My mother is in Carswell FMC and was placed there Oct 24th. I was told she was placed there because of her Diabetes and the # of Medications she takes. I have looked in to this and discovered that she could receive her insulin and meds at a regular prison camp. She is a Level I offender and she is currently placed in a facility with mostly violent offenders. She is receiving practically zero medical attention and I feel that if they sent her there for medical treatment they are doing an absolutely terrible job. I have read so many terrible things about Carswell, and I had been told by our attorney that it was one of the most sought after medical facilities. My mother is scared to go outside and scared to go outside of her area. This can't be good for her. We live in Illinois so she is over 13 hours from home. Needless to say, we can not go visit. I would like to see her transfered to Greenville, but it seems that she is not getting any help. Does anyone know what I need to do to try for a transfer. How do I contact her case worker, Warden, or anyone at all for that matter. Could Anyone Help??????

There is a procedure for a transfer. Generally, however a transfer for convenience requires that the inmate have 18 months with clear conduct prior to requesting the transfer. However, there are other limited circumstances where transfers are granted in less than the 18 months.

My brother also tried to get transfered (different reasons) and what she would have to do, is get the paper work from her case manager and request a transfer. The BOP is terrible about this (my brother was never granted his transfer) but they say if she is more than 500 flight miles away from home then she should be granted a transfer to be closer to family. If it is a 13 hour drive for you than she's definatley more than 500 flight miles away. As far as the medical treatment, that may hinder her request but it's worth a try.

I have a friend there now that told me about a woman like your mother. She said they wont test her blood. I think they may be friends or bunkmates. My friend sent form letters to us to petition the judge and probation office for a transfer. From what I am hearing and reading, there is a huge problem there at Carswell. My friend may not walk out as she walked in. Her diagnoses of PLS and refusal to medication is causing further damage to her nerological system. We have started the letter writing but the letters are falling on deaf ears so far. If you want copies of these letters, let me know.
