I would be asking the teacher questions.BUT.. I know of a first grader boy that brought a gun to school and he was kicked out of school permanently . Schools dont play these days.

About the race issue. I think they dont mean a thing about it. They classify everything these days. It was not necessary but Schools are getting as bad as DOC in some ways. They do things because they can.

Yes i notice that i just figured that was on a standard form provided by the school .. i seen a few schools like that .. as far as him gettting detention in gym only they can provide you with why he got it and why their methods are the way they are.. Do you feel bothered cause they have that on thier about their gender and ethinicity?

I noticed that as well because I work at as a student teacher part time, it is not necessary to fill out the child's race on a detention slip obviously the parent and teacher what ethnicity the child is...that is just plain old ridicolous

I think the form looks a little harsh to me. Date of offense? It is like looking up someone up in the prison system and you see date of offense. I don't feel like the race should even be presented on there. It just doesn't look right for a child in kindergarten. Now I do believe in discipline but not the form.

yeah what ever happened to time out? i threw one of those box bricks at a kids head and i got to sit in the time out chair like detention is going to work with a 5-6 year old. are they going to have them trace the abc's or play connect the dots, or color like thats going to hurt them

OH MY GOD! I'm a kindergarten teacher in Australia and I cannot believe what I am seeing!
What the hell does it matter what race the kid is? And why on earth would you be giving a detention slip? Even using time out is a bit on the harsh side sometimes in my opinion.
That is so totally screwed up that I can't get my jaw up off the floor. If that's the way the children in your country are being treated, then you are just adding to the social and racial issues that already exist there.
I was always under the impression that the USA was far more civilised and evolved than this, but after visiting my fiance there this year, I see that nothing can be further from the truth.
I can't believe that any early education facility would use this kind of system and if they are, then you should seriously be getting together a group of parents and fighting the school board on this kind of disciplinary action.
No wonder you're concerned. I would be positively livid!

Children should not be identified by their race on school documents like this, especially a detention slip. Why don't they ask what religion he is too while they're at it? Or take down his weight and height if it's only an identifier. If it were my child, I would call and talk to the principal and ask him or her why the race of the child is identified. Maybe there is a logical reason for it that I don't see, or maybe they have just been doing things a certain way for a long time now and need someone to speak out.

Did this look like their normal detention slip? I would go to the principal, and without mentioning anything about the slip that you got, tell the principal that you want to see their detention slips. See if these forms are given to all students regarding detention. Next...what on EARTH was the adult thinking that gave a boy in kindergarten detention? My son's in the first grade, and I would be pissed, to say the least! A detention for failure to follow direction?? I wonder what punishment they hand out for hitting another student or talking back to the teacher...the firing squad? Seriously though....if this were my son, I would be crawling up the principal's A** first thing Monday morning!

I REALLY hope you get some answers on this....let us know how this turns out.

I think some teachers these days are going way overboard. My neice was written up for running her hand along the wall while they were walking to lunch. That's ridiculous. Since when do they write up kindergarteners?!

Better do fingerprints too, this could be serious!

You know what's crazy? At the beginning of the school year, my son's brother Kyle transferred from another school, and they ended up in the same classroom together. I went in to talk to the teacher one day, and informed her that she needs to keep an eye on my son and his brother because they like to goof off a lot and I didn't want that interferring with schoolwork. Her reply was, "Kyle is Raymon's brother? Like...REAL brother?" I was shocked that she would even question it! My son is white, while his brother is African American and white. Anyway...I'm not sure how this fits in with this thread, but I was just trying to show the closed mindedness of people when there's different colors of skin involved.

Sounds more like an infraction slip!! Sounds like the schools are getting the babies ready for juvi, which gets them ready for prison. Because of the breakdown of the family structure in the home -- everything is just a mess!!

Ok I have two toddlers, one ready for preschool. You just gave me an idea of things to come. You are like what 5 or 6 in kindergarden. How can you give detention to them? That's nonsense. They should teach them, not punish them. Teach the positive.
The slip seems like it was written for someone that committed a minor crime or something. I don't think a school detention slip needs to mention race.

One luv you are so right .. Christy that is why i was asking if that is what bothered her cause i just assumed it was a standard form.. i would hope it was. out here they arent as strict as some of the things i hear.. but up north they would write them up if their shoelaces were untied more than 5 times a week while they were in the hallway.. which was so dumb ... or if they were talking to loud in the hallway they wrote them up and if they stayed for after care the teacher would go into the after care and pull them out of the activites as a punishment

I think it is odd that they ask the race of the kid on the detention form. I don't know about gender. Too many Kim's etc? is it a huge school?

Ive never heard of dentention for kindergardeners..wow thats pretty harsh. At my sons school he is in 5th grade and they still dont give out detentions. Only in 8th grade.
And I wouldnt fill out the race/ethcinity either..leave it blank. It should not even be ont here, it has nothing to do with anything .

Here it is a standard form. Some teachers fill the form out to the T others dont. Im not seeing a problem with it being on a standard form since there is nothing we can do about that. I dont see it as being racial or pointing the finger at just your child. my main concern would be why is a teacher even haing to write on the form? Whatever happened to a time out ..take away recess... or even contacting the parent when a child misbehaves

This is a NJ school????? My youngest got detention and they don't have race/ethnicity on the slip....is this for real? And since when do kindergartners in NJ get detentions? I thought it was a time out in the little chair next to the teacher's desk???????????????
I'd call the Superintendent of the school system and ask him---never mind the principal--go way over his head and get this fixed. Totally unacceptable to ask a 5 year olds race. What next? His drivers license number---oh, sorry, he's not old enough to drive!!

I would like the name of this school, i live in NJ and I would lovvvvve to voice my opinion about detentions for five year olds, these kids dont even really know the meaning or understanding of a detention.

Me either, cause what difference does that make on a detention slip?

Why are you telling me what color my child is? I know would be my response. But I agree with the detention thing my son is five and he got in school suspension for a day for hitting another child. You need to get these kids under control now while they are doing minor things instead of waiting till they are sixteen and then trying to discipline.

I remember at five being taken in the hall and getting swats from the teacher so there punishment seems pretty minor.
