Hi,
Well, Mark's currently a U.S. citizen in an Ohio prison. He vows that when he gets out he's going to move here (Canada) & start working.
I told him that they probably wouldn't let him in.....& if he were to get thru', we wouldn't be working 'legally'.
I really want him him and away from the b.s. there that he's been thru' for 1/2 or more of his life (he's 40)...I want him to get a frest start & get away from what he knows. He wants this to.
Yet, will the Canadian gov't ever let him in? Yes. I've letters from him from 12 years ago still, but can that, or anything help him become a Canadian citizen???
Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanx,

Kate.

Hey, it's Kate again,
Thought I'd add that he's not really a "citizen". He's one of them old law inmates who got screwed by the new law. Anway, enough from me. G'nte & g'day. Kate.

Kate…my ex is also an old law prisoner in Ohio, so I understand your frustration regarding that issue. As to your question about your loved one immigrating to Canada when he's released, it's my understanding that Canada doesn't allow convicted felons to enter the country at all, unless they receive a pardon, which is next to impossible. I'm not entirely sure about this, however. I think you might want to pose this question in the "Canada" forum.

Good luck to you both,

Adrienne

What do you mean about "0ld law inmate"?

Canada DOES let felons into their country. The rule is this, you MUSt be what they consider rehabilitated. This means it must be atleast 5 years from your final release date. So if you are on parole, then you must wait at least 5 years fron the day you were released from parole. Please review some other posts in this forum. There is quite a bit about this listed here.

Kate,

Bella knows here stuff with this one and I am still learning as I would like to bring my Partner here one day.

Yes, they have to be five years from the completion of their sentence including parole and then there is an application to the Canadian Customs and Immigration Department that must be completed and filed. This apparently can take at least 6 months for approval. From my understanding a pardon may be required but not in all cases.

Browse through this forum and you will find lots of information.

Thank you everyone for your advice......and Adrienne, I'm sorry you're dealing with that stupid Ohio system too.
Take care all.
