Westmorland Institution:
Ø Visitors must be approved before visiting.
Ø You only have to be approved once federally every 2 years. Not when inmate changes institutions.
Ø Inmates are allowed 1 visit a week.
Ø All visits are contact
Ø Weekday visiting hours are 6-9pm
Ø Weekend visiting hours are 9-1145am, 1215-445pm, 515-9pm.
Ø You can only visit for one time slot on weekends.
Ø You must call no more than 7 days, no less than 24 hours before visit to be put on list.
Ø If you are coming from out of town or taking the bus in they will usually put you down for the evening slot if you ask when you get there.
Ø There is an x-ray machine there to check anything you may bring in with you but it was not used when I went there so I believe it is random.
Ø There is also an ION scanner but it was not used when I was there.
Ø I’m not sure about specifics of what you can’t bring because I had a backpack full of stuff and my purse and neither were so much as opened to look inside them. I brought in my phone, money, clothes magazines etc.
Ø You can bring in food and smokes. The inmate can bring smokes back with them but not food.
Ø Food can either be take out or homemade but you bring your own cutlery (must be disposable)
Ø You cannot bring drinks in because there are vending machines with drinks in there.
Ø There are microwaves if you need them.
Ø There is an outdoor area, you can come and go as you please.
Ø There is a children’s area with a tv/vcr. You can bring in things for a child. Milk, bottles, toys etc. There are no toys in the play area. Only an empty toy box.
Ø Guards are scarce there. The only one I saw was when I went in and when I left.
Ø There is only 1 camera and it is outside.
Ø The guards can watch the inside area through a 2 way mirror but cannot see outside.
Ø You cannot have pictures taken
Ø Rules are pretty slack when it comes to contact. We were getting pretty heavy outside and never heard a peep from a guard.
Ø Visiting room is never overbooked so you always get your full visit.
When it comes to dressing I would say just use common sense. Don’t risk it unless you bring an extra change of clothes.
Ø No strapless shirts
Ø No see through clothing
Ø Skirts/shorts must be no more than 2 inches above the knee
Ø No “gang” symbols
Ø No “drug” symbols
Ø No otherwise offensive clothing
Ø No bra showing
Ø Flip flops are permitted
