A cite resource is at the end of the essay, on a separate page. You need this reference if you use it (cite) in your essay. I just got done writing an essay where I had to use it in the essay and have a works cited page at the end. I am assuming if you are required to have a reference at the end, you have to use it somewhere in your essay. Hope that helps! Good Luck!:D

Usually, cited references mean those that you quote in your paper/essay and then are included in the bibliography at the end. Sometimes you will include resources in your bibliography that you don't cite, simply because you just used it to cross check or to gain more info in general about a topic. An encyclopedia is a good example. You would read that article in the encyclopedia to get a better understanding of your topic, but you might not cite it at all in your paper.

Does that make sense?
