There are a number of different readibility formulas out there. Most of them work by counting the number of syllables verses the number of words in a sample set of sentences or paragraphs. The more polysyllabic words per paragraph or sentence, the higher the readibility level.

If you Google readibility level you will find a number of different techniques and formulas.
