My son is in reception at Delano ll, the new Delano next to N.K.S.P. (Delano l). His ex cell mate use to call me. He had to make an appointment at the prison to call. My phone carrier was not compatable with theirs so I had to pre-pay with their carrier. I think the inmate can buy a phone card at the prison store, not sure.
Good luck.

Thank You For Responding So Fast! I Ask Because My Husband Is At Delano, Reception. He's Unable To Make Calls Right Now. But He's Seen His Councelor And Expects To Be Moved Soon.... I Dont Know If That Means To The Part Of Delano Where He Can Call (cuz Some Guys Serve There Time At Delano) Or To Where Ever They Send Him. (we Were Expecting Him To Go To Jamestown But We Found Out He Has High Blood Pressure. So Were Not Sure What The Heck Is Gonna Happen) Anyway.... He Wrote Me Today Telling Me He Is Going To Be Calling Me Sometime Soon. I Have Collect Calling Blocked On My Phone, It's Impossible To Remove!!! So I Do Prepay. Mci Does Delano. Their Process Is He Has To Attempt To Call, He'll Be Denied, 24 Hrs Later I Can Call And Set Up A Prepay Account. I Rather Someone, Any One At Delano That Can Make Calls - Do That. Call Me Collect So I Can Set It Up Now. That Way When My Husband Can Call, He'll Get Thru. I Haven't Talked To Him For Over 2 Months. I'm A Wreck! Everything Makes Me Cry!! I Want To Hear His Voice!! Can You Help?

Hey Piper, most likely he will get transferred someplace else after reception. But I think all the prisons use MCI...so just have anyone call you from a prison to start the process. You can also call the counselor yourself and find out approximately when and where he might be sent to.
And I know what you are going thru...my husband was at Delano-reception for 3 months..that was the longest 3 months of my life....You will make it! If I could make it, so can you!!! :)

Call the main prison # and ask for records and they will give you the counselor's name and ext. Everytime I have a question, the Records Dept. is the first office I call cause they seem to be very informative and I always get someone nice.

YES!!! I cried at everything and was extremely depressed!!! It was the worst time of my life while he was in reception..not hearing his voice and then the mail was so messed up. There was a time he thought I was gonna divorce him cause he hadn't gotten a letter from me in a month...when I was writing everyday! You will make it. Just remember, it is making your love stronger! :)

If no one else can help...send me a private message with your phone# and I'll have my husband or his cellie call from Avenal so you can get the process started-they use MCI.

Hang in there!!!

Okay, we need to confirm something here because this thread is confusing and full of inaccuracies. North Kern State Prison (Delano 1) is the older, smaller prison where reception is.

Kern Valley State Prison (Delano 2) is the newer, much larger L4 prison and there is NO RECEPTION at this prison. Tylersmom, your son must be at North Kern (Delano 1) if he is in reception. If he is in KVSP (Delano 2) he is either in Orientation or is on mainline now.

So PLPIPER, if your guy is in RECEPTION, meaning he came from County, then he is at NKSP or Delano 1. If he transferred from another prison, he is not in reception, he's in orientation and he could be at either prison since NKSP also has mainline, not just reception.

Next, MCI does NOT do prison calls anymore. Global Tel*Link does and you can set up a prepaid account with them. Inmates cannot buy phone cards in prison. They can only call collect.

I guess the first thing to do is determine exactly where your guy is. Just saying a guys is "In Delano" does not tell us which prison he is in. Both are completely separate prisons, different names, inmate populations, levels, wardens, visiting rules and procedures.

Reception inmates generally do not get phone calls until they see a counselor and are endorsed for a mainline or fire camp.

Hope this helps.

In order to receive calls on your cell phone, you must have your home phone (or whatever land line your guy is placing the collect call to) forwarded to your cell phone. This means you must subscribe to call fowarding through your land line provider. There is a code you dial to forward the calls -- usually *72 xxx-xxxx. The cell phone will ring and you must answer it to complete the connection. All incomming calls to the land line will now ring on the cell phone. To cancel it, usually you simply dial *73 on the land line.

Hope that helps!
