I wrote this poem today for the family of Johny Martinez, who has been murdered by the state yesterday...

A beautiful bird
Locked in a cage
For years
No one saw his colors
No one heard his song
The darkness came
Trying to make the world
Forget
But instead
They set him free
So he spread his wings
And disappeared
In the darkness of the night
Leaving a memory
Not to faint
But to hold on to
Asking:
"Smile for me
Because I'll be waiting for you
And we'll meet again
One day..."
