Dorchester Penitentiary
Ø Visitors must be approved before visitng.
Ø Normally this can be done within 2 months
Ø You must call no more than 7 days, no less than 24 hours before visit to be put on list.
Ø Inmates are allowed 1 visit a week
Ø Visits are contact unless inmate is in the hole or contact visits are taken away.
Ø Visiting hours are daily 9-11am and 1-345pm. You are allowed to come to both time slots. The only days you cannot visit is Tuesday and Fridays.
Ø Must pass through metal detector and wand before entering. They also have ION scanner sometimes and once had the drug dog.
Ø You can bring in money for the inmate which is given to guards in visiting room.
Ø Only other thing you can bring in is a key to your locker, change for vending machines ($10 change per visitor ~ max of 3 visitors) and you can wear in your wedding/engagement rings.
Ø There is a children’s area with a picnic table and toys etc.
Ø You cannot bring in anything for baby. No bottle with milk, juice, snacks , nothing.
Ø Rules state you can only kiss and hug at the beginning and end of your visit but my experience is they are pretty slack as long as you are respectful.
Ø There are cards and board games behind the desk you help yourself to.
Ø You can go to vending machines downstairs as you please. Bathroom is downstairs also.
Ø There is no smoking and no outdoor area.
Ø You can have pictures taken but inmate must purchase ticket at canteen beforehand.
Ø Visiting room is never overbooked so you will always get your full visit.
