View Full Version : How are inmates informed?
Bonehead 12-10-2005, 04:13 PM Hi all, hope all are well,
I was just wondering how death row inmates (especially Texas) are informed of an execution date. Is it done in court? Private meeting with the warden? It would be interesting to find out the various states attitudes towards this particular task.
Any info appreciated.
Thanks
Sully 12-10-2005, 11:51 PM Good question. Assuming that the inmate has legal representation, I would imagine that his or her attorney is notified after the execution warrant is signed. It can't come as much of a surprise, as it goes pretty quickly after one's appeals are exhausted. Still, though, I can't imagine the feeling of hearing that a date has been set.
Thankfully, my dear friend on death row hasn't had that experience. Does anyone else have any idea?
mervsgirl 12-11-2005, 12:04 AM In Texas they are taken back to the County of conviction for the death warrant to be signed by the Judge.
This is after the State has determined that ALL appeals have been exhausted.

Pretty barbaric if you ask me!!!
HuGzz 'N StUff 12-11-2005, 11:30 AM My Husbands Attorney's called him and notified him that he had received a date, that is in Ohio. I knew it before my husband did, the Media knew it before he did. I was so afraid it was going to come across the TV or Radio and he was going to hear it like that. Ugh! Hope that is of some help.
softheart 12-11-2005, 12:53 PM Tracy was told by his attorneys, all though like with John's Muffins everyone else knew before that.
I think it depends on the State of what their procedures are.
But I would think somewhere somehow the attorneys or courts have to be involved in telling the inmate.

InLuvWithD 12-11-2005, 04:53 PM wow that gives me chills..I couldn't imagine.....God Bless inmates on death row and their families who have to wait for such terrifying news....
Zapatista 12-11-2005, 09:43 PM There is a good article on Cali DR inmate kevin Cooper's web site about how he was notified of his date. Website removed please see PTO Rules and Policies
PattisPleasures 12-12-2005, 12:13 PM Some places just tell them. I would imagine some hear it from lawyers. I hated delivering bad news...but it came in handy last week to have all that experience. I always told them I would be happy to talk, get them a call if possible...I never rushed a man out of my office. I felt so bad one time as an officer was just reprimanded for leaving a notice in the file box, just threw it at the guy and did nothing else. An inmate and I were discussing this and I mentioned I never do that. I bring the man into my office and gently deliver it myself. Guess I was gearing up....that same man got a death notice that night. But we were at ease and things went well and he was appreciative.
tami73us 12-13-2005, 10:38 PM I couldnt not imagine the wait and torment it would have on a persons mind not knowing when they was gonna get THE NEWS and then they feeling when they did receive it !!!!
GoldieGirl 12-15-2005, 08:39 PM This thread is making me rethink my position on the death penalty.

I Hope that means it is in a good way you are rethinking!!!!!
Just Me 1973 12-16-2005, 12:25 PM Most of them know they are getting a date. They know if they lost their appeals, and they know it is just a matter of time. The attorney of one my friends is going to call the unit if a date is set. Last time he had a date he was informed by someone at the unit.
Earls Mom 12-18-2005, 12:42 AM I think that it doesn't really matter how and when they hear it. That has got to be the worst feeling of all. Victims and family. I've never known anyone on death row but I have a son in prison for a long time and i know that there are some serious flaws in our system. Sometimes its hard to beleive this could happen in the great USA. Not to get political but have you noticed. I think I will change how I vote next year. I am sorry for my past votes and I apolagize to all of you and your loved ones. I apolagize to my son. We took Sadam out because he tourtured and killed. What are our leaders doing?I'll say no more.God Bless You All.Earls Mom.
liberaldog 12-20-2005, 06:19 PM My boyfriend has had two execution dates set. The first time he GOT A LETTER IN THE MAIL. The second, he was coming in from yard and they pulled him aside and the warden told him. They have two weeks after notification to carry out the execution. This is so hard to talk about :( Oh, he's in Georgia.
Eldon's wife 12-20-2005, 09:53 PM It won't matter how they tell my husband, the news will still be the same and still seem as cold, if from another. I would like to hope that if someone has to deliver that news, at this point that I will hear first to be able to tell Eldon myself. Noone else, who would be assigned the responsibility could ever fully understand the impact of the words that they would speak, on our lives. I fear this moment greatly, as I pray daily, for the miracle that will save us from that pain.
Patti, I daily pray that more like you will find their way, into the system.
Julius got the "Death Warrant" in the mail. He sent it on to me. When I received it I called his attorney and he didn't know anything about it. A few days later his attorney let me know he got his in the mail.
Gotta love Texas..............:blah:
