I want to send ringo some money for his account. The money he took in with him is still at the first place he was in - a month later!! Anyway, would a cheque or money order be better? and who would I make it out to? ringo? or the prison? Thanks.

Dont send a cheque, send a money order and make sure his name and inmate number is clearly marked on it. You can also phone the place he was before and tell them that he is still waiting for his money to be transferred and ask what the hold up is.

Yup send a moneyorder! Just put his name on there and your name on there as the sender and they will deposit it into an account for him...usually takes 1 day after they receive it

Thanks witchlinblue! I'll have to find out where he was before! I'm not sure if HE even knows. He wasn't there very long before they moved him.

A month is pretty long for his money not to be following him but trust me they can get very behind. We are still chasing 67 bucks from where my husband was last year, but that is in the states. You get to get on them about it. If he was ordered to pay an court fees or anything like that they may have taken the money but he should get a statement that would explain that. If not then it needs to be tracked down. His caseworker/councillor should be able to help him with that too.

Hi Sue!

I sent cash, money order and cheque. I wanted to see what got to him quicker etc. The cash was put on right away, same as the money order. The cheque, even though it has cleared my bank account, doesn't clear for him until Dec 15th. So that is something i won't do again. For now on, its money order. When I go down tommorow, I am going to add some money to his account.

As for where he was before, try North Fraser Pretrial and Surrey Pretrial. I believe they are both in our BC prisons profile. Just call and say "My husband was incarcerated on Oct 24th and I believe he was in holding at your facility. Do you have any record of his money" If you say exactly how much, they are probably more likely to tell you whether he was there or not. I was told that money would follow the inmate no matter where they come from or go to. 5 weeks is ridiculous though!! Maybe the money is in his "personal items"

Good luck!
T

As ringo says - out here we think in terms of days - in there they seem to think in terms of MONTHS. lol He's learning the fine art of patience but now has no smokes and no money!! He did say NOT to send a cheque when I talked to him last night. He'll be phoning again today and I'm going to ask him where he was before - if he doesn't know I will try phoning those 2 places. Thanks.

My husband is the same, he thinks in months, so do I now because its such a smaller number than 2000 and something.

One thing to be aware of when sending money, it automatically goes into their inmate savings account. They are only allowed to transfer 4 times a year and to a maximum of so many dollars. I know that when i was incarcerated that they dont explain everything so well. and if anyone has someone incarcerated recently, if you send money they take $80 dollars off immediatley and put that into their savings account and they are not allowed to touch it until release! which really sucks!

Can someone explain to me in detail how the cash thing works. To date my friend has received way more than $500 since his incarceration from Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre, to Millhaven, and now Joyceville. All this within the span of 1 year and 4 months. Has he been allowed to touch/spend all this money based on what is said here in previous posts.

He also informs me that he will be working soon in the kitchen for about 3 - 4 months and will be making roughly $100 every two weeks. What happens with this money? Does it all go in his savings or divided between savings, canteen and phone? Because he put $100 on his phone card at Joyceville when he got there in June of this year.
