A few inmates serve their entire sentence at Tracy, but DVI is a reception center. Inmates are generally just passing through. It's likely that your son will be there for a month or perhaps 2; and will then be housed elsewhere once his security classification is determined.

Hi, I have a brother at DVI. I've been there twice to see him and plan on going this month. It's not that bad. We talk all the time. The place isn't that dirty but it's not that clean either. JUST KEEP YOUR HEAD UP.

My husband has been there since March 2005 and is going to serve his whole sentence there. All I can say about DVI is that while there in classification it suck no phone calls and it does take for ever to get your visitation approved. But once they mainline it's okay my husband is in the Ranch part of DVI witch is Outside Dorm across from the main prison. We have family visits also aside from regular visits it's not bad but it does smell like cow :).

My fiance has been there since April 06, just got sentenced Oct. 30, 06. I have been visiting since July. I visit every weekend. Reception inmates do NOT get to make phone calls. Only mainline inmates do. The only problem with reception visiting is making the appointment... takes forever to get through!! The visiting areas are not to bad, the place is well worn. But I have yet to see a new looking prison!! They are all pretty beat up. I'm just waiting to see where my fiance ends up at. Hopefully close to home. But we will see!! Reception is a pretty crowded place. But there aren't to many prisons in California that are not crowded!!

DVI has to be one of the most overcrowded! They have no "vocational" training going on there now since all the classrooms are dorms with bunk beds. The day rooms and gym are dorms with bunk beds. Some of the open areas outside the cells are now also dorms. My son is an inmate in reception and is finally OFF lock down. What does this mean? It means he now gets to go on the yard for 1 1/2 hours every Monday. That is it. It is too crowded to provide any more for him that that.

Now I have been threw that when my guy was in the county jail I had a block on block numbers or unkown and my phone company said it would not interfear with my collect calls and I told them where the would be coming from and the said no but that was a lie cuz my guy still could not get threw untill I took the block off after that he had no problem getting threw but hey if they are in DVI you dont have to worrie about that cuz there are on phone calls allowed untill they are mainlined I think.

The calls will come through UNKNOWN so you should have the block taken off or at least call your phone carrier and double check...
