our phone privileges away due to us using Telenet.........so I had lots of obstacles to overcome but I was NOT going to give up! I planned and carried off the entire thing without the use of a telephone conversation with James. Even the day before the wedding was to take place they tried to pull some stuff but finally the Probate Judge told me that if we got there (I DID find a minister to do it!!) and they gave us any more trouble, that that I should just call her and she'd be right over to do the wedding her own self!! When I told her which prison it was that I was having troubles with, she said "Well, now that makes more sense. It's a miracle that warden is letting you get married at all." Don't know the story on that one, but just to say that it was a testimony of human endurance ~~ and the Creator's hand in the whole thing. It was a great ceremony and we were allowed to bring in a camera, cake, soda and plastic cups. I brought in plastic champain glasses; it was way cool. And we were allowed one hour to visit afterwards with just our minister and our best man. And officers coming and going in and out of the room of course. But it was very nice.
When I got back home and put the picture and notice in the local newspaper, I worded it as follows: "........The groom has a secure position with the State of Alabama at this time but plans to join his wife and children in {my town} as soon as possible." LOL People that knew, thought it was hysterical. People that didn't would ask me "What does your new husband DO in Alabama?" And I would say: Anything they tell him to. :-)
Anyhow, I wouldn't trade my wedding to him for anything even though it was in prison. Someday we can always renew our vows and besides, we got that honeymoon to look forward to!!
~~Care
lisac117 08-20-2003, 08:40 AM Care,
What a NICE story!!!!! I LOVE your newspaper notice too. How smart of you "has a secure position w/the State of Alabama". LOL. Ahhh, that is too cute!
God bless ya both,
Lisa
lisac117 08-20-2003, 08:45 AM Ok, here's my story.....me & my honey are in NY. We want to get married. The OLD HAG town clerk they have told me straight up "NO I'm NOT coming to the facility to do any license for you or anybody else and that's that". Well.....good thing I don't take "no" too easily :). Anyway....I spoke to the chaplain at the jail who told me some very good information. That it is in the DOCS Directive that they can NOT deny an inmate from marriage. And that just because the town clerk won't do it, we should still go ahead and write our letters and what not and that if the Super (who's new by the way) approves it, HE can put the pressure on GUIDANCE to get the license done :). But...there is a small obstacle in my way, which is my honey is waiting for his damn birth certificate. (sigh) But...I found a WONDERFUL WONDERFUL WONDERFUL Reverend who is about 40 miles from the facility who is helping me and who is going to perform the ceremony!!!!!!!! YAY!!!!!!! This person is DA BOMB!!!!!!! I'm just SO GRATEFUL to the Reverend. SUCH A NICE PERSON, TOUGH, DOESN'T PLAY AROUND, DOESN'T TAKE "NO" TOO EASILY EITHER....the best. Enough of my babbling. Take care everyone and I will keep yall posted. Lisa

my-oreuh 09-06-2003, 08:48 AM Although I don't have all the answers-I too am looking into getting married, by boyfirend is in DVI right now...for 8 days to be exact, then will transfer to another prison. so i'm wondering where the heck he'll end up! How long is your hunny in for? Mine is in for 16mos, but does he serve 1/2 time> ? Does anyone know?? I still haven't heard from him, not a call nor a letter :fb:
mommie chula 09-13-2003, 09:32 AM to kris in nc--i will be getting married in sc system and their stand is they will not "assist or deter" a marriage. The first roadblock was at the courthouse-they said both people have to be present to pick up the form-RIDICULOUS!-so i called the judge and asked what about people who are bed-ridden etc. so she said they could send me the application, have it signed and notarized, then bring it to my fiance for him to sign and have notarized..then they gave him a hard time about notarizing the form but they finally did..then you have to find a judge or minister, justice of the peace, or in sc a notary public can marry you as long as they gat on the visitation list..so that's where we are! Good luck hope that helped..mc
OK, me too on the long list of "how to get married in prison" hahaha. I'm in Washington state and have no idea how friendly they are to the idea of inmate marriages. Any one out there in WA been there before?? I would greatly appreciate any info you have. Should I check with a lawyer first and if so what kind? would like to know the laws before I have to run the gauntlet because I have found if YOU don't know the rules they will be glad to make them up as they see fit as they go along.
Thanks for any info, Skye
