As far as I know they have been on lockdown since Monday and I had taken time off work to visit this weekend :( Pray that they are off lockdown by then for me please! I haven't heard the reason they are locked down. Does anyone know? My baby is going crazy in there...he has been looking forward to this visit for 7 weeks!

I have a friend in USP TH who calls regularly and he doesn't know anything about a lockdown.

It could depend on the facility. When the USP goes on lockdown in Terre Haute, the other facilities are also locked down, but the camp still runs pretty much as normal.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that everything's restored to normal by the weekend and you can visit!! Be sure to call ahead of time though! Zelda

Just called today and the officer informed me that visits are cancelled for the weekend at the USP. I am sure the medium and camp are still running as normal. I havent heard from my baby since sunday though and he was sooo looking forward to this visit!

I spoke to my Jay earlier tonight.

The USP is on lockdown because the guards found out that the prisoners were planning to "take over" the prison.

Live ammunition was found.

Live ammunition???? What in the heck is considered live ammunition within a prison? I wonder what Unit this was found in? I hope it wasn't in my baby's unit! Any prediction of how long they could be on lockdown for?

Jay'sgirl: Is that information directly from an inmate who is in Terre Haute USP or is it a rumor? Zelda

I just got off the phone wuth Jay.

The guards were tipped off about the riot by several inmates.
Live bullets were found as well as escape maps.
Looks as though the USP will be on lockdown for another week.
They were tearing out walls because the warden still had not found what he was looking for.

.................................................. ..
I guess I understand why an inmate who has a life sentence would want to escape. It's not like they have anything to lose. But sadly, their actions effect other inmates and hurts those who not able to visit because the prison is on lockdown. My heart goes out to those who are not able to visit right now because of this.

Do you know if they can still get mail when on lockdown? I'm new to this site and just want to say how great this is. My boyfriend's mother and I have been worried because he hasn't called all week so to be able to get information like this is great.

I am assuming mail does still get delivered. I have been sending mail to Nick as normal...hoping it will get him through this hard time without visits and calls. Jaysgirl....u said another week...does that mean I could visit next weekend? I am trying to decide whether or not I should get the shifts covered at work. I need to go as soon as possible to see him...it has been way too long! Are they tearing down the walls looking for an escape route or what??? I wonder what unit this was in?

In my experience, mail still is delivered during a lockdown. You should call in advance before visiting - there's no way of knowing how long a lockdown like this will last. Zelda

What's the longest lockdown anyone has ever heard of like this? I heard the USP at Terre Haute was locked down for a few months before Nick got there in November.

Terre Haute was locked down for a while during the moving of inmates from the old to new prison, which they did in stages last year. It was also locked down again shortly after due to an inmate death. When my boyfriend was in Terre Haute I would check the TH newspaper and also the Indianapolis newspaper websites just to keep an eye on if anything was being reported.

Longest lockdown probably occurred at Marion USP in the late 1970's - after some guards were killed. The prison is still locked down. Zelda

Any more news on the lockdown at Terre Haute USP?

No news here. I call everyday though and ask if their status has changed. I did ask the officer today and she said mail was still delivered as normal while locked down. I had to be sure since I was mailing a letter everyday. On Thursday morning of each week they make the official determination as to whether visits will be cancelled for that weekend. So I will of course be calling tomorrow. Please anyone with info SHARE!!!!!!!!!

I am sure that many of us are aware that this site as well as others like this site are monitored. I recently was informed that I should have not posted information about the USP in Terre Haute.

To those of you who have boyfriends or husbands there I am sorry that you are not recieving calls or able to visit. Hopefully this situation will be cleared up as soon as possible. But even after you do talk or visit with your boyfriend or husband do not post any specific details as to why the prison was on lock down. Better safe than sorry.

Do you mean someone in the BOP told you that you should not have posted or someone on this forum told you that? I don't see why someone should not post about a lockdown or information they had heard about why it occurred. I can see that it would not be wise to give the source of your information or to give specific details about who might be involved. And if it is a rumor then you need to acknowledge that it's a rumor. I know the BOP doesn't like to volunteer any information to the media about what goes on in federal prisons but taxpayers are paying for the prisons and the public has a right to know what's happening. My opinion. Zelda

My husband is too at Terre Haute. He was transfered there last year. Every prison he's been in he has never failed to write me during a lockdown. I have been writing him with no response back from him. This has never happened! I know he has money for supplies so I'm really starting to worry. Has any one else recieved letters from their man during this lockdown? My husband has been in for 6 years and NEVER have I been more than a few days with out a letter.

I received a letter from Nick yesterday and he didnt indicate the reason they were locked down but merely that it sucked and he couldnt wait til it was over. The letter was written on day 6 of the lockdown and it took 7 days to get to me. Kind of longer than normal. Do you know what unit ur man is in?

No I don't know his unit#. He switched cells recently and I haven't even thougt to ask. But I do feel better since you said you got a letter. They are probably screening the mail more than normal if the prison is on lockdown for what has been posted. It may be that it is just taking longer for them to get the mail out to us b'cause of the lockdown. Mabie today I'll get one . Thank you for easing my worries.

My boyfriend wrote in his letter that they had very limited access to the commissary and he was just able to buy stamps on thursday on this past week. I got another letter today that he mailed on friday and it got to me today so that was pretty quick. Hopefully this whole ordeal is over with soon. I need a visit!!

I finally got a letter yesterday. It did take 7 days for me to get it. In my husbands letter he indicated that he had written me before so I gather from his letter that he may have mentioned some reason as to why they were locked down and it was intercepted so I never got it. He did state that he was under the understanding that they would be locked down for a while. i hope that you get to visit soon . I have yet to visit him at TerreHaute I hope to soon . So hopefully you'll have some helpfull info at that time. thanks for the info so far.

Called today and the guard that is there in the morning at the front desk told me that visits would start effective Saturday at 8am. So I assume this is when they will be let out? But I called again later in the evening to double check and the night guy told me that effective tomorrow no visits but to call tomorrow to check for saturday cause its a day by day thing. I trust the guy in the morning more tho because he is actually the one who checks me in when I come to visit. I will call again tomorrow but I am thinking saturday morning the lockdown will be lifted and visits will happen for sat and sun.
