View Full Version : Have You Heard Of Spreads?
momuvjosh 02-04-2006, 07:35 PM Every time I send my son his quarterly I send the maximum of 30 lbs but he uses it up so quick. Not the hygiene stuff but the food. He said everyone pitches in and they make soups and stuff and they call it a spread. 30 lbs is not very much when you want it to last the whole quarter is it? Especially when there are shoes or sweatshirts in the package. He also said the water in the dorm is very HOT! Hot enough to cook pasta. He said he hopes the food and the amount of food is better at camp.

BlessedLady35 02-04-2006, 08:42 PM yes. My husband does the same thing. The package does not go very far. I send he money also and he buys the ramen etc from the canteen. My husband worked in the kitchen and he said the food was not fit for a dog. He has actually lost an extreme amount of weight....poor thing I don't know how he had the energy to pass the PFT and FFT:rolleyes: Anyway I have talked to people and read that the food is much better at camp. i heard they eat the same food as the employees. the employees are CO's and CCF personnel also. I guess they want them to have the proper nurishiment so they can fight fires:rolleyes:
cysreese 02-05-2006, 02:04 AM Laura,
Yes, a spread is where the guys take ramen noodles soup and add all types of different other foods together and eat it. That is the spread. It could be like noodles, sausage, and some other stuff. It is good to them. My husband actually made a spread for me one time and it was pretty good. It depends on how much food you sent and how well he manages his food, it could be enough. If he doesn't go and eat in the kitchen often and eats the food you send him all the time then you are right hon it will not be enough. Hope that helps a little.
denverswife 02-06-2006, 07:23 PM He shouldn't be needing shoes and clothes very often, so that should help some. Make sure he's keeping the hygiene to what he actually uses, Denver had several extra everythings and it just takes up weight.
JMWifey 02-09-2006, 11:46 AM Thats the first time I heard of spread!! :o
e_wife03 02-09-2006, 11:49 AM Yea . they do that all over i think.. and like cyreese .. i have actually tasted a spread before and it tastes good.. lol
cecelia70 02-09-2006, 11:57 AM Yes, my son said they have a spread often where each one that has contributes. My son's package doesn't last long as he shares with those that do not have. I am glad that he does this as he says there are those that have no one to rely on to send them letters or packages. We are so blessed that we can share. I only wish that we were allowed to send more. He says he eats the food that the prison serves and it is enough for him. He doesn't want to put on weight. LOL I send both packages and money. He said that he does not need anymore clothes now. He is still awaiting his physical so he can get on to camp. Then, he would like another pair of shoes. These will be worn out from all that working out.lol
PRIME EVIL 02-09-2006, 12:05 PM I have heard that some make a mean Sweet and Sour pork with a soup, cool-aid, pork rinds and pineapple.
momuvjosh 02-10-2006, 08:34 AM Sandy, I wonder if they will provide boots for camp. I cant imagine they wear their regular shoes. My son called a week ago and I think I told you before he is just waiting for fft because he is done with pft's. And you are right, there are inmates who have no one and nothing.
Can you just imagine these guys, putting together a meal? Im trying to picture my son with some weight on. He got thin at times by living on the street. Gain at home then off again he would go.
momuvjosh 02-10-2006, 08:36 AM Prime Evil, I wonder what they use for the sweet-sour sauce? My son says they put the shredded beef or the beef tips in the soup. This last package I sent more of the meat. They even had packages of chicken.

cecelia70 02-10-2006, 06:06 PM Hi Laura,
I'm glad that Louise answered your question as I did not know. I am glad that your son is coming along so well and ready for fft. My son is still waiting for his physical. He thinks it will come soon. He has slimmed down from all the self imposed work outs and wants to stay down. He had put on weight as he was home with me for 6 mos while waiting for his sentencing.LOL He ask for prayers that he passes the physical and pft's. Take care and God bless.

momuvjosh 02-11-2006, 09:21 AM Thank you so much Sandy and Louise. I couldnt imagine them cutting fire line in Nike's. lol. Sandy your son is in my prayers as well. Some prayers must be getting heard because so far things have been moving along. Slow but moving. Im just so thankful that my son isnt way down south or something in a prison with lockdowns all the time. He hasnt got put in the hole for fighting. Things to be thankful for. I guess Im learning to look on the bright side as dim as it may be. Louise thanks so much for always having the answers for me. Even when I was completely new at this you helped me out.

All I've been able to think of since I read about "spreads" is this story... [url]http://www.storybin.com/sponsor/sponsor116.shtml (http://www.storybin.com/sponsor/sponsor116.shtml)
So was the soup made from stones and everyone pretended it was food because they were all hungry?

LeBeau 02-11-2006, 01:44 PM Did you read the whole story? It is about cooperation and the way that a thing can become more than the sum of its parts....everyone had a little something that, by itself, was not much but when combined with what the others had, became a genuine feast.
Lillybee 02-11-2006, 08:45 PM My son talks about making a "brick", sounds like the same as spreads.
JamiesFeatherwood 02-11-2006, 09:55 PM my son said they make burritos. raemen noodles water and doritos. <shivers>

cecelia70 02-11-2006, 10:26 PM Thank you all for your prayers. I will tell him when he calls that my PTO friends are praying for him and he will be so uplifted. I am so blessed to know you in our writings.
