The Rest of Their Lives
Life without Parole for Child Offenders in the United States
http://hrw.org/reports/2005/us1005/
This is a new report released Oct 12 2005 by HRW.
Perhaps most important are the letters to policy-makers, who need to hear about this. And the photos on the report's cover are so moving.
I know these kinds reports can get depressing for some of us (me too) but they're really important for bringing about change. So, thumbsup to HRW.

hi. i just popped over, reading this for the first time. first, ladies, woah, this report... i'm totally appalled...
we consider anyone under the age of 18 to be too irresponsible and immature to make decisions about having sex, and victims when it comes to sex 'crimes'... but it's ok to treat them like they're adults and know what they're doing when it comes to committing a crime themselves? i really don't understand that mentality in this country.
if any of you have started petitions for your loved one in for life who was a juvenile when they went in, let me know, and i'll be quick to jump on signing it.

has anyone heard of the current efforts to change the law in california regarding juvenille lifers??
senator leland yee has introduced a bill SB 399. the first senate hearing being april 14th..
this could be the best chance at moment of juvenille laws being changed...

yeah it would affect all current lifers w/op who were sentenced as juveniles ... theres posts on other threads ( i think its the california news & events thread) regarding this with links to keep updated on bill..and a news article about it...
basically, it was approved by the committee, but apparently still needs to get a final approval from governor to pass.
if you want more info on the bill, pm me and i can email you what info i have.. or check out the human rights watch site.. http://www.hrw.org (http://www.hrw.org/)
or google info on it??? SB 399, the fair sentencing for youth act. it explains how it works etc...

"354 youth offenders nationwide currently face a lifetime behind bars for crimes they committed before their sixteenth birthdays. "
Wow, thanks for sharing that information. I knew it was bad, but those numbers really make you feel it. May they not give up hope.
