May 30, 2003, 9:49 PM EDT
NEW YORK (AP) _ An inmate at Rikers Island stabbed another inmate to death Friday by a cellblock telephone bank, officials said.
City corrections officials were questioning two inmates and had recovered a 9-inch piece of sharpened metal at the scene, said department spokesman Tom Antenen said. No one had been arrested in the stabbing.
Two inmates began fighting at about 5 p.m. outside the telephone bank in a cellblock containing about 50 of the prison's 12,000 inmates, Antenen said.
The 35-year-old inmate was stabbed once in the chest and pronounced dead at Elmhurst Hospital Center, Antenen said. His name was being withheld until family could be notified.
The inmate had been serving a one-year sentence for petty larceny and was awaiting trial on another petty larceny count.
The death was the first homicide in the city jail system since 2001.
