I am curious of what types of jobs you can get with a criminal justice degree? I see so many people on here with criminal justice as their major and was curious of what it has to offer. Details would be great.:)

I don't have a degree in this, but I have a friend who took the classes. I also took two classes in their curriculum while getting my degree. Most of the people in the classes I was in were going for some sort of law enforcement job...police officer, correctional officer, dispatcher, maybe even probation/parole officer.

I'm getting my Bachelors in Criminal Justice and then my Masters in Forensics, I want to work as a ballistics expert in a crime lab, but if I can't do that I always have the basic cop job as well. There are a MILLION things you can do with this degree...

Do these jobs pay well? And is the demand high for them? I have often thought about a career in substance abuse couseling but I am so tied up in nursing, I never really presued it.

The pay depends on where you are living, your degree, and the number of years you put in. I don't think that many people with these jobs are in it for the money, they are doing it because they are passionate about it. I mean, the pay isn't minimum wage, but there are also high risks involved - if you're talking law enforcement.

I would suggest you find someone to talk to in the field that you are interested in - directly. This is what I did and it really helped me out when it came to figuring out what I want to do and what to expect.

Sure thing. Talking to someone who's in the career you are interested in REALLY helps, plus, they can tell you other related careers, and introduce you to other people :)

I just recently changed my major to Criminal Justice and I'm wondering, and maybe some of you have too, how easy or difficult it will be to get a job with a law enforcement agency considering your man is a convict? This fact alone was keeping me away from pursuing that major. It would seem like it's a conflict of interest to be in law enforcement and then be with or married to someone that's incarcerated. That's not something that I would think I would want my co-workers to know.

Has anyone else had these same thoughts? Or would that be discrimination on their part? To deny employment based on the fact that your husband or wife is incarcerated.

You took the words right out of my mouth. That has kind of held my back too.

Well they do do background checks and you will be expected to explain your significant others incareration. They cannot fault you for something that he has done but this can weigh against you. What I've been thinking about a lot, is, if my coworkers found out, would I be able to stand up to the horrible scrutny that they will put me under - and I'm not just talking normal stuff, they will be RUTHLESS from what I've heard.

All of this considered, if this is something that you really want to do, you can do it, you just have to be willing to push hard enough. Anyway, given the circumstances, I don't believe it's discrimination but I would recommend calling a local police station and asking if this would rule out someone for employment.
