I heard a while back they were going to ban smoking in all Canadian prisons. Did this ever happen? I can't believe something like that could happen without a major protest by the inmates. Can anyone say for sure?

Where ringo was at first in reception he couldn't smoke but in the section he's in now he can. Part of the reason he took federal time was because his lawyer told him smoking was still allowed in federal prisons. So far so good, for him anyway. By the way - welcome to PTO!!!! Sue witchlinblue 01-06-2006, 12:34 AM There are a few newspaper articles in this forum regarding this that should answer your question. http://www.prisontalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=138308&highlight=smoking http://www.prisontalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=103139&highlight=smoking http://www.prisontalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=103136&highlight=smoking Kettricken 01-06-2006, 12:13 PM I just heard from my man that in Matsqui they aren't gonna be allowed to smoke inside anymore after the 31st ... doesn't affect him, he doesn't smoke ;) stevesboo23 01-06-2006, 09:43 PM The provincial jails here in ontario have been nonsmoking for probally close to 2 or 3 years now... they are talking the same thing for federal prisons too. I dont know how you could take smoking away from a lifer..... but then again i will never understand the system fully. LovinJus 01-17-2006, 06:00 AM In where J is they got a memo stating that the smoking ban would come into effect April 1st of this year. I would assume it would be the same across the country since they are Federal Institutions but I don't know for sure. Erin stevesboo23 01-17-2006, 10:32 PM I would assume the same. Yoosgirl 03-23-2006, 06:51 PM I don't know how they get it in, but in one provincial facility my man was in it cost 90 dollars for a package of tabacco, they tear up the bible for paper to roll them and something with a light bulb to light it? witchlinblue 03-23-2006, 11:40 PM Well one skill they do learn in prisons is resourcefulness, without a doubt !! LovinJus 03-24-2006, 10:40 AM I think in the prisons they are still allowed to smoke, but it can only be in certain areas...ie..outside only. That's how it is where J is anywas. I remember when he was in county smoking was not allowed at all but yes they were very resourceful in getting/lighting cigarettes. It's best not to think about how they got tobacco in there trust me. But yeah they would stick the cigarette in a light socket to light their smokes if I recall correctly. Also I think the period of recieving the patch and Nicorette for free is running out. I think the memo said they could get the supplements for free for 3 months which would bring it to April 1, 2006. I am also very proud to say that my J has quit smoking and so have I! It was something we were actually able to do "together" and it helped to know he was doing it too even though he was not here. Going on 3 months! Yay us and all the other guys on the inside who have quit! Erin ringoswife 04-08-2006, 05:41 PM They tried to ban smoking in Allouette (provincial) but a compromise was reached that allowed us to smoke outside away from the buildings. With over 100 women in there I only met 3 that didn't smoke and one of those actually quit inside!! In Mountain (federal) where ringo is they could smoke in their cells until the ban came into effect and now it's outside only as well. aaronsgirl 04-08-2006, 06:33 PM aaron told me that in KP they can only go for a smoke at yard and if ur lucky u can sneak one in your cell. theyve also banned smoking in the visit rooms(which is nice for me since im really allergic to cigarette smoke). ill ask him all the details next time we talk :) Inadaze 10-27-2006, 07:35 AM My hubby is in Maplehurst.....and there is NO smoking period! Not even outside!!! I know they are being punished...but come on!! Give them at least that! |
