Hi guys! I've got a quesion that you all can probably answer.

How do they decide which facility a person is going to? Tony started out in county (45 minutes from home), then they moved him to a state facility (9 hours away) and then they moved him again (4 and a half hour drive). Is there any way he can get moved closer to home? How do they decide? There are three medium security male facilities with in an hour drive of our home town...so why'd they send him half way across the state?

Thanks,
Nicky

Is he a state or fed inmate?

I could only suggest that it was the recommendation of the judge that he be placed where he's at. Maybe due to population. Have you asked Tony why he's being moved?

I'm sure some1 else will have a better explanation.

Nicky, I don't know about in New York, but here in FLA I was told they TRY to keep prisoners as close to home as possible. They may not have room at a prison closer to you than he is now. You could try calling the prison and speaking with the classification officer.

Nicky...

It could be that the prisons that are closer to home were full up at the time Tony was to be transferred. I know in IL it has been said that they try to put the guys closer to us...but that's a big ole LIE!!! My fiancee is like 5 hours away from me.

I am not sure about NY, but he might be able to put in for a transfer to a place closer to home. He may need a good reason for the transfer though. If possible ask him to talk to his counselor or see if you or he can get any kind of info. on transfers & what is needed in order to be transferred closer.

Hope I helped you out a bit...

Someone here told me to check with a transfer coordinator. I've heard the same from my friend in a state facility & he also said that he will be writing a state rep. His family may try the same. He knew of someone inside w/ him that had some luck w/ doing a combination of those things. Let us know what you find out! I also don't think they like to put anyone together w/ another that may have been involved in the same case, if that applies.

In North Carolina they can place you any where they wish, but you can ask for a transfer. The way it works in NC is the inmate puts in for a transfer request. It helps if you have a good reason for example:

1. Someone in family who comes to visit cannot ride that far to visit due to their illness.

This has worked for us in the past. Tell him to check with his case worker or programmer which ever he has and he should be able to get help.

In NC if you have any recent writ ups they penalize you for that and you have to wait longer to get transferred.

is it true that state inmates are never moved outside that state?

soraya...sometimes, they are. if they need to be moved for their own protection or are a witness in a case. not often, though.
