My man has been in there since the last week of September. I do not know if he will do all of his time there or what. His release date is 4/2007.

My son has been there since August 05, cascade yard. his release date is July 2008. I think he is trying for fire camp. He does not qualify for the half time or 35% though. Im not sure if he will spend his time there. I wonder why so many get transferred all over Ca? Susanville isnt too far from me, only about 2 hours so I feel very fortunate. From what I understand there are a lot of Shasta County guys at ccc. Thanks for starting this thread. Do you have very far to drive to visit? Laura

my man is in the process of getting transferred to ccc. His release date is 2/07. How often do you get to talk to your man over the phone?

My man was there from the beginning of August 2005, as of last week he finally got sent to camp in Nevada City, CA. His relese date is 10/2007. The phone situation really sucks! Well at least from my experience. He got to actually use the phone probably 5 times total, considering he signed up probably about 10 times but due to lockdowns, FFTraining etc.., he was unable to call the rest of the times.

My son calls me about twice a week. Sometimes he forgets what time he signed up for and he misses his call. Sometimes we talk for 15 min. Sometimes less. Sometimes we hang up and he calls right back so we can talk longer. He works nights and sometimes sleeps through his call time. I guess pft's are this week. I hope he passes. We have 3 camps that I know of in our area, I just hope they dont send him to a fire camp a long ways away. h8t the w8t, Is your man from down south also? I wonder why they send guys so far away from home when there are plenty of prisons down there I would imagine. I only know of two fire training places. Jamestown and ccc. Have a nice day everyone! Yes my man is from So.Cal and I dont understand why them send him and others from So. Cal way the Hell up there. But now he is @ camp in Nevada city, only 8hours away from me now! Whoopee!(yeah right) But I wasnt expecting him to be close to home, since CCC fire training sends their graduates to Northern Ca. camps and Jamestown fire training sends theirs to Southern Ca. camps. I have been noticing a trend, my man and 4 other men, all from down south, each have done time twice before, they did fire camp there 2nd term close to home. Now each of them is doing or has done their 3rd term up north @"Susie's house" for training, and then to a Northern Cali fire camp. I think the CDC I trying to really teach them a lesson this time, ya know they had it made just being at camp for one and then being so close to their hometown their 2nd terms. "So now lets see how they like being far from home away from friends and family, lets make it harder on them so hopefully they wont return for a 4th term" I think that is the way CDC is looking @ it??? Maybe not? Who knows? Could be just a coincidence. These are all seperate cases, spanning from like 2002 til now. GOSH! I really need to get a life besides all this court, jail, prison, camp etc... B.S.!

I dont know if them being so far from home and loved ones will help them keep out but it sure sucks! for the family members. I read around here somewhere something about loved ones doing there own time. It really is true. Just in a different way. My son is in so its different than if my husband were in. My husband was in in the early 80's, we were not married but I waited and I had no life whatsoever. Just waiting on the phone and the mailman. Im not sure if I could of done it again. Im glad I didnt have to. Have you gone through this with him all 3 times? You must be very strong willed and faithful. Just remember to have a life outside the waiting. Else you will grow old and have lots of regrets about your life. From what I have read there are lots of places worse than ccc so I guess I have something to be thankful for. I just keep telling myself some moms and their sons have it way worse but then I remember my son wont be home till 2008 and he better be a good boy! Or else!

My son was sent there in Sept. of 2005. He was hoping for fire camp but is still waiting to see if they trust him (I guess). He gets out next Sept. He did a year in reception because of court. I dont know whats worse seeing him behind glass, but being able to do it often or seeing him in person and only being able to do it twice a year.
I was really hoping that they would keep him close, but you know that they dont make it easy on anyone. But maybe they shouldnt make it easy, I mean if they did than it might not make the impact that it should on the ones inside.
I love my son with all my heart, but if it take hardship on me or anyone he loves and he sees that hardship and knows that its him that has caused it than maybe that might give him a different view when he gets out. Maybe that might encourage him to keep the straight and narrow.
These are just my thoughts and I dont mean to offend anyone with them.

My husband was in fire camp in the late 60's. Then they just put you in one and you trainned on the job so to speak. They feed him alot of steaks and he got to go to town on visits. boy how times have changed.

Its nice to hear from other people who have loved ones in the same prison as I do. It kind of helps to know that I am not alone.

My boyfriend has been in susanville since july, and I miss him so much. He doesn't write me as much anymore and I'm not sure why. Yes I have wrote to him but I haven't heard from him still. I know his mother well, but I lost her number when my phone got broke. Does anyone know if they can buy phone cards there so he can call cell phones? I would like to go see him, but he has not sent me a visiting form. I was thinking about driving there anyway and get as close as I can without getting in trouble. Does anyone have a bullhorn?

My son has just been transferred from Wasco to CCC Susanville. When first transferred are they kept in reception? His address I got from CDC was JIM. Is anyone familiar with any of this? He just got there a few days ago so I was wondering how long until he can call, write or get a package. Can we send a package or do we have to go through a company? Can I send a money order and where to? You can tell this is our first time. He is trying out for fire camp but that sounds like it is hard to get into. He gets 1/2 time now and would be eligible for 35% then which means a lot to all of us. Any info anyone can give would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to PM me even. This is the greatest site finding someone who is in the same boat as me. Thank you so much.

Cecelia, You send the money order to the same address you send his letters to. Also I have never heard of JIM. Hopefully some one will come along with info on that because Im very curious what it is. The company I use to send packages to my son is union supply direct. Ive had very good results with them so far. He wont have to go to reception again and that is at HDSP anyway. It is also in Susanville. You can send stamps to him. The phone number for ccc is 530-257-2181. Hopefully he will call you soon and you can get some more info. My son has not called in 2 weeks so Im kind of worried about him. Actually Im always worried about him. Ive been waiting for so long to be approved to visit. I called the visiting # and they said they couldnt give me any info that only my son can, so I wish he would call!! Anyway welcome to pto. Laura

Dear Laura, Thanks so much for the info. Every little bit helps. I also received a message from another user that was quite informative. I got that JIM from a person I talked to at the prison when I was trying to get his address. He just got there late Thurs. so I haven't heard from him as yet. Maybe, it is the building that he is bunked in. I know that you are worried about your son. Don't we spend most of our life doing that? Maybe, he is having a hard time getting a phone time or maybe he called when you wern't home. I am afraid to leave in case he calls. I think we are doing hard time, also. Thanks for the welcome, Laura. This site is wonderful and I pray for all the loved ones.
Take care,

Does anyone have any info on transportation from Reno to Susanville and then from Susanville to CCC? We would probably fly into Reno and stay in Susanville. Other than renting a car, is there some type of reasonable transportation?

Cecelia70,

Here is a number you can call. It's to the local bus department here in Susanville and maybe they can give you some information. I am not sure they do have a van that goes to Reno but not sure if its for the elderly, students, etc that are local. I am sure they can help you though. Hope it helps. 530-252-RIDE (7433) Below is another place.

I don't know how you tell. I asked mine and he said "Cascade". Then I noticed on his last letter he had Cascade after his bunk address. You could probably call CCC and ask the one on duty for this info. Maybe, the mail room would know if you gave them his address. The number is 530-257-2181 Ext. 4187 for the mail room. I talked to someone in there the other day and she was really helpful. They open at 6am. I called early. Hope this helps.

Does anyone know what I can mail to CCC in Susanville. We just received a letter from him the other day. I mailed a money order. But was wondering what can I send to him. And how long has the visiting forms been taking to get approved? We are like 9 1/2 hours away, so I guess when we are approved, his son and I will visit once a month. I don't know what yard he is on by his letter.

I know that the only thing you can personally send him is 40 stamps. NO envelopes or paper. Tell him to look into quarterly packages which can be sent online through a vendor. I got my son sweats, thermals and shoes through there. He can ask about seeing a catalogue and if he is eligible to do this. We just sent our visitors passes in so I don't know how long it takes. I had heard 30 to 40 days. We live in Southern CA so visiting frequency is the same for us. Where are you from and how long has he been in CCC? I hope that this helped some. If you have any further questions, feel free to PM me. I am new at this, but learning more each day.

Thanks Cecelia. He has been there since this week. Our letter from him was today. I sent a $100 money order today. I assume you have to wait until a quarterly package to send the sweats and thermals? I am military and we live in ventura county in southern california, I will be leaving in Oct of this year. We have a 3yr old together so hopefully I can get enough visits in before we leave. The only thing he said in his letter is that it took him 9 1/2 hours to get there. And he was like two hours from where I am, so I guess it will take me about 11 1/2 hours to get there.

My husband is at CCC since July 2005. He is on the Sierra yard. The last time I went to visit was on 1/15. I thought the weather would be ok but I was shocked when I got to Truckee in the Sierra. It was very scary...needed chains and everything. Highway 395 into Susanville was pretty scary also...no snow but ice...... anyway My husband calls CCC Witch Mountain! I see why now!

MTLt
01-26-2006, 11:30 PM
Wow you needed chains. I guess I should purchase some before I go. I just sent my visitor's form, so I guess maybe about time I get my approval the weather will be better. How long did it take for your form to get approved.

Eowyn
01-27-2006, 08:33 AM
Depending on where you live, going 5 to Hwy 36 is not a bad option. (and does not take significantly more time). Chains are usually required at Mineral for 10 - 20 miles, but traffic is light, and the road's not too bad. But, yes, get chains if you will be driving. Also, the cable kind that you get at Wal-Mart are cheap and EASY:) to install (like 5 minutes).

BlessedLady35
01-27-2006, 02:15 PM
Yes...I needed chains goign up but not coming back. They popped off going up and messed the side of the car up and everything. I had a really difficult time getting them off....had to get help at gas station because there were no chain installers around to take them off. Now my car shakes also....it was pretty bad. But I got to see my husband. I think it would not be so bad if I had someone to ride with me and maybe a 4 wheel drive..I come from the bay area and it should only take about 4.5 hours each way....well it took 7....My visting form was already approved when he was at Quentin's reception center. SO I just went up there and it was in their computer.:)

MTLT,

You should buy chains and carry them with you at all times. I have them in my car because I always travel to the Bay Area or to San Luis Obispo and you never know about the weather here.

Sorry to hear that some of you had to put chains on. It's never any fun I know I have done it a trillion times it seems going from and coming to home. We have not had any snow valley floor level but as for the mountains they have had some.

It has been pretty cold here and windy. It is raining now and I'm sure it will turn to ice.

I will not drive in the bad weather on the Summit (I-80) I did a 360 last year coming from seeing my husband in San Luis Obispo in March and it snowed. It was horrible, at times you can not see.

Make sure you bring an emergency kit with you, extra food, blankets etc just in case you get stuck on the summit, if it gets to bad nobody will move, been through that experience before too, bring extra money with you in case they close your route down as well and you will have to spend the night in a hotel, done that as well. I have lived here for many years and just want to give you ladies a heads up, you never know what the weather will actually be, the weather people are not always right. They will say it will be clear tomorrow and it will snow.

Make sure you are safe and prepared. If you ever are down this way and an emergency happens feel free to PM me I am just a few minutes away from Reno and Susanville. I am inbetween the two. :)

For all of you good people that have loved ones stuck at "SUSIES HOUSE", I feel for you. In my dark years spent in the system {16} I had the displeasure of being sent there three separate times. Been on every yard, know all the ins and outs, so to speak. Traveling there this time of year can be scary, do your homework before you hit the road, CHP, AAA etc. I will try to check in everyday for any help, advise that I can pass along. Hang tough, you are dealing with a screwed up system. Good Luck to all and know that you have my respect for what I know you are going through.

Hello my son has just been moved to Susanville from Delano. I have not gotten to talk to my son since 11-15-05, when he was still in county jail. So I am on here today to try to get a little bit of a connection to him. I miss him so bad. I wake up nights with feelings of fear not knowing if he is okay. I have always had faith to pull me through, but this has crushed my heart and also my faith. I found out today they moved him there to be at firecamp. Is that a good thing?

wafflelady,

Don't worry! I am sure he is just fine. My husband has been there since July 05 and just found out he will be leaving for camp on Thursday. Unfortunatley, it is the camp right across the street Antelope(we were praying for closer to the Bay Area)but we feel so blessed that he is at least going to camp. We have been told that camp is much better, especially for the inmate and family that is trying to rebuild their lives. Once you get to CCC it can take a while for you to get to firecamp, because they take you through an extensive screening process, physical etc. and then you have to take a physical training class(PFT) and then a classroom class (FFT).PFT-Physical Fitness Training and FFT-Fire Fighters Training. You must pass tests in both of those classes. Then they place you at a camp.....for CCC the camps are in the Northern California area. For my husband this process took 7 months. it is difficult not knowing what is going to happen. I just say have faith and GOD's abilities, to do what he sees fit in his time. We just pray for that all the time. The winter months will be over soon, and when the weather is nice it is beautiful up there. If you have any questions, just let me know and I will do my best to answer them.

ROXYSMAN,

Glad that you made it through & you're clean & sober. Currently my son's father is at Susuanville & has been since September 2005. We've been writing, mainly for our son, but I have to be honest that I've enjoyed getting his letters & writing to him. Can you please tell me what it feels like to receive a letter from someone on the outside, even if the person you're getting a letter from isn't your biggest "fan"?? Do you say stuff in letters just to keep the letters coming or do you think it's true from the heart?? Do guys get advice in there on past relationships & what should be done now?? I'm so frickin curious on what's exactly going on in his head, even though I was part of his life when he was locked up 10yrs. ago, but it's different b/c of our son.

Yes that is a very good thing! Fire camp is good way to do time, been there myself. He just needs to stay away from the games at CCC, do his own program, wait until assigned to PFT, then FFT and he will then be assigned to a northern Ca. camp. You won't hear much from him during fire season, these guys do more than most of the general public realize, they bust their humps for one dollar an hour!!!!! Be prepared during fire season if you are on a visit, if his crew is on call and it is time to roll, then he will roll. But know that what he is doing is a very important and admirable. Tell him that you appreciate his efforts. Good Luck

I finally got 2 letters this week from my son! I have never been as happy as I was to get those letters! He also wrote and told me that there is a block on my phone. So, I am going to call MCI tomorrow from the number posted on one of your previous posts and have that block removed. I can't put a price on peace of mind, not knowing if a loved one is okay, or that they may be scared, hungry or feeling alone can kill a person. Thank you for your reassurance!

Thank you so much for your response! I am praying for everyone of you who have loved one's that are incarcerated. I had never had to deal with our "justice system" until my son turned 19 and went from being a senior in high school to doing dope. Wafflelady,

This is my first time dealing with a situation with a close loved one also. It is nothing like people told us it would be. It is a very horrible but life changing expierence for us. I think probaly the biggest reason why it is so hard is because we are both trying to do everything the right way...taking responsibilty, following rules etc.I have allways been a pretty much by the book type of person but now that my husband has made this drastic change for the better for himself, I find that it can be tough at times being the only one that is actually talking the talk and walking the walk in support of his efforts and what I believe in. So with that...any questions I can answer and any help I can provide....please feel free to ask.

Peace and Blessings!

Thanks so much, Malogrrl. I didn't know if they could call after dark. He usually calls during the day but didn't call today as he was supposed to. He usually is pretty punctual with his calls so thought maybe he would call tonight if he could. You never know what happens during the day to interfere with their schedule. He may have gotten one of those phones that don't work.

Yes, sorry to say that they are still on lockdown. Is your man in Cascade? Are you planning to go visit this weekend if lockdown is off.

My son is there. He has his ducat and is waiting for the lockdown to be over so he can start the Physical Fitness Testing for fire camp. He ask us to wait until he gets to fire camp to visit him. We would have to take a plane and two busses to get to CCC so he would rather we wait. He thinks that it will only be a month. Do you know what caused the lockdown and how long it will be. I guess they don't tell you that. Is your guy going to fire camp?

My husband called me on Friday all the lockdowns are off and apparently they were in place because of a fight that took place in the kitchen. My husband says that place is a joke they throw them on lockdown for any little reason, it used to be for serious stuff but now its for any little thing!

Thanks for answering my post. What yard is your husband in? I called earlier today and they told me that Cascade yard Whites and Southern Hispanics were on lockdown still. They would have to wait until tomorrow when the Warden came in to see if they would let them off. She said that it was really snowing and raining there and no training was going on. Brrrrrr

:help:  Hi! My husbands been at CCC Susanville since last fall. He has been approved to go to firecamp, special skills as a mechanic. He said his counselor told him he was on the waiting list to go to camp. Just how long does it take to get sent to camp? He's been waiting since the end of Dec. Anyone who knows anything about this I'd sure appreciate your help.
Thanks,
Cathie (imjustcat)

Hi Cathie,
I don't know too much about the schedule to answer your question. My son is just now testing to go to camp. My son said that if you go in as "special skills" it takes longer as you have to wait until there is a camp in need of your skills. I wish that I had more info. Things seem to move so slow and we are always waiting for the next step in something. My son got there in the beginning of Dec. and he has been waiting until now to do the Physical Fitness Training testing. They have had so many lockdowns recently that it has taken longer. Good luck to your husband and you.
God Bless,
Cecelia

I do not suggest that you use any other vendors. They (CCC) can be very picky on those types of things. Plus, B&N is very cheap as far as shipping and book prices go. I'm assuming you already read the CCC Guide (http://www.prisontalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=177369)? If you have not, you should. There is a lot of info about the prison and it's procedures in it.

And with the visiting. I guess it all depends on luck. Some people with felonies get in and others don't. My main reason for being denied was because me and my man were co-defendants. But send in your application anyway. It's worth a try! Good luck!

My man is in CCC, Cascade yard I believe. He's starting FF Training and has been in Susanville almost a year, and was at Delano before that. He's been gone over a year now. He still has a little less than 3 1/2 years left, but once he goes to camp, he'll be home sooner. But as of now, his release date is 10/06/2009. But I pray every night for him to come home sooner!!!

My husband recently transfered to Susanville from San Quentin (bay area) and the distance really sucks! But I'm going to leave it in God's hands and try for family visits, regular visits, etc. whenever I can.
