I have to vent and I'm hoping someone else can relate and maybe steer me in the right direction? My semester ends mid-December (not too far away) but I have a medical condition in which my Doctor excused me from work and school for the next three months. Needless to say I am very upset. I would be receiving my AA with the completion of these two courses. One of my Professors said I have to take an Incomplete because of Medical reasons and finish up next semester. I was hoping to complete this course Independently. I am really bummed out about this. Can I appeal this somewhere? Basically I will be home doing nothing for three months. I worked hard to get this far and it kills me that I may have to put my plans on hold. Any advice, info, ANYTHING would be GREATLY appreciated, Thanks!

Have you went to the Department Chair? What about the Dean for that school?
During my first time around, I had to visit the dean a few times for special permission and then I had to appeal to the Dept Chair in order to do independent study.
GOOD LUCK!

Both classes dock your grade based on attendance? I know I had some classes where I showed up on the first day (to get the syllabus), mid-term and final exam. That was it. Are you in a position where you can just submit assignments and then show up for the final? As you professor if they'll allow it. Then move up the food chain asking. Like a month until the term is over. Convince them to work with you.
Do you have an advisor? Talk with him/her. How are your grades? I suggest being ready to make a solid case for independent study. Try to think of all the possible arguments they may have against it and know your answer. Let them choose to be flexible....with a little push. :)
It is a setback. I'm sorry it is happening right when you can see the finish line. Maybe a little social engineering can fix it. :)

Ya know, I had some classes that didn't give a flip about attendance and others that, well, more than 3 absences resulted in a failing grade for the class, regardless of any other performance. Once it was disclosed in the syllabus, they considered it the gospel.
Any word from anyone yet? Anyone able to help??

What gets me with the English course is that a lot of the other students wouldn't come back after the break we were allowed. The Prof. took attendance as soon as class began so if anyone left, how would she know? I spoke with the Dean of Students who suggested I speak to the Professor AGAIN and then go to the Dept. Head. What gets me is I have been doing very well in this course - my midterm grade was an "A".
Thanks for the advice.

Hello all,
Just wanted to let you know that I harrassed my Professors via email until they finally agreed to allow me to complete the courses. The wind up was I had to complete the written tests and some essays. I don't have grades as of yet but I am relieved that I was able to finish. The Dean of Students really was not helpful at all - she referred me back to the Professors.
Thanks for all your input & support.

You did get to finish and that's the main thing. Now you can relax with your time off.
