FriscoLady 03-15-2004, 03:38 AM Or how everything and anything you can find to worry about happens!
Ok, Linda and I are excited. We are really, really looking forward to the trip, the conference, and seeing Mom and Dad. We have our reservations, we have our directions and we are ready to go. So, what is the problem you say, why do you have the jitters?
Good question, I say! :D
Well, in all our planning and preparation, etc., etc., we forgot to have one very important item thoroughly checked out. Our car. (I say with embarrassment.)
Ok, first of all, being a bit old fashioned, I don't want to hear any of the men in the bunch, saying things like. "It figures, just like a woman!" Got that from my ex husband already! Only, he said just like Patti! :argh
Saturday morning, Linda and I are doing the proper thing and getting the oil changed and a lube on our sweet car "Daisy Jane"! Oh, ok so I named my car!
As we come out of the shop, Linda happens to look at the right front tire. After a moment of groaning, immediately followed by "D#@@it to somewhere", she says Patti come look at this. (Yes, Linda cusses, but you should hear me sometimes, come to think of it you will in a sec).
I walk around the car, and much to my chigrine, the rubber is separating from the steel belt. Ok, now Patti cusses, "Well H@ll!" (No that is not the best I can do, I won't repeat what else I said).
So, back in the shop to get tires, which they don't sell. Off to another shop, tires are too expensive, off too another shop, the line is too long and they don't want anymore work. So, finally, third shop, purchase new front tires. I think, oh good we are done. Wrong!
As I am sitting there, the mechanic comes up an says I want to show you something. Actually, what he is thinking is, Ah, I have someone who knows squat about cars, let me see what I can take her for! Unfortunately, in most mechanical cases he is right. But, not this time!
He says I need new brake pads, changed those myself in the past, and yes they are worn, but passable. He says that they have to be changed right now. By that time my patience is gone, flown out the window! So, I call Linda and show her the pads, then we both say, put the new tires on and we will decide when to change the pads. Course he pushed it further, I won't repeat what we said.
But, since we have lifetime warranty on this set of brake pads I am having them replaced today. God help the mechanic that trys to tell me that the rotors are groved and ruined. I don't think so! :pissed:
So, this morning, we are three days behind in our trip preparations, which if you know Linda and I that is standard operating procedure.
I started this out, does anyone else have pre-travel to the conference jitters?
Everyone have a safe trip and see you there!
Patti
samiam158 03-15-2004, 04:44 AM haha...my jitters are just trying to find the motel..everytime i go to orlando i get lost...the directions to the hotel may seem simple to most but to me its foreign...i always wind up at wet and wild no matter where i'm suppose to be going...lol..last year when i went to atlanta to pick up my son i got lost outside of downtown 3 times...finally the motel clerk kept me on the phone and talked me there...so i am terrible at directions..and orlando is a busy place...but maybe i won't get lost this time...hahaha
Hilde Bogaerts 03-15-2004, 06:03 AM ooohhhh patti, thanks for making me laugh today my friend!!! I know it is not funny and me, being a single mother with an old car...know excactly what you are talking about...they always seem to think...'oh it's a woman, we will get money out of this and make her feel stupid at the same time'...well not with this woman!!! YOu aer just too much Patti...please, for some one who can not be there...please please, tell me evrything like you did just now...i want to know it all!!! even these things!!! so I will be checking this thread from now on to see how you are doing....!!! you are a very good writer and I love every word! so tell me more!
FriscoLady 03-15-2004, 09:24 AM Sam,
Everybody gets lost in Orlando, so don't feel so bad! I heard once the Mayor got lost just going from his home to the City Offices, they found him in Miami! LOL! Just kidding!
But, everytime I have been to Orlando I get lost! As for Atlanta, just try the airport down there sometime that place is as big as Alaska! (I would have said Texas, but Alaska is bigger, sorry David! I say meekly. :D)
Hilde,
I will be happy to keep you up to date, I hope I have some access to a computer at the conference, but after my last comment about Texas, David may not let me near one! ;) If I don't I will fill you and everyone in on Linda's and my escapades upon our return on the 25th.
Anyway, when I got to the brake shop this morning the mechanic did exactly what I predicted, he said I needed new rotors as well as brake pads.
I said show me, we went out to the car and he said that he could not grind them because if he ground them they would be under the legal limit on drums of .850.
I said oh really, so you have to replace them? He said yes because - and repeated himself again.
I said ok, I do feel some groves when I run my finger over the drums, but that is ok, judging by what I feel I will get some squeaking, squeaking don't bother me, if you have ever had children, any type of squeaking don't bother you. Oh and incidentally, I was born at night but it was not last night. You said the legal limit on drums in this state was .0850, ah, honey, I think you better take up needle point for a profession, if that is what you think, the legal limit here is .750. So go figure, put the d@mn pads on and write the bill and I will go away so you can start learning needle point!
You should have seen his face! :)
If my ex husband taught me anything at all, it was some mechanics and to go to an auto shop prepared for anything!
Patti
Hilde Bogaerts 03-15-2004, 12:01 PM and who dear Patti, taught you to talk the way you do!!! Girl you should write a book!!! you better keep me update!! I am looking forward to this now!!!...hope you and Linda have a GREAT time!!! I have a friend from ALaska...he will love you for your kind words...they all know Alaska is bigger!!!
so keep those insights and fun stuff comming!!!....I just love you!!
Slainte 03-15-2004, 12:01 PM LOL at Patti! Mechanics always provide me with a good laugh! As a teenager I spent a lot of time with family friends... Jay, who was in his mid-30s at the time was a car nut, taught me all the basics of maintenance and how a car works. He thought it was important for women to know this stuff in case of emergency or breakdown. Well, his teaching paid off the day a mechanic told me that my "muffler bearing" was shot. Yes, he really said that. I looked at him, smiled politely, told him I wasn't as blonde as I look and told him to stuff the muffler bearing where the sun don't shine! :D
As for travel jitters... I'm only panicking over a potential snowstorm. Flying in bad weather doesn't bother me, it's just the possible inconvenience of flight delays in Boston and NY. Hopefully all will go smoothly!
Drive safely and I'll see you there!
Jess
FriscoLady 03-15-2004, 12:39 PM Jess,
That storm won't get in your way! It will just slide on by seaward of you. It is supposed to hit here tonight, but be all rain, of course, just when we are pulling out, but my car needs to be washed anyway. You be safe on the way to the airport and the flight will be fine. Safe Trip, girl.
You know too bad there is no such thing as a muffler bearing, that would've hurt, and been interesting to watch! LOL!
You, got it Hilde, I will post as much as I can, but I gotta watch the Alaska comments. My best friend is from the Matanuska Valley in Alaska and she is married to a Texan, boy is that an interesting relationship! Anyway, I will post away!
Hugs,
Patti
mrsdragoness 03-15-2004, 02:15 PM Patti... my laptop will be available at the conference!!
I'm a MESS... I leave my house in 24 hours to go to my daughters then from there we will leave at 5 am Wednesday am to go to the airport in Flint (MI). NOTHING is packed. I'm not even sure WHAT I'm bringing for clothing. I've gone shopping twice and can't find what I want.. shorts are either toooo long or toooo short.
The Suitcases are laying on the couch with "things" in them that I've added as I come across them. I have my list SOMEWHERE.. :)
I FINALLY got the things for the chinese auction done - my patients did a lot of the work. They really enjoyed making the greeting cards!! The jewelry pieces are done - excep a few clasps - those are my daughters job..
The house looks like a cyclone struck it.... I told my daughter that I hid money all over the house so she will clean when she comes up to take care of her kitties :)
I'm SURE glad I went to see Mr. D yesterday because they did surgery on a cyst on his head today and can't have visits. I'm a little disappointed, but I have a feeling he would have been kind of depressed today - he hates it when I go someplace special - because HE can't be with me....
I have to work tonight... so SOMETIME in the next 24 hours - minus the 9 I'm at work, I have to sleep, pack, make sure I have everything in order and get out the door!
I'll do it, I'll do it :)
Mrs
samiam158 03-15-2004, 02:49 PM WWWWOOOOOHOOOO
dont care if i get lost...ya'll send out a search party for me...be sure to check where wet and wild is on the map...lol...in a post i wrote the other day...hey..if any of you are coming beach side(cocoa beach) let me know..my home is open and i'm only 5 mins. away...maybe lunch  ???
Phil in Paris 03-15-2004, 03:23 PM Well, my flight takes off in 37 hours, and I hope AA did all the checking on the Boeing 767. I can't change a tyre on a 767 !! :D
I'm at work now and will be for the next 8 hours. I will be working tomorrow night too, for 12 hours. And I'll leave my apartment 3 hours prior to take off due to increased security checks after what happened in Madrid last thursday.
So, 37, minus 8 minus 12 minus 3 is 14. Well, during these 14 hours, I must, try to sleep, find my passport which is, I hope, in one of my jackets pocket, but don't know exactly which one, make up my mind about what clothes I bring (for the moment I need 4 or 5 trunks !! :D), iron those clothes, wash dry and iron some of them, find my sunglasses, remember to take my driver license off my car and put it in my luggage, buy suntan oil, etc etc...
Phil
Hilde Bogaerts 03-15-2004, 03:41 PM OOOHHHHHHHHH Phil I am soooooooo excited for you!!!! I can't wait for you to tell me how it was to see JOEY for the first time.....I can't wait!!!

FriscoLady 03-15-2004, 09:44 PM Well, just over an hour till we are up and on the road. Linda decided to leave at 1:00 am. I am so excited I cannot sleep. Patti
Lysbeth 03-16-2004, 10:51 PM Well, now I've bitten by the travel-jitterbug, I'm right in the middle of this madness now trying to get ready to be ready to be gone!!!!!! My flight leaves here at 5 a.m. Thursday morning so I am really wanting to have MOST everything organized so it won't be such a hassle in the middle of the night before I leave!!!!
Here's a question (as I start driving myself insane trying to do laundry)... what's everyone taking to wear??? The weather should be beautiful - right now there's NO rain in the forecast and it's all 70's in the day, 50's at night. Is anyone taking "dressier" stuff or just going mostly casual? I'm going to be sort of dressed up for the flight down but can't decide whether to do the jeans-&-t-shirt thing the rest of the weekend, bring my one very Florida-ey dress, what... sigh... maybe I'll just say to heck with it and bring it all.
If I make it on that plane intact and not insane it will be a miracle, sigh.... but looking SOOOOOOO forward to seeing you guys! :D
L.
JamesGirl 03-18-2004, 09:08 AM OK, You guys have me in tears!! Good, Happy, Laughing Too Hard Tears, but I'm feeling for you guys! Sam, I sure hope you don't curse me by me getting lost and ending up at Wet n Wild! I am a 45 minute or so drive from the destination(hotel) and have never managed to get lost in that particular area. I predict it it now, I will get lost!! But , I pray I don't! See Ya All Soon! Yvonne
mrskendrick2you 03-18-2004, 11:01 AM I can't wait! I can't wait! I can't wait!! Just wait until tonight... the travel and packing madness will definitely hit me!! See you all tomorrow!!
mrsdragoness 03-21-2004, 08:35 PM I wanted to let everyone know that I was HAPPY to hand David $320 from the Chinese Auction. LOTS of members both donated items and bought tickets. I'll include a list of contributors when I get home in a few days, but I wanted to share the news.
These types of "causes" are what will continue to make PTO a FREE site!!!!
Thanks everyone who participated in the Auction - Including Gentle Path Press who donated several items from their publishing house and Bust A Move, a PTO sponsor for donating gift certificates!!!
mrs

BryansGRRL 03-23-2004, 01:23 PM I'm waaaaaaaaaaaaaay out of the 'loop' no idea what a "chinese" auction is:hmm:
Phil in Paris 03-23-2004, 01:28 PM Yay bravo Mrs D, you're great !!! :)
I know what I'll do with the California wine I got at the auction. What I'm not sure is about these BBQ sauce.
Since I CAN'T cook, my roomy is asking for recipes for this sauce :)
Phil
Lysbeth 03-23-2004, 05:31 PM I'm waaaaaaaaaaaaaay out of the 'loop' no idea what a "chinese" auction is:hmm:
OK, let's see if I can explain it. People who came and also some others (like the Bust the Move company) donated items for the auction... like I donated four sets of BBQ sauces & dry rub from two of Memphis' most famous BBQ joints.
So all the items were set up with cups in front of them. You bought tickets for the auction at 3 tickets for $1. Then you wrote your name on the back of the ticket. Then you took however many tickets you bought and put them in the cups of whatever item(s) you hoped to win.
At the end of the auction, a ticket is drawn from each cup and that person wins the item.
Hope I explained it well enough and didn't make it more complicated... ;)
Lysbeth 03-23-2004, 05:39 PM I know what I'll do with the California wine I got at the auction. What I'm not sure is about these BBQ sauce.
Since I CAN'T cook, my roomy is asking for recipes for this sauce :)
Well, sweetheart, you don't really make things by recipe for BBQ sauce. It's mostly meant for slathering on a slab of pork ribs (the sauce) - which are called "wet ribs" down here - and the dry rub is for shaking on (also) a slab of pork ribs (that would be "dry ribs", of course). You could also use the sauce for pulled pork shoulder... those are the main uses for BBQ sauce & dry rub!!! (Although some of those weird Texans and some Northerners eat BBQ beef... ahhhhhhh not the same!!!!)
Tell you what, have him check out these sites (they're the sites for the restaurants the sauces & rub came from):
http://www.corkysbbq.com/
http://www.hogsfly.com/
That should kinda give him an idea of what to do with it. Also maybe do a Google search for "Memphis BBQ recipes" or "Memphis barbecue recipes" - that should bring up some stuff they're intended for.
Both places also make great BBQ nachos - nacho chips and cheese, topped with cooked pulled pork and some sauce (and some dry rub shaken over it if it's Corky's)... tres yummy!!
Lysbeth 03-23-2004, 05:40 PM Oh! You can also barbecue chicken, Phil!! Tell him just like grilling chicken, except slather it with the sauce first!!!!
Phil in Paris 03-23-2004, 06:00 PM Yum !!!! Well, I thought it was for beef....... So good I asked you first !!! I could have been mistaken for a weird Texan or a Northerner !!! :D
I'm gonna have my roomy BBQ pork this week-end :)
Thank you Lynn !!!!
Phil
Lysbeth 03-23-2004, 06:11 PM Those Texans and Yankees and Midwesterners will tell you BBQ beef is sooo good but it just is NOT right!! Ask Danielle, she will agree!! There's nothing better than a big ol' greasy slab of pork ribs dripping with sauce!!
BTW when I go to Corky's I actually get the dry ribs (covered in the dry rub) and then squeeze a little BBQ sauce on 'em as I eat. The wet are too wet and the dry are too dry but this way is just right for moi! :D
Can't wait to hear how it turns out when your roomy cooks with it - y'all enjoy! :)
TxRenee 03-23-2004, 09:52 PM ROFL Beth... WAIT A OL Southern Minute!! My all time FAV is BBQ Pork RIBS, Baked beans and Macaroni Salad!! :) Yummmmm Yummmmmmm
Nothing better then BBQ Pork!!! :) its the "other" white meat :)
Phil ENJOY!!!
danielle 03-23-2004, 09:57 PM Glad the auction went well!
Mmm....gonna have to go to Memphis to get some BBQ now.
Thanks a lot Phil and Lys!!
bella 03-23-2004, 10:26 PM I want to personally thank Sally for this WONDERFUL idea and all the time and efforts she spent getting the donations for the auction. She mentioned a few other GREAT ideas for future fund raisers both at the next conference and others that will run through the years. I'll let her explain the details when she works them out but again I'd like to thank you personally for comming up with this GREAT idea!!!
Trulykath 03-24-2004, 08:51 AM on the BBQ issue, those weirdos in the Northeast also put cole slaw on their "pulled pork sandwiches".....NOW WHO"S WEIDER??? LOL :)
Phil, it's wonderful on beef (brisket) or baste it on chicken you are grilling or baking. It's incredible on pork ribs......the more you get on you, the more there is for others to lick off!! ;) Let us know how it turns out.....
Sounds like the auction was LOTS OF FUN!!!
kath
Slainte 03-24-2004, 10:40 AM on the BBQ issue, those weirdos in the Northeast also put cole slaw on their "pulled pork sandwiches".....NOW WHO"S WEIDER??? LOL :)
Ahem... even though I am in the Northeast... Boston to be exact... I have NEVER, EVER, put cole slaw ON a sandwich of any type! :D
And BBQ sauce is best on chicken or ribs... :) The more the better!
TxRenee 03-24-2004, 12:03 PM Cole Slaw on a sandwich? OMG!! Tell me it aint so!! LOL
Trulykath 03-24-2004, 12:39 PM ok....I stand corrected....let's just southeast LOL....(Virginia, to be exact)LOL....you shoulda see me look at the lady when she asked me if I wanted slaw on my sandwich....LOL...

Lysbeth 03-24-2004, 08:23 PM ok....I stand corrected....let's just southeast LOL....(Virginia, to be exact)LOL....you shoulda see me look at the lady when she asked me if I wanted slaw on my sandwich....LOL...
Yeah, I was gonna say, cole slaw on BBQ sandwiches is just a Southern thing, I think. I don't like it but most places you have the choice of putting slaw on it or not... I don't like cole slaw period so I defer.
danielle 03-25-2004, 09:28 AM I ALWAYS put cole slaw on my BBQ sanwiches.
LOL ... Hey! I'm a Southern girl to the bone!
Lysbeth 03-25-2004, 08:04 PM PS I won a lovely coffee mug from Paris (wonder who brought THAT?!) and a gorgeous jewelry set donated by Dragon Creations in the Chinese auction... :p
B-Ray 03-25-2004, 08:15 PM Phil, don't knock the "beef" until you try it!! Dem Southerners don't know how make a pot of beans either!! :p
I'm glad you enjoyed the California wine! :)
Yum !!!! Well, I thought it was for beef....... So good I asked you first !!! I could have been mistaken for a weird Texan or a Northerner !!! :D

~cheenna~ 04-03-2004, 02:21 PM Don't no body forget the potato salad ... Phil, you DO know what that is don't ya?
Actually, any kind of meat is better with THE SAUCE on it ... it's the disagreement of WHAT sauce that muddies the waters! :D
When I throw a BBQ there is a big variety of meats, sausage, pork and beef, chicken, steaks (you can take a really cheap cut and turn it into fillet Mignon) deer (if I still have any left from previous season:D) and ribs, I prefer beef ribs but usually do the pork and of course, the all American Beef Brisket! And if I'm really going out, I'll do up a ham, too.
I love slaw too but, I'll have mine on the side please! ewww, on a sandwich? :(
Dang, getting to be mighty close to that time of year here in TX ... need to find the #3 wash tub, clean it up and get it ready to fill with salted ice and beer :D
excuse me now while I go fix something to eat, my stomach thinks someone done slit my throat!
mrsdragoness 11-20-2004, 08:33 PM We will be having another Chinese Auction at the conference!!!
WHAT is a Chinese Auction???
All items to be auctioned off will be on display along with a "bucket" to place your "bid" into. You will purchase tickets and place them in the bucket of the prize(s) you want to win.
WHERE will the prizes come from?
From Member/Sponsor Donations - Last year members brought regional gifts from all over the World. We had Tennessee BBQ sauce, California Wines, gifts from France, a gift certificate for New England Seafood etc.
In addition we had movie tickets, Avon products, jewelry, handmade cards, books, hand made craft items, lots and lots of things. Sponsors donated a copy of their books, gift certificates, etc.
What happens to the money donated?
The money will be given to Fed-X to be used for future PTO projects, etc.
How do I donate something for the auction?
Bring your item to the conference with you OR if you can't make the conference and have something to donate, contact me and I'll make arrangements for it to be at the conference.
Do I need to notify anyone that I'm bringing something?
Yes, Please let me (mrsdragon) know what you are donating so I can be prepared for how many items we will have. I was totally unprepared for the amount of wonderful donations at the 2004 conference. I'd like to be better prepared next time ;)
Slainte 11-20-2004, 08:54 PM Will definitely be donating something "Bostonian"... will let you know what it is when I do! :D
