My son's parole was granted on Monday, but with the condition that he enter a residential SAP program until at least his original release date which was 5/2006. The parole board said that even though they can not force him to go to a program after 5/2006 these programs make you sign up for a year. So I'm not sure what that means, does he have to pay if he drops out or what is it that would keep him from quitting, do they charge him money like a lease or something. I'm looking for something close to Huntsville because he has a daughter there. I know he would rather do his time until May than go for another year somewhere. I think that he would enter a program that he could be released in May or maybe even a 6 month program. Has this happened to anyone, or does anyone have any information on programs in that area. Any information would be appreciated.

Hi amberlen,
First let me welcome you to PTO, sorry you have to be here, but glad you found us. I’m not sure what your son’s drug of choice is or how long or how deeply he is addicted. But, I personally am a big believer of a rehab or sober house as a transition between the very structured environment of prison and the street. At both a rehab or a sober living home, they will pick up more tools needed to overcome cravings, learn about their addiction, learn life skills and new behaviors. They usually are required to attend meetings, group and individual therapy, have house chores, and be held accountable for their actions and reactions. From what I have experienced with my exbf (and this may vary from state to state, or program to program) he was usually required to pay by the month. When he walked out (which unfortunately he walked out of most) he would just lose the money that was remaining for that month. If your son is required to pay 6 months in advance, and left, he would likely lose the remaining balance. However, I would call or have him write to the centers before he applies to see what their financial rules are. Below, is the information I have on rehabs, etc. for Alabama. If as part of his parole he is required to reside at a sober living facility he would risk the chance of being violated if he were to leave before his completion date. He could also speak with his case manager or lawyer/public defender about getting helped being placed into a state funded program. Hope this helps.

Thank you very much for that information. There are alot of places there that I had not heard about. As the days go by, that sounds like what he will have to do. His official release date was 5/2006 so it looks like he will have to attend one of these programs until at least that date. He says he wants to go, so thats good. I just was not sure that he would do a whole year. Thanks again, this information is very helpful. This site is great. I don't know how I would have made it the last year without the information I have received here.
