Ellsworth warden coming to EDCF

A new warden has been named for the El Dorado Correctional Facility.

Late Monday afternoon Kansas Secretary of Corrections Roger Werholtz announced the appointment of Raymond N. Roberts, currently the warden at the Ellsworth Correctional Facility, as EDCF's new warden.

He will officially take on his new job July 6, and will succeed Charles Simmons, who is leaving to become state deputy secretary of corrections for facilities management.

Simmons, who previously served a little more than eight years as state secretary of corrections, has served as EDCF warden since Sept. 30 of last year.

He succeeded Mike Nelson, the prison's first warden, who had retired in August.

Simmons will continue to serve as EDCF warden until July 6.

"I am very pleased we have a warden with Ray Roberts' experience and proven ability in corrections to fill the position at El Dorado," remarked Werholtz.

"Ray has served with distinction at the correctional facilities at Lansing and Ellsworth, and as a deputy secretary of corrections here in the department's central office."

When the EDCF warden's job came open, Werholtz said, "I was hopeful we would be able to fill the warden's position quickly.

"Ray was selected from a field of highly qualified corrections professionals, and I am confident he will continue his excellent service with the Department of Corrections and the state of Kansas."

Roberts began his career at the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman as a corrections officer in July of 1975.

In March of 1988 he became deputy warden at Kansas' Lansing Correctional Facility, and was promoted to warden in July of 1989.

In September of 1991 he was appointed deputy secretary for facilities management.

In May of 1995 Roberts returned to Mississippi to accept a position as deputy commissioner of corrections, a position which is comparable to a deputy corrections secretary in Kansas.

He had also worked in the correctional system in Texas prior to returning to Kansas in September of 1997 to become deputy warden at the Ellsworth Correctional Facility.

He has served as that facility's warden since Jan. 27, 1999.

The KDOC is hoping to fill the warden's position at Ellsworth by early August of this year. Louis Bruce, Hutchinson Correctional Facility warden, will serve as Ellsworth's acting warden, in addition to his current duties, until the position at Ellsworth is filled.
