Hey all! I was just wondering what is up with the gathering---or family reunion---in March? Is there anything I can do to help...since I am here in Texas?

All of those who are definately planning to come in March please either post here or send me a PM.. If you are not sure but it's a strong possiblilty than please post here too. David and I spoke about some changes that may be made with some details and I need a head count to get the best deal on hotel rates. Thanks everyone!

I can run an extension cord from the garage. Ya gotta love dogs, because they come and go around here Three miles on a washboard dirt road. Sorry guys I have been swamped with work and just got home about 1/2 hour ago. Alright Pam I hope to be there but not sure I will be having a birthday bash for my daughter and future daughter in law rachel , jenni is turning 18 and rachel 17 and we are going to throw a big party for them sometime in march i am hoping we can also attend the get together in college station but unsure at this time, the girls want to rent a ballroom and dj and all the works and since they both have been such good kids we are going to go ahead start making plans effective yesterday but i hope i get to go anyway...Jack wants to go we just returned yesterday from Laredo ..dropped off my baby Sierra i miss her already and she didnt want me to come back to dallas she asked me to quit my job and go live with her oh i felt sad, but i ll get to see her in jan 30th that is her b-day she will be up to celebrate her birthday with me...yeah,,bye for now...Hug....JER

in order for us to make a final decision on where, which in turn will lead to how much, we need to know hoe many people will be comming. The more people, the better the rate will be. For now I can say it will be in Houston Texas March 14-16. As far as price, etc. I can not give definate detail until a final decision is made.

I will be there, but I will not need a place to stay. I have family and friends
in the area.

I would love to come. right now it will depend if i have to 'burn' my vacation time i have to go back to Iowa for a funeral. the woman i consider to be my 'mother' is in liver/kidny failure (15/20% respectively) the dr's say she could last anywhere from a day to 2 years! I HATE it when they do that!
If i feel that i can do it, it will be there. i should be able to stay at a friend's place for lodging, so i would not be needed to be figured into the 'head count' for that expense. as far as 'space', i cna only hope that i can make it.

Willow...there is NO list for room sharing. You will have to contact other members. A few have posted here and I'm sure they are willing to go for it.

If I understand right, ONE person will book the room and pay the $210.00 and then collect from there roomies.

That's the only way I can see it work. I don't see 4 unattacked guys logging in and if I send in 55 bucks, whom am I sleeping with? ~grin~

Head count isn't the issue here, because 5 rooms could handle up to 20 people. The issues is, how many are going to front for a room.

B-ray. In order to share a room, you must establish who you will room with and specify that when you send the payment. The hotel MUST have a list with the name of each person and who is in what room.

Let please remeber that this is a conference. Although we all plan to party and have fun, during the "conference" hours we need not reinforce any negative sterotypes that people have of us. The hotel is well aware of what kind of group we are, and they are very supportive of our conference. Many other hotels were not as open.

I understand that there are going to be a number of people interested in coming but not sure who else is looking for a room mate.
If you want to come to the GTG, and you are looking for a room mate, please make a NEW POST stating something like, "Looking for a Room mate" and your name.
That way other people can more easily identify you and get in touch with you about it.

Please do not request that Michelle/Bella, myself or anyone else hook you up, because we are spending lots of time in the planning stages and don't have much time to do the match making. Using the forum will let everyone see who else is looking.

It has come to my attention that there have been a number of questions on how we came to the rate that we did, and that some people may feel it is too steep.

First, this "Hotel" that we are staying at isn't Motel 6 or some little Howard Johnson truck stop sleep shop. It is a full fledged hotel with all sorts of accommodations, and most importantly, a nice conference room that we are going to be given full access to during our event.

For all of this, paying $110.00 for TWO nights is pretty darn cheap. Yes, you will be sharing a room with someone else but I think $55.00 a night in a nice hotel, including a conference room and snacks/drinks is a pretty darn good price.
I live in Houston and am seriously considering renting a room myself just to be closer to my PTO family.

Now, if you want to stay in this same nice hotel but share the room with 3 other people, your total cost is going to be $55.00 for 2 nights.

From what I read a number of our members are talking Pajama parties, and lots of other fun activities.

Any ways, I just wanted to make a comment on this. I think everyone understands that most of us are on a pretty tight budget. Right now I am scrunching to pay server maint. fees, car insurance and other related charges after hyper-extending my bank account & credit cards during the holidays, BUT, no matter how "broke" I might be, I will find a way to make it happen.
Neither I nor anyone else will be profiting from this conference financial. I am sure I will be going even further into my credit debt because I want us to have a good time. The only thing I intend to profit from this event is personally getting to meet all my extended PTO family and learn more about the Prison System, etc.
This hotel was chosen mainly because of location, facilities and group discount & perks. It was a really good rate. Believe me when I tell you the majority of other comparable hotels were much more & not nearly as flexible.

For those who cannot afford to fly, I have been hearing people talk about carpooling, etc.

I have a question about the credit cards...
Is there anyway to make a payment directly to hotel or... the reason I am asking is if it is done as you suggested Bella, the card gets tapped the much higher fee for a cash withdrawel. I am going to have to use my highest interest card and that 29.9% interest for cash will eat my lunch. And I don't know if anyone has noticed but your monthly payment goes mainly to your charges, just a verry small amount goes to cash charges.
I know, there is always one who wants to mess with the mix.

Dave – I think that you have done a GREAT job on this.

For those of you who have not done events like this, I have done similar things and the time/effort/monies involved in the organization – those hidden costs- can be astounding!

I have been to weekend events where the prices for ONE night in the host hotel are higher than what Dave has found for us here for the 2 nites. And he tells us that the cost includes the ‘hospitality room’ (aka the ‘hostility suite’ Hehehehehehe) And those events, we had to pay a ‘registration fee’ for attending the event to cover the ‘back end’ costs – so this hotel fee sounds to me to be just great! And somethime those fees were over $100.00 for the weekend!

Folks – we are getting off damn good here!

This is just my 2 cents worth on the subject, but I think that we should all be grateful for what Dave and his fellow coordinators are doing for us on this! I know that I am – even if I don’t get to attend!

So let’s hear it for our folks!

You can pay the htole directly only if you book the room on your own, you would then not be part of the PTO group rate. In order to get this rate, PTO must pay in full. Therefore the payment must be submitted. Sorry.

Thanks for the props! This did take many many hours and a lot of "bargaining". There are also a lot of back end costs, however, PTO has no interest in making a profit and I wanted to go with a hotel that was comfortable with who we were when I told them. Again Thanks.

One always has to keep in mind that when traveling, when you first start making plans and checking rates, they do NOT include a lot of "extras"..... When considering the price of the room, you need to keep in mind this is INCLUDING all TAXES, GRATUITIES, etc.... which are quite HIGH.... You also do have to consider the fringe benefits of this hotel... FREE and CONVENIENT transportation to and from the airport, restaurants and lounges right in the hotel, the pool, etc, etc, etc...

Another thing that I think people need to consider is that this IS being organized as a CONFERENCE!! This is not just going to be a "get-to-gether"......
There are LOTS of activities, etc, etc, being planned and a LOT of little hidden costs in getting all of that together... those that are involved in all of that planning are not asking for anything in addition... to cover all that.... not to mention the little costs that rack up just in PLANNING..... Bella is in FLORIDA, planning an event in TEXAS in coordination with others all over the US.... trust that LOTS of (expensive) phone calls have been made already... I will shut up now, because I could go on and on with listing all of the expenses....

Cheena... just a note.... I think if you paid through the "pay pal" on this site, it would come up as a charge, not as a cash advance... you may want to PM David about that.... :)

Anytime I have used PayPal, it always shows as a payment, not an advance on my statement.

Just remember that the transaction fee is paid by the reciever, in this case PTO. So, that fee ($3.50 Bella said) must be added, if using PayPal. (Hotel $210+$3,50=$213.50)

If you do not have an account with PayPal, it's easy and free to set up. PayPal is owned by E-Bay and I've never had a problem in using it!

B-Ray is correct about paypal. If you use paypal to make payment with your visa or master card, it will not be a cash advance. It will be like a regular purchase. I have even used it to get myself cash from one of my own credit cards without the cash withdraw fee.

Yes, I am aware of paypal and am a verified user. David, I'm curious to know how you used it for a cash withdrawl, in the drop down did you indicate cash or that you were purchasing something, i.e. placeing a psudo order through PTO's store

You are mooe than welcome and in fact encouraged to find a roomate inorder to reduce cost. Please contact other members or make a post in this thread/forum if you are interested in sharing a room with others. I know there a few who posted in another thread in this forum...check it out, maybe you can contact them.

All these negative posts are begining to sound like a sack full of martyrs attending a cat fight. Maybe I have missed something or maybe a lot of PM's are being sent but I don't recall reading where anyone is objecting to the fees. There has been many who have expressed the desire to attend but can't because of funds but I believe it is just that, I don't think they could attend if it was $20.00 per night when you add in travel and eats. I know for me, had this been held 6 mos ago, and the rooms were free, I wouldn't have been able to attend and I am less than 200 miles from Houston.
Sorry, just my 2 cents which I know don't count nor are needed but all these stones being cast are giving me a headache.

The rates are very very good. I have not ever paid $55.00 a night for a Hotel Room. If 4 of the Members stay in a room that will only be $13.75 per night. My husband will be traveling with me so I guess we will have to pay the whole $55.00 unless some of you are not embarresed about staying with me and him together. We both will be very willing to do that. We are going to fly, but, will get our tickets from Expedia.com. Their rates are much lower than a travel agent and if you book them a month in advance can be very low.

I too know that cost is a factor for many many people. Please do try to travel together if possible. If you cannot afford the trip, then, we understand. Bella, you have done a great job with this and David so have you. We are very very proud of you.

I would just like to send a big THANK YOU to Fed and Bella for all the hard work they are doing to make this convention possible. If it were not for them working so hard to get us such a great deal I would not have been able to go.

Those who are looking for a ride or a roomie, post what state/city you need a ride from, and if you need other roomies. I am going with Txrenee, although I cannot speak for her if she has confirmed 2 other persons to go with us. We are in Dallas.

By helping each other find someone to room with or ride with, we can make it easier on all of us. Don't be shy if you need a ride or need others to go with you!

Although I'd really like to attend the Conference, lack of funds (have been unemployed for last 6 months) coupled with the distance (live in Phoenix, AZ) make that impossible. Will those of us who'll be there in spirit be able to somehow get our hands on any materials, programs, topics covered, whatever, at a later date?

I plan on recording the meeting(s) on audio cassette. I also have a high speed audio duplicater (60minute tape in 30 seconds), so copies is not a problem. Maybe someone could offer to burn a CD from the audio tape?

So far Jamie, NOTHING has been said of what and when things are going to happen. We got 3 days of something going on in Houston.

There is not really an offical staring time on Friday as people willobe arriving at all different times. The first organized event on Friday...introductions and such will be around 4 or 5 pm.

Bella, I have my own accomodations while down there, that's why I haven't sent money. How many others are doing the same? If you don't get a certain percentage, the hotel is a no-go? How will that effect the conference? Will it still happen?

I'm curious as to what will happen too? IF there's not enough people to get the hotel how we had planned, what will happen? Will we just have to pay a little more or what?

Michelle, book with bella for the days of the G2G and the extra day on your own. You might have to change rooms to get to the PTO blocked rooms tho. You will save money this way!

I did this years ago and paid the rack price for one day and the group rate for the rest.

It's not the cost for me. This cost is cheap! The problem for me is getting away from work. The college is not on spring break then and I have to cancel classes whenever I'm not there to teach them and I travel some for work as it is. If it was during spring break---I would be there.

I'm used to paying at least $170 per night for a place like this sounds like.

I do hope you guys post pictures and I sure wish I was going to be able to be there...

Well, so far I haven't seen any "guys" wanting to share a room or share a ride. A bed is available and a ride anywhere in route.

I'm hoping to get on a visiting list and make this trip dule purpose by making a stop in Dickison, TX Nothing is set in stone as of yet tho.

If for some reason, I can't make the trip, there will be a room available, paid for. One never knows what tomorrow will bring and the older we get, the more uncertain tomorrow is

Yep, you can send it to me...just keep in mind that if you send it and they don't it could cause a poblem once the room is reserved the $ will be owed. So try to make sure you all send it around the same time.

I have ONE bed available, since it's already paid for. It's just I haven't seen any "guys" looking.

I would appreciate some sort of schedule. I have other plans that weekend but will be down that way in Hempstead (Peckerwood Gardens and Yucca DO) and Brenham (ANtique Rose Emporium) for a garden club event. I thought if I knew when a speaker would be scheduled I might be able to pop in for a little while.

Also for those that might get bored hanging out in the hotel, I don't know but I wonder how your going to fill in, let's say for an example 7:00am -10:00 pm with PTO events for three days, you might look into the sites around the Houston area. Especially those that have traveled a way. YOu must see something in TEXAS besides ugly old Houston.

It would be helpful to know how many rooms have to be paid for to get the Hotel package.

There might be a room of 4 that would be willing to slit off in two's and pickup another room?

From the questions being asked, apparently people need more information in determining if this is a 2 day conference or basically a get-2-gether. There's a big difference between the two activities and both terms have been used in reguards to this PTO meeting.

If I remember right, the cut off date to book a room is Feb 15th and that's only 4 more days.

As of right now we seem to be ok. I am waiting to hear back form the hotel liason...I guess once I see the final contract we'll know for sure...I'll let you all know but the girl from the hotel seems great ans willing to work with us. There are a lot less rooms booked than I intially planed but as I said she seemed willing to work with us....

I will be doing documentary interviews on Saturday at the hotel, all during the festivities. Thank you to those who have responded to my PMs (not PMS he he) about this. I have room for ONLY SIX MORE people and my day will be booked. I kinda like the number I have right now but I can take up to 6 more people. As soon as I get the final count, I will make up a list of times and names.

Well, I found out today that it is a 23 hour drive from Hickory, N. C. to Houston, Tx. MAN, That one is too much.... I have found some tickets tho for $175.00 but we will have to drive to Atlanta to get them..... That is not too bad. It is only a 3 1/2 hour drive. So, we are flying in after all.... will arrive on Friday....

Well Jody, or somebody, I will need driving directions.... I have tried purchasing tickets for air fare and the prices have gone up tremendously.... The lowest fare I can get is to drive to Atlanta and 1 ticket is $344.00.... I am not going to do that.... So...... Send me some directions from Charlotte, N. C. (Hickory) to JFK Blvd in Houston, Tx. (The shortest way possible. We will leave on Wed and spend 2 nights on the road. Then we will start back on Sunday at Noon.

Boy, I sure did not realize how much the airlines have gone up on their flights.

Thanks Donna, I printed out the directions. I'm a born and raised Houstonian. I moved to Dallas 10 years ago, so I can find my way around Houston pretty good. I got to wondering... If you and the balance of folks with cars, goats or shoes good enough to get there are all partying it up in TX this weekend.. WHO'll be minding the store?

What exactly is the chain of command around here?
Are you all going to have an online kiosk to send messages back here to those who can't come?

I think we'd all like to know who'll be sitting with us while you and mom and the neighbors go out to party.

I think it really would be nice to have emergency phone numbers (emails) on the refrigerator... and you might want to keep our number handy too--- In case you all have SUCH a good time there that you need to raise bail.

There will be super moderators and moderators on this weekend that will not be able to attend the conference. Also we will have some computers set up at the hotel and keep you all posted and updated. If there are any problems please PM David if you see that he is online. If not please PM any moderator that is present. Worst case senario, one of us will pop up here with in a few minutes...it never is longer than that with out one of us being here. also should anything major happen to the site, david is real close to home base to run there and reslove issues. Not a worry. Everything will be fine and like I said we will keep you all updated and informed as the conference goes along. Wish you could all be there! :(

I need to talk to any of you who have experience with voice chat such as Yahoo and others in case that is an option we need to peruse to bring the events at the conference live to you.
I do not have a lot of experience with Yahoo chat but I have visited a few voice chat rooms previously..
For those of you that are familiar with Yahoo chat, can we setup a semi-private chat room where it is "listening only" to the broadcast coming from the conference? I want to basically "key the mic" and let it stream to everyone in a room, but I don't want there to be any cutting in unless we chose to field questions and comments from the room.
Any info and tips are appreciated. Please respond in this thread.

It is with a dreadfully sorry heart I write this. Due to circumstances out of my control, I will not be able to make the PTO Conference this weekend. I have tried many many things in order to make it but at last I had to give in to the fact it's just not happening. I hope you understand and are still willing to be interveiwed at another time. Have a great time at the conference. I wish I could be there.

I have only used it once, Soul and I tried it out one evening. We didn't talk to long because we has some nasty squelch going on. That was thru AIM. I'm thinking that it was the quality of our microphones. Hopefully you will find some one to guide you and answer some of your questions.

David I don't know too much about all this tehcnical stuff but when I use to chat on Yahoo rather on messenger or chat rooms if you check on the hands free box then no one else can interfere with what you are saying...

David, I was an admin on pal talk. they have it set up to where yuo can chat either in the room or in PM. But you could not do both at the same time. It was pretty cool and the best chat rooms i ever been in.
to stop cutting in, they had bottons on there that allowed people to like raise their hands to take turns, then of course when people did not follow the rules, they were wanred y writing in the chat box, then kick,
they simply made up rules that others had to follow and that was one of them.

hands free was on pal talk as well and there ws hardly any interfernce with it. yahoo alwasy did for me,

They are in Houston and having fun prep'ing for the conference. Just so happens they got a room right smack in the middle of where I grew up... ;)

Though I won't be in Houston until later tonight, I am starting that move to the conference. Packing up the computer stuff and doing some final shopping.
Can't wait to meet everyone there and talk to many of you online from the conference!

well,i chat on yahoo quite a bit,if you dont wanna be "stepped on"....just key the mic....and dont release it....not hands free....just key it and keep it keyed.....as long as you dont release it,it'll make you the mic master:)

one thing i like about paltalk is when someone tryies to "step" on someone esle while chatting, we can take the key or mic away from them. we use to get so many that would come in just raising cane and it is a good tool to have.
