Inmate Movement
Lewis and Clark County Sheriff Cheryl Liedle is doubtful that moving inmates to other states would ease the states overcrowding problem. The county jail in Helena is paid to hold inmates that would be in state prisons, if there was room. Liedle says the jail relies on the money, but also needs the space those state inmates occupy. There are currently 176 inmates waiting for placement into county jails and officials say that if the number rises to 250 or 300, sending criminals to other states will be necessary. Sheriff Liedle says the department is cutting spending in other areas in their budget and putting it aside for future use to either expand or build a new detention center to cope with overcrowding.
