Hi all,

I'm not sure if I'm posting in the right place here but is there anyone out there with first hand experience of the South African court and prison system? My closest friend has a court case coming up next month and he could be facing a fairly long prison sentence.

I am in the UK at the moment but will be flying back to SA to be with him soon and I'm sick with worry over not knowing what will happen to him. He's such a sensitive and gentle person that I really can't imagine how he will cope in prison. I have been reading some of the horror stories in the Africa and Middle East forum and I'm so scared for him that I just don't know what to do. Please does anyone have any reliable, first hand info?

Thanks, Karen

First Off I need to know where he lives - Not his address but which area in South Africa he lives and if you could PM me with some information I might be able to tell you what to expect. Please just remember that this is South Africa and the prison conditions are not quite like Africa or M/E.

Where can I get a list of prisons in South Africa?

I did respond to your PM - as far as giving you a list of the prisons in South Africa - I have tried to find this out myself. Depending on the offence and are that they lived they could end up in different places. If it was Cape Town then you would want to try Pollsmoor, but dont expect too much.

By the sounds of it if your friend is white the best thing that he can do is run, run far away, leave the country.
