Children to get jabs against drug addiction

A radical scheme to vaccinate children against future drug addiction is being considered by ministers, The Independent on Sunday can reveal.

Under the plans, doctors would immunise children at risk of becoming smokers or drug users with an injection. The scheme could operate in a similar way to the current nationwide measles, mumps and rubella vaccination programme.

wow! if it actually works that would be awesome, seeing as my kids dad and i are both addicts they need something in their favor to prevent the spiral of addiction!

It would be great if it really works but it also worries me. They are so quick to pump out drugs and vacines and I have to say I worry about a vacine that will alter how the brain functions and the person thinks later in life. They do have to come up with something I hope, its all so out of control. I will post anything else I find regarding this.

I wonder how long it would last - it seems goofy to give little kids shots about preventing cocaine but teenagers? That would be great if it worked.

Thank you for posting that. The drugs mentioned in that article are drugs they are using on current addicts in an experimental phase to prevent relapse etc. I am hoping that good things will come out of it. There has been mixed results so far.
With the child vacine, I have to wonder how the government intends to make a decision on whether a child is at risk to being an addict. I suppose in a few cases its pretty clear but there are so many addicts that are because of childhood abuses and other trama that even the governments do not know about and often the family doesnt know. Though if it works it could save many lives and save the taxpayers a lot of money, I dont know why they wouldnt vacinate all children unless of course there is a risk involved which they are not mentioning at this point. It worries me that there could be a major risk and in the minds of government a future addict is worth risking perhaps? If that is the case that is very disturbing. It would be great to have a miracle cure to all these addictions but not at the price of a childs life when it isnt even for certain that a child will become an addict. I hope they put a lot of money into this and govern the results independently from the drug companies. I think that a vacine like this has to cause a major change within the brain in order to be effective and that is not 'kids play' as far as Im concerned.
Lets hope they get it right. Or perhaps better still put more money into helping kids before they become addicts because Im not sure I feel comfortable with this vacine concept. If it works, why cant they give it to existing addicts that have nothing to lose and have tried everything else instead of children ?

i heard somewhere that they can see somewhere in the brain whether or not someone is predisposed to addiction, through a ct or mri or something. i also wonder about pumping drugs into children and worry if we are doing more harm then good. plus i wouldn't want to change my childrens personality. i think the best way is to raise them to have a good self esteem and a solid foundation and courage to say no!

If you come across that article regarding childrens brains and being predisposed to addiction I would be very interested in reading it. I think it would be great to know if a child is in that situation and early intervention could probably help a lot.
