View Full Version : Question About Library's In Prisions...
CURIOUS411 01-29-2006, 07:51 AM do any of the nysdoc facilities have libraries with computers in them?
for instance if an imate is taking a course and wants to learn, and gain credit for doing time do certain inmates get to use computer just for that purpose,or is the library just walls of books and nothing else.
OfficerFriendly 01-29-2006, 08:13 AM No computers for use like that in the library.

CURIOUS411 01-29-2006, 09:01 AM Hmm,ok,i Have Another Question...why Would'nt Prisions Have Computer In Them.i Mean Nys Has Such High Taxes That We Pay,and The State Has Money,i Beleive We Have Some Extra Money Layin Around, that Goes To The Wrong Places, and Unnessasary Programs That People Just Really Take Advantage Of And Using It For The Wrong Reasons ,i Beleive In Rehabing Inmates And Getting Them Educated, like Get Them To Learn How To Read, drug Rehabing, getting Ready To Get Back In The Real World And Learning How To Stay In The Real World...,so When It Comes Time Of Them Getting Out They Have Some Knowlage, and Some Kinda Drive To Want To Get Out And Work And Be Knowlagable And Productive.
I Also Would Like To Say That There's Got To Be Someone Or Something To Get This To Work. I Would Imagine That Some Techy Computer Savy Person,oe Computer Companies Would Love To Get InvoLved And Would Love To Come Around And Do Service On The Puters And Have Blocks On Certain Websites, like For Example Porn And Crap Like That.... But Have The Internet Open To Be Used For Only The "good Boys And "good Girls Who Are Doing Well, I Surley Wouldn't Want A Trouble Maker With In The Walls To Have Access To A Computer... It's A Matter Of Privlages And Reasons, Like If They Were Doing Studies ,or In A Program.
I Really Truly Think That Some Inmates Would Benifit. And They Really Have To Show Themselves To Be Part Of That Computer Program.I THINK IT A GOOD THING.
*CREATE A SYSTEM AND SCHEDUAL FOR THOS WHO DESERVE IT.
*HAVE THE COMPUTER(S) IN A FIXED POSTIONS TO AVOID DAMAGE AND OR THEFT.WHICH I THINK SHOULD'NT HAPPEN IF THERES A C/O IN THE ROOM AND CAMERAS IN THE ROOM TO MONITOR EVERYONE WHO'S IN THERE.
Manzanita 01-29-2006, 09:18 AM Where my husband is there are computors but only for the use of teaching certain programs and if he is enrolled in that Program. Tell him to ask his counselor if he wants to take some classes, but I am not sure all prisons have them.
Again, you have to keep this in mind...They are in prison and are being punished. Certain rights are not given to them because of that.
Manzanita 01-29-2006, 09:20 AM I suggest you read the Forum...
What you need to know to help you figure out a lot of your questions.

ok i undersatand that they are being punished for their actions, but come on...it's 2006,people need to learn,be productive, and get out smart...being punished shouldnt hold them back their rights wanting to learn, they are still behind thos walls and being out of socitiy's eyes for the durration that he or she is in for,why would'nt the prisions want to make it at least comfortable and really making it a learning experiance and still feel like a person who can do things..besides sitting in their cell wackin off to porn magazines,or people who are bord as hell and picking fights with one another...thats not being productive...forgive me for for sounding angry,im not yellin at you..but im expressing my thoughts.i think that if things change,we on the outside as being the inmates loved one waiting for them, wouldnt you want to know what he/she is doing and actually doing something with them selves.
as im learning about the prisions and how things are..i really think that things should change, change for the better, not to make it worse...prision does change people in worst ways,reason..they are depressed, feel like theres nothing in life, and fustrated:rolleyes: ..im just thinkin how we as ny'rs who pay such high taxes, which is rediculous, and break'in our asses to help our loved one in or just going in, to make prision not such a bad place.
Manzanita 01-29-2006, 10:00 AM Although we might all agree with you and this idealistic point of view, there is the harsh reality we face every day. I suggest that he read as much as possible on his own, and take all programs available to him and if you can afford it, have him take college courses if he has a HS diploma or GED.
Take it one day at a time.

Oh Snap...
stormierainn 01-29-2006, 11:06 AM computers yes internet NO! they can do legal work on the computer. where my husband is at they have word perfect
Curious I agree that there should be something educational and positive put into place for our loved ones. However when the State won't help you sometimes you have to take it into your own hands. When I was looking for college programs for my fiance a lot of them were good but of no use to him without access to a computer. But I didn't give up there and I found an accredited school with a distance program that you can do completely by mail . So far my fiance is doing great and I think he will have his Associate's before 2008 gets here. Maybe you want to check it out www.ashworthcollege.com (http://www.ashworthcollege.com)
NYYankee 01-29-2006, 07:40 PM There was a time, not to long ago, when the prisons were about rehabilitation, you could learn a trade, go to college. With the current political climate, the focus now is only on punishment. You know. tough on crime, lock em up and throw away the key all of those sound bites that Americans love to hear...until it's their family member or them that is getting tossed. I know because I was the same way until it happened to my loved one.
Reading you post made me realise how weary I have become with it all. I used to be all up in arms like you are, then the day comes when you realise that they have your loved one in there and you will do what you are told, you will not make waves...or else.
I hope it gets easier for you. I know your pain and frustration. Be careful.

Momma Ann 01-30-2006, 09:19 AM also lists lots of schools that do degrees by mail courses. I am not sure that is the exact name and am not at home to check-but search that on Amazon, you will find it.

It's Ohio University not Ohio State University. They are different and both are state schools. OU is smaller and the first university in Ohio with main branch in Athens, OH. Ohio State (OSU) is very large, considered one of the largest universities and is in Columbus, OH.
Manzanita 01-30-2006, 06:41 PM That is what I meant to say, Ohio University

OfficerFriendly 01-30-2006, 07:34 PM I was surprised to hear that one facility uses computers in the law library. I was under the impression that the only place where we have computers where the inmates have access to them is in the classroom!
Manzanita 01-30-2006, 07:36 PM Wait, who uses computors in the Library?
OfficerFriendly 01-31-2006, 04:10 PM Stormie says they do in the law library at the place her husband is located. Surprised me too Mrs G!

Danee Boy 02-02-2006, 12:49 PM A couple of prisons have computers in the law library. Stictly for typing documents. Most of them have word processor, or typewriter setups.
OfficerFriendly 02-02-2006, 09:52 PM Danee Boy - which prisons have the computers in the law library, if you don't mind sharing?
Danee Boy 02-03-2006, 06:14 PM I'm pretty sure Cayuga does. I was never in there but I've heard guys say they were using computers.
Downstate is type writers only. I've heard second hand that Washinton, Greene, Bare Hill and Wyhoming (sp?) do.
