Ok I did this and thank goodness I thought (before mailing it) about asking all you kind people for advice !! I bought a blank card with a picture of a mountain stream on it and inside the card I wrote about an imaginary picnic ..ie walking through the woods with the smell of pines and wildflowers through an imaginary meadow just to the left of the stream finding shapes in the clouds in the sky etc etc then I got to thinking of would this make my dr pal sad or bring about thoughts of things he can no longer experience ?? I am so new to this and just thought it would bring a little diversion to his day but the last thing I want to do is cause him a moments sadness. So should I send it or just scrap it ??? Thanks again all !!!!!

I can't speak for your pal, but I do know mine love it. Because it takes them out of their dreary cell for a few moments. Through our eyes is the only way they can see the world.
I remember taking my daughter to the fair and writing and describing that. One of my pals loved it because he had never been to a fair in his life. He asks in his letter if I was to take him would I buy him a Hot dog, cotton candy and a candy apple. So i went and found those things on the net and printed them out and sent them to him with a story about him going to the fair.

I haven't found any that don't love the stories that free them if only for a moment.

I would send it if I were you.

They live through us and live our dreams. I'd send the card, I'd even make up a token he could exchange for a free picnic with you if he were to come out.

I think it is good idea. As "Schmusi34" said: "They live through us and live our dreams." That is absolutely true.

I usually describe a lot, maybe it is my style, because I work as editor and try to work with my first novel too - writing is my passion.

My friends enjoy my stories and photos - they can see world through my eyes and words.

Enjoy your friendship!

the way i see it,
If i was locked up for hours aday and everyday was just like the next day, with nothing to look at, I think any picture of natural beauty would at leat help me to dream nicer dreams, and looking at pictures makes your own Imagination spring to life, its easy watching mindless television , letting other peoples imaginations tell a story.

so yeah send pictures that are nice, I sent one of my pen pals three christmas cards, the reason was the pictures were of wild animals, and he loves animals, he loved the cards and because they didnt have any christmas messages on the front and because they were not obviously chistmas cards, he can have the on show in his cell, no matter what time of year :D

I agree with the others. Send it! He will be happy of it. Also I had doubts in my first letters, but my pen pal written that he likes to see the world through my eyes... I have described a walk and a dinner with him for the roads of a city. And he likes to imagine us while we are listening together music or we go around for shops.
Send it!

From time to time I'm taking lots of pictures. Animals, the Countryside here, churches, the fireworks of New Years Eve...everything you can imagine! Than I'm writing a little note at the back and send all these pictures to my pal. She's always delighted and puts the pictures on her walls. Since she can't see such things anymore she's always interested in and if you tell her a bit more about some pictures, it is the double pleasure for her.
Just do it!!!

There is nothing colorful on Death Row. Anything that brings a bit of brightness into the place is welcomed more than you can imagine. So by all means, send away!

the sameas the other posters said the guys on d/r love things like that, as one of mine said he has not seen trees grass or flowers in over 20 years, soanything like that brightens their day and lets them escape from the row in spirit for a short time at least

I would definately send this to him. You are his 'eyes' now on the outside and it will most definately bring pleasure to him, rather than make him sad.

I have to second everyone else here: do send it!

A friend of mine is a gifted artist and she drew a beautiful picture of a butterfly on a card for my Florida pal on the row. I got a letter back with a million thanks for the card. She wrote that she had stuck the card to the bunk above her so that when she wakes up in the morning she's greeted with the beauty of it.

As others already said, there's little color in there. You'll see that he'll love it!

I know this is way late but I think this is a wonderful idea.... I have taken pictures of the beach when I go with the kids and share stories of things that happen with my pen pal. It brings a smile to my face again when he writes back to say how he laughed about this thing and that. Sharing whatever part of our lives we can in such a dismal world means so much.

I guess by now that you have sent it but if you haven't do it. Our friends on DR love to hear about everything in as much detail as possible. I live in the country and I jog over the hills in the morning. I think that P probably knows the fields and the sound of the birds and the feeling of the sun on my back just as well as I do.

Your friend will absolutely love it!

I'm pretty sure I saw something like this on a page with advice about what to write to DR penpals. Mine used to love it when I described scenery and anything about the outside world basically, he asked that I did it more often. It's like reading a book, one's imagination makes one picture oneself in the middle of nature and "live" that moment.
