Hi,

Thanks

Susan, I am no expert, but most Greyhound buses dont drive right to the facility. I once got dropped off in the middle of nowhere!! and me and this girl had to hitch hike!! it was a nite mare. There are many buses that cater to the prisons, if u need a few numbers, holla back!

I have to agree with roc city girl. Most prisons are in the middle of nowhere to begin with where Greyhound doesn't have stops. I've researched before so I wouldn't put so many miles on my car and it was a useless search.

Hey, my Boo was in Ulster, I took a bus up to see him a few times, it was $40 to $50. The bus picks you up in different areas of the city, for me it was Jamaica Queens by the LIRR train station. I don't have the number for the company right now, but I will find it & as soon as I do I wil post it for you.;)

Also, Ulster is a transfer facility, so your loved one might not be there for long. You MUST call the facility before visiting him and they will tell you if he will still be there. Best of luck, i'm working on getting the number for you.

I guess Rikers was just a walk in the park... does anyone know anything about Ulster? (sounds like something that'll grow in my stomach from being an alcoholic...) *slight humor*
my "husband" was just moved there yesterday and i would just like to know when they can make phone calls, send letters etc.
thanks.. :)

ulster is about five hours away from nyc. there is a van service that picks you up at your house for visits called happy journey, call information cause i lost that number since they moved my fiance. as for the phone calls it should be immediately. they start at about ten/eleven in the morning and end at ten at night. you can send them letters and pictures but no polaroids. If he is moved his mail follows him because of his din #. the only thing is that they don't allow any packages except for cigarettes and money. good luck.

Wow..thank you so much.
So mail follows them around?
Can you give me an example of how to address a letter..say to Ulster?

Hanksmom
02-20-2004, 10:51 AM
there name ther din number the name of the correctional facility and then the address. Ulster is okay to visit. Find out what they last number of his din number you can only visit according to that. You can visit the whole weekend if you want. Bring change for the vending machines.

So Ulster's Address has a PO Box?
i just want to make sure i'm sending it to the right place

So i would address my letter:
Name of Inmate
DIN
Ulster Correctional Facility
P.O. Box 800, Berme Road
Napanoch, New York 12458

?

I went to Ulster for the first time this weekend. They have odd/even visiting weekends based on the last number of your mans inmate id. Last weekend was odds. Its only about two hours from NY. I went on Prison Gap and got back to the city before 5PM yesterday. The bus leaves in the morning at 5:30 AM at 58th and Broadway. Its much nicer than Rikers. Only thing -don't wear an underwire bra. Mine set the alarm off, so I had to go in the bathroom take it off and put it in a paper bag the Co had given me. Walk back thru the metal detector and then put it back on. Otherwise no problems.

HisOnlyDyme
02-23-2004, 06:49 PM

i wasn't going to visit, but now i just might!

I knew a few people who were at Ulster in 2001, and I went to visit once. First you have to know that Ulster is rreception and Cadre program. All the people I knew there were Cadre, and at that time there was no odd/even visits, maybe it's has changed. I do remember that the ride was not long, it was $35 round trip and they picked me up at my door, actually I paid I think $5 more for that as I took my son who was one at the time. I really liked the atmosphere there, in comparison to other places.

They usually pack them up the night before then have them waiting in recieving until they go to the new destination. But once they tell him to pack up he can call you and tell you because they won't let him call again until he reaches his destiantion. Good luck. I think they keep them in ulster for about two weeks or so.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me which bus/van service is best to take to Ulster County.

I would also be helpful to have some information on visitation policies. For example, is there anything that I should not bring with me like a cell phone?

Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks.

You can only bring cigarettes and money. Bring change for the vending machines. Bring picture indentification. I know that there is abus service that goes there, but don't know the name. Call up the facility and they will tell you some of them. If you drive it is a really easy drive. The co is check in is really nice. I would also call and ask if it is his weekend. They go by and odd even but you can visit the whole weekend. Good luck and if there is anything else that you need to know let me know. Paula

My boyfriend has been in downstate since June 28th, where he was sent from being in Clinton Correctional Facility for 4 days. I received a call from him that day and it lasted 10 minutes. He said he would write to me as soon as possible, but i still have not received a letter. He's not there for long, just waiting to be transferred to Willard Drug and Treatment Center (kinda like shock) for violating parole. I know he hasnt been transferred yet b/c i called to make sure he was still there. I'm just worried b/c my boyfriend is the type that when he's upset and depressed he'll block everyone out and try to get through it on his own. Although he promised he wouldnt ignore me, I havent received a letter and i'm not sure if he just isnt able to write yet or truely is ignoring me. So my question is, do you know how long it taked for him to be able to write to me? Thanks very much. Any information would help.

Yes, I finally got a letter from him this morning. It had me very upset that i hadnt heard from him!! He said in his letter he was just waiting for an envelope. Also in his letter he stated that they gave him a pack up bag on sunday july 3rd, but i called today and he is still there. Why would they give him a pack up bag when they ended up keeping him another week and probably longer anyways?

thanks for responding.

Well, i'm still confused as hell. Its has been 8 days since they gave him a pack up bag and he is still there. I asked them if they knew when he would be drafted and they said no. I was also wondering when the draft days are also. Are they everyday or certain days? If they are just on certain days then i know i can stop calling downstate everyday and bugging them to see if he is still there. Also, if anyone wants to know, I wrote to him on friday night and sent it in the mail. I called downstate to see what happens if my mail doesnt get to him while he is still there. They said that the mail will follow him wherever he goes. So, if anyone wanted to know, there is an answer. Well, let me know about the draft days please. Thanks

I was also wondering. I called the status line to see if they knew anything about my man being transferred. And they said he was at downstate reception. Does the "reception" mean anything different then just being at downstate? Does it mean he is going to be transferred soon or anything? I'm hoping so. Oh, and if anyone wants the inmate status and movement # for New York inmates, it is 518-457-6022. As long as you have the din # they can tell you where an inmate is located.

lots of things in the doc make no sense! Good Luck Jenny :)

the system--my son spent 2 months at Elmira reception waiting for placement. But he didn't get bags till the day he was moving so I can't help you there. If you are in Reception, it means you are there till they find a place for you elsewhere. If they gave him bags, it would seem they plan to move him--but who knows--they give you bags when you change cells too my son says. As for days--I wouls assume any day but maybe Fri, Sat, Sun would be likely. My son was moved on a Wed. But that is a guess and commons sense and we know how far that goes with DOCS.

And from elmira they only forward mail for 2 weeks--do not know about Downstate.

Well thanks for the information. Well, he just called me. I guess he gets a 5 minute phone call every two weeks. He's so confused on why he's still there b/c he got a pack up bag 8 days ago. It was good to hear from him though. I've been going crazy not hearing from him. He said he wasnt even going to call b/c he was worried about my phone bill. He's such a sweetheart. I'm glad he called though. Thanks for all the info everyone has been giving me. All though it seems we are all completely clueless why he got a bag and still hasnt been transferred, just the support everyone is giving is incredible and it means alot.. thanks so much.

Manzanita
07-13-2005, 07:42 PM
good question

qtboyd7588
07-13-2005, 08:33 PM
Well, i did ask someone else if they knew anything about it and this was his responce, so if anyone else has a question like mine.. here is the answer:

Fines have nothing to do with a state transfer. 90% of the time, an inmate gets to their final destination within 6 to 8 work days. But, being they have a hold on him because they are waiting for a bed at therapeutic prison...it might be any day. They just need bed space to open up at that prison. Regular inmates simply get transferred when there is a bed open...no mater where the prison is. That is the only thing I can think of, of why it is taking so long.

As for the fines, they are misdemeanors and have nothing to do with a state sentence, a state parole violation, etc;
I had over 100 fines for jumping the subway before I got my felony charge and by the time I got out, those fines expired. So, you need not worry about fines holding up his transfer.

good question, maybe???

He was moved to Ulster Correctional Facility. It's upsetting b/c i dont understand why they would move him from one reception area to another. Well i got a call from him today.. actually like 3.. lol!! He is only at Ulster for the weekend.. basically just a place to stop and rest till he gets to Willard. I got myself all upset and worried over nothing. He's leaving for Willard tomorrow. His sentence is 90 days at Willard, so we can start counting down monday or tuesday. All depends when he gets there. As far as his fines go, he never had court and he doesnt know why they told me that. So, as long as i pay his fines, the warrant will be lifted/dropped. THANK GOD!! I was told they would go concurrent with his jail time but i think that since he only has 90 days, that it might still effect him. I'd rather be safe than sorry. The conversations went really well. Pretty expensive but they went good. Thanks again for all your help!!

Well, due to security reasons they are NOT going to tell you the day he is leaving or where he is leaving to, as you could be waiting for him somewhere along the way. It just takes time. The DOC does what they want, when they want and have no regard for making anything easier on anyone. They do waht is easiest for them, which is to have him packed up way before he's leaving so that they don't have to worry about it later and when he does go, they just throw his bags in.

I'm pretty sure inmates cannot receive any packages through the mail at Ulster; but they can recieve tobacco on a visit.

I was only there for 2 days on a transfer, I remember everyone was begging for tobacco.

Visits are like any other medium; weekends only it's based on an even/odd DIN.
