View Full Version : Who has taken Physics e_wife03 01-07-2006, 01:31 AM They just added Elementary Physics to the list of classes i have to take for my degree.. i was wondering can any one tell me what to expect for that class.. .. nimuay 01-07-2006, 05:34 AM Expect to have your socks knocked off! Physics is a stunning view of the physical properties of the world/universe that will involve a good deal of math. Depending on the level, it can involve a good deal of memorization of formulae, too. trnd_around 01-07-2006, 11:29 AM If your algebra skills are up to snuff, you shouldn't have too much of a problem. Physics is based on algebraic formulas...I'm saving it for my last semester of school:p techietype 01-07-2006, 02:37 PM If you are also at some point going to take a calculus course, I recommend that you do that first. It will make make physics a little bit easier, because once you know a little calculus you can pretty simply derrive some of the formulas instead of having to memorize them. Calculus will also refresh some of your basic trig knowledge, which is also handy to know before you start physics. If you already know how to take a derrivative, and understand the meaning of sin and cosine, you are well ahead of the game. If not, I'm sure that they will explain what you need to know as the course goes along. Physics I is basically the study of motion and and force. You will learn how to calculate things like how fast an object thrown off a 100' tall building will hit the ground, or how much work does it take to drag a 20 lbs weight along a 30' long ramp that rises 10'. Properly done, the course can be quite interesting, but it will also be a lot of work. e_wife03 01-08-2006, 09:25 PM see this is what i dont understand .. i am taking elem physics but they also have physicsI and other physic class i wonder what is the difference with elem and phy I techietype 01-09-2006, 01:16 AM If I had to make a guess, Physics I is part of a three course series designed for engineering students and others seeking a four year degree in a technical field. The primary topic in Physics I is Mechanics and motion, Physics II is about electricity and magnetism, and Physics III is devoted to wave theory and optics. All three courses place a strong emphasis on mathematical problem solving. In fact, in many ways the courses are specialized math courses. It is a very rigorous set of courses with lots of homework. I've taken the courses, but it was a long time ago. Elementary Physics sounds a bit simpler. You will probably run into no calculus and fairly simple trig and algebra. The topics are essentially the same as in the more difficult course, but will be covered with less depth. The test and homework problems probably won't be as tricky. I'm not saying that you will find it a cake walk, but it is easier than Physics I. e_wife03 01-10-2006, 02:24 AM thanks so much for the explanation.. i appreciate it .. thank you all .. i am thinking if i should take it for summer school JohnBrandi4life 01-10-2006, 03:15 AM LOL...I don't want to know what to expect. That is soooo hard, well at least to me. I wish you luck girl!~~~Brandi MrsBenji 01-13-2006, 04:55 PM Lordamercy, I'm late, but that's because I never enjoyed Physics. And I took the 1,2, and 3 that Techie mentioned. Labs were fun, but UGH... LEARN your formulas. LEARN them. Especially the basic ones. If you have the basics, you can derive the other ones further along. Study. ANd use your examples!!! GOOOOOD LUCK!!! Jenn |
