View Full Version : Question about visitation
tony's girl 05-20-2002, 05:18 PM I have a question regarding visitation in general. My boyfriend is at Tyrrell Work farm in Columbia NC (as you know). It is a minimum security prison. This is the first time I have ever visited a prison at all. I was wondering what I could expect when I get there! Any info would be appreciated. He gets 2 hours for visitation. If anyone could let me know how the atmosphere will be, what I can expect, etc. I would appreciate it! Will we all have to sit together or will we have any privacy to talk? Thanks!
Shortie 05-20-2002, 07:48 PM i can say that you will always have a gurad present and it just depends on the facuilty too. You need to call the prison and get me questions answers.
danielle 05-20-2002, 09:21 PM Every facility is different. Like Shortie said, contact the facility and your boyfriend should be able to tell you what to expect as well. Good Luck!!!
sherri13 05-21-2002, 08:31 AM MINIMUM IS THE MOST LENIENT SO SHOULD BE A GOOD ATMOSPHERE-BUT DO CALLAND FIND OUT ALL THE SPECIFICS BEFORE YOU VISIT-EVRY PLACE IS REALLY DIFFERENT-SOME EVEN LET YOU BRING FOOD (CHICKEN, ETC) FROM THE OUTSIDE
CREAMYALMONDZ 05-21-2002, 08:39 AM Every prison is different, some you get contact visits and others it's on a phone between glass. Since it's a minimum security prison it will probably be contact. They have dress codes, so you can't wear anything skimpy ;-) and bring change for vending machines. Call the prison to see how it is and what their procedures are.
CARLAxoxoxTODD 05-21-2002, 09:21 AM Along with nothing skimpy, you most likely can't wear sweats, dresses or skirts above the knee or sleeveless shirts.
If there is time, you should have your boyfriend send you the visitation page from his orientation book. But also call!
I've even gotten on the weatherchannel.com website and checked the conditions for where Todd's at. Since visitation is outside, it's nice to be prepared with either a heavy or light jacket.
soraya 05-21-2002, 09:39 AM yes, I'd say take different kinds of clothes, if they want to make trouble about what you're wearing, that you can go and change.
CREAMYALMONDZ 05-22-2002, 08:44 AM Sunday when I went to see Steven wore a v-neck blouse and I had bent over to tie my shoe (this is during the search) and the guard's eyes got big and asked me to be careful and not to wear the blouse anymore. Talk about embarassing!
soraya 05-22-2002, 08:48 AM oops....well, guess it's a good thing they didn't make you change clothes immediatly.
tony's girl 05-23-2002, 12:17 PM They sure are picky aren't they? At least they still let you visit! I just called the prison and they said that you couldn't wear short shorts, or short dresses. They also said that if it was warm outside and not raining that I could bring in food and we could eat outside. I hope it will be nice because he said that he really wants some shrimp!
aprilcat 05-23-2002, 12:57 PM oh dear! @ almondz. at least they didn't make you leave! from what i understand, that happens!
love muffin 05-23-2002, 02:30 PM My Fiancee is in a NC Prison and I will tell you how it is there.
All NC prisons have different rules when it comes to what you can wear inside the prison, so until you find out what their particular's are just wear something conservative, no short shorts or short skirts, because they may send you back out. At a minimum you can usually sit together and hold hands, kiss at the beginning and kiss at the end of the visit. Alot depends upon the facility. The prison my Fiancee was at before was strict, but the one he is at now is not. You can even wear short shorts and mini skirts there.
You can call up there and ask them to send you the rules and regulations on visiting. It will not take you long to figure out what they will permit and what they won't. Be careful.
Good Luck
tony's girl 05-24-2002, 03:46 AM love muffin, I appreciate all the info! Hopefully it will be like that at Tyrrell as well! I will have to wait and see. Only two more days to go!

tony's girl 05-26-2002, 09:39 PM Well everyone...I had my visit today with my man! It was wonderful! My visit was from 2-4 today so I drove down yesterday and spent the night in a motel close by. I had never been there before so I didn't want to waste anytime trying to find the place! It took me a little over 4 hours to get there from my house. It's about 1 hour from Elizabeth City NC. It was in a nice quiet area. Anyway, I drove down the road to the camp yesterday and as I got close, I could see from a distance a group of guys playing basketball and lifting weights. All of the sudden, I see one of them waving his arms like crazy and then I realized it was TONY! I was so happy to even get to see him from a distance that tears of joy rolled down my face! We hadn't seen each other since February! I went back today for my real visit and got there in plenty of time like you all said so that I wouldn't waste any valuable time getting checked in. They are very liberal there...no real specific dress code. I saw girls wearing shorts, sleeveless shirts and capri pants. I didn't know what to expect so I wore jeans and a loose shirt just in case! It was nice outside so I stopped by a seafood restaurant and got him some shrimp and deviled crabs as he requested. Then I got to the picnic area and sat down and I heard them call his name over the loudspeaker to report to the visitation area...my heart starting pounding! I kept looking for him then all of the sudden, he came through the door. Tears started rolling down my face as he came towards me. We hugged and kissed like never before! We had a very nice visit. He was so sweet just holding my hand and talking to me about how he can't wait to get out of there so we can be together again! He has 97 more days to go (August 30 is projected release date). I can't wait! I plan on going back to visit in about 4 weeks and I am counting the days already. When it was time to go, we both cried and hugged and kissed again and I hated to leave and have to leave him there. That was the hardest part. But, what a wonderful feeling inside to have been able to touch and kiss him! Well, I just wanted to let you all know how it went. Hope you have a nice Memorial day!
vnvdvc 05-26-2002, 09:47 PM I can just picture what a good time you both had!! I'm so happy to hear all these great visits are happening for people. In fact, I bet you are still smiling!!!
tony's girl 05-26-2002, 09:50 PM Yes I still am! In fact, I cannot even go to sleep yet - I am still on cloud 9!!!
soraya 05-27-2002, 01:19 AM sounds like a great visit!!! I guess nothing can take the smile of your face right now :)
CARLAxoxoxTODD 05-27-2002, 09:33 AM The first contact visit is the greatest, isn't it? I am so glad you had a great visit.
I can relate when you said that you hated to leave & leave him there. That is definetly the hardest part.
Now you have something to look forward to the next 4 weeks! :)
Shortie 05-27-2002, 03:45 PM i AM SO GLAD THAT YOU HAD A GREAT VISIT. IT IS SO GREAT THAT HE SEEN YOU COMING I BET IT MAD HIM WANT THEM TO HURRY UP. KNOWING THAT YOU WERE THERE AND JUST WAITING.. THAT IS SUCH A GREAT THING WHEN YOU ARE SO CONNECTED THAT IN PLACE LIKE THAT THE ENVIORNMENT DOES NOT AFFECT YOUR VISIT.. :) THANKS FOR LETTING US KNOW.. ;)
sherri13 05-28-2002, 02:10 PM TONY-S GIRL-GLAD IT WAS A GREAT ONE!
Budwoman 05-28-2002, 02:41 PM SEE GIRL.... THESE VISITS ARE ABOUT THE BEST THING, ESPECIALLY IF YOU WENT TO A MINIMUM SEC UNIT.
YOU CAN TAKE A PICNIC TO MOST MINIMUM UNITS IN NORTH CAROLINA..... SIT OUTSIDE AT THE PICNIC TABLES AND HAVE LUNCH ETC. IT IS GREAT...
NONE OF THE OTHERS WILL LET YOU TAKE FOOD INSIDE....
GLAD YOUR VISIT WAS GOOD
ELIZABETH CITY IS A LONG WAY FOR US TO TRAVEL BUT I HAVE DONE ALMOST THAT FAR BEFORE. I HAD TO VISIT AT CALDONIA WHICH IS ON THE VIRGINIA LINE. IT IS A MAXIMUM SECURITY.
