Something has been up for the last 2 days. LA county jail has moved a large amount of inmates to Twin Towers. They are packing them in like sardines. The word at Twin Towers is something happened at CJ but no one knows what.

Yes - I was visiting a friend at Twin Towers today and we had just got up to the visiting floor (around 3:50PM). We had two minutes with our inmate and the deputies came up and said the entire facility was going on immediate lockdown and we all had to leave. They didn't even seem to know what happened at that point - said they had just received orders to get everyone out and lockdown. One lady said that she had come to visit there this morning and that they couldn't because they moved something like 300 inmates from CJ over to Twin Towers because of a flood!! Guess not......

They cleared out 2 pods on the 5th floor at Twin Towers yesterday and moved inmates from CJ and more today.I think they could have controlled a "flood" in one day. They are still on lockdown at TT cuz my son hasn't called back.
my daughter was there for the first visit this am and was told they were going to have visiting at 8 and 9 and then tt was going on lockdown and no more visits for the day. then they said no 8am visit, but they were going to have visiting the rest of the day with no break in the middle. Seems like staff don't know whats up either.

Castaic riot leaves one dead; entire LA system in lockdown

Saturday, February 4, 2006

(02-04) 21:02 PST CASTAIC, Calif. (AP) --

The Los Angeles County jail system is locked down this hour after a race riot in Castaic killed one inmate and injured more than 100.

Sheriff Lee Baca says brawling between black and Hispanic prisoners at the North County Correctional Facility this afternoon was broken up with tear gas and stingball grenades.

No guards were hurt but before the rioting ended a 45-year-old black inmate was dead.

Race Riots In California Prison/One Dead, 100 Injured
AP

A riot at a maximum-security jail Saturday left one inmate dead and more than 100 injured, including 20 hospitalized with serious injuries, authorities said.

About 1,800 to 2,000 inmates were involved in the riot that lasted nearly an hour at the remote North County Correctional Facility, said Deputy Steve Suzuki, a sheriff's spokesman. About 200 inmates engaged in ``serious fighting,'' but it appeared that no weapons were used, he said.

By the way......several of us asked more than one deputy if this visit was going to count against their "two visits per week" rule for the inmates. We were assured that this visit will NOT count - it will be CANCELED. So as of now.....we should all still have two more visits for the visiting week. (That's for Twin Towers.....Men's Central Jail's visiting week ends tomorrow).

Thanks..........If you check the computer www.lasd.org (http://www.lasd.org) for your son's name, if they took him to a hospital it will be posted there. Thats how I found out my son was taken to the hospital a few months ago. They won't call you. Good luck, my prayers are with you and your son.

This is horrible. But there is a positive that made me say halleluia (sp) -- there appeared to be no weapons. I can't believe they were allowed to fight for an hour -- that's a LONG time when you're fighting. I'm really sorry that one person lost they life because he was somebody's relative. I'm also glad there were no other fatalities because that one was too many.

But wow, I really do hate this fighting that goes on between the gangs out there in Cali.

it doesn't matter what day you go back, they will either believe you or check the slips. The same deputies usually work anyway. i have been going to visit there for a year now, and the deputies at twin towers are very respectful. The ones at CJ should take lessons from them.

Ok, thanks for the info......and you are right - they deputies are very nice there at Twin Towers (I've only been to the men's tower, though - never to the women's tower). I've only been to visit someone once at Men's Central - and you are right - the deputies there could use some education from across the street.....it's so chaotic there, too......

I to am glad that more did not lose their life.

I heard on the channel 11 news that it was a racial thing, between hispanics and blacks. They also said there was some violence at CJ 2 days ago. Baca said he was segragating the inmates. He said the deputies recieved a note from the hispanics that said they don't want to be housed with the blacks and that they threatened the deputies. He said they knew something was going to happen, they just didn't know when.

AND DIDN'T do maybe an "EMERGENCY" SEG..OR SOMETHING????......I can't believe there is not a "provision" to stop this before it starts a "bloodbath in this state." There is a note by inmates warning that segregation was needed to avoid a riot. They didn't do it.

It is sad that under the shield of a ethnic riot an RSO was killed.

It went to a gang fight when more than two people started fighting because I'm thinking some gangs took advantage of the opportunity to fight. Also when the paper call it a race fight, that was it for me because they don't really fight for race, but for gang, right. I mean the gangs are different races, but I don't think it's more racism but more gang but it appears more racist because many of the gangs are separated by race.

I'm really touched by this fighting, but because the folks out there seem to basically be concerned with their visit, maybe that's because the fighting is a common thing and they're used to it? I don't know.

I guess I expected them to fire some gas bullets or something that would disburse the crowd. But I do know it's bad out there.

The strange thing is my son is no longer at Wayside but was at this exact spot in the past. He says it is so crouded. I don't even know if they get to go outside and that is a difficult problem. We can only imagine what that must be like. My son has been at two other facilities and since August 2005 he has been in lockdown. They don't go outside of the cell except for a shower a couple times a week. Then everything that is delayed or not going correctly they staff says "because we are on lockdown" This is very hard on our loved ones and probable can expect some problems when they finally get to be out. Locked in a cell for that many months. Something needs fixed and not just blame it on a racial problem, there are lots of other problems in the California System why not try some real programs that help the inmates. Not just lock them up in a overcrowded system and expect everything to be ok.

I don't know if it was a gang thing or due to race, because I wasn't there. All I know is what I hear on the news and read in the papers. But for your information not every inmate in the Los Angeles County Jail System is a gang member or racist. Yes those of us with a loved one in the system are concerned with our visits. that is the only way we will know that our loved one is safe. It's not like we could just pick up a phone and call the nice CO at the jail and ask how our loved one is and if he's safe. Even when they do get to make calls home they won't be able to discuss what really happened on the phone or they will get disconnected. So until we see and talk to our loved in person we sit at home and worry. I do believe that one of the reasons for this site is to help us at home be a little more informed about our loved ones.

The fighting isn't just about gangs it is also very much about race. The officials on the news acted all surprised about a "race riot" I dont see how they could it's been like that forever in the state prisons. They said that state law prevents them from segragating inmates by race, but they would do it now because of the emergancy situation. Thats funny because I have herd plenty of times in the past of them being segragated by their own choice and by the choice of the officials.

Me neither but when more than a one on one is going on . . . , it's something. Of course every inmate out there isn't in a gang, IMO, that goes without saying, but if you feel that's "information", okaaaaaay. I just basically wanted to say I'm sorry about the violence that happens out there in California because I do know there's a lot of gangs out there. If you're taking my posts any way other than that, then that's too bad as well.

I thought they were on lockdown too but I guess where theres a will theres a way. It might not have been in the Max North facility they have other lower security areas maybe it happend there. Obviously they havent done a great job at seperating them. Sherrif Lee Baca didn't show up at a hearing that was held today to discuss the situation. He didn't want to comment. They said there considering implementing a new computerized system in the future to help identify things like gang offiliation, etc. So if they do segragate inmates they dont put inmates from the same race and different gangs together.

There were 2 more fights today at Pitchess Detention Facility (the Honor Ranch) in the first fight around noon 7 Hispanic inmates and 12 African American inmates were injured, 1 seriously with head injuries. At around 8:30pm there was another fight (the second of the day) in which 5 inmates were injured (they didnt say which race). The Honor Ranch is now on lock down.
They said on the news that the Honor Ranch was not on lock down or segragated, because it is a lower security part of the facility, but will now be put on lock down because of the incidents that took place today.
They (channel 5 news) also interviewed an African American man by phone who is incarcerated at Pitchess Detention Facility. He said that the inmates are now segregated where he is with the African American inmates on the second floor and the Hispanic inmates on the first floor. He also said that they (the African American inmates, i dont know about the Hispanic Inmates) were being treated inhumanly. They were not given sheets, blankets, or clothing. They were being keept together naked. The officials replyed to the news station that they would look into this and that there goal is to treat all inmates humanely.
