View Full Version : Student Loans....VENT!
Nuro's Wife 10-06-2005, 11:57 AM I am so frustrated with these student loan people. I recently completed an income sensitive payment request form stating that the most I can pay is $160 per month towards my loan based on my income & expenses. My response from them says that the least they can accept per month is $519! Yeah right! If I could afford to send then $519 a month then I would have just mailed the payment coupon back with a check. Why have an income sensitive payment request form if you are not going to approve the requests? UGH!!!
I am online now looking for a doctoral program to enter into ASAP. I will take classes forever if I have to...to avoid dealing with this kind of crap!
MrsBenji 10-06-2005, 04:03 PM GOOD FOR YOU!!!
Sometimes I debate about staying in school until I die, just so I don't ever have to pay it off.
And in reality, if they take you to court to garnish your wages, they take 10% of gross, so if they are smart, they will take the $160 a month and be glad. AND... from my understanding, as long as you are making some sort of payment, they can't claim you have defaulted completely, which makes it harder for them to garnish your wages. (Unless you are making big bucks, you might want to remind them that $519 is LESS than what they would get with garnishment AND they'd save the legal fees.)
I'm rambling. It sucks. And I'm sorry!

cheli chel 10-07-2005, 09:56 AM Don't bother with loans. you'll be in debt for the rest of your life. get on the web and look for scholarships you'll be surprise at the kind of sholarships that are available but the schools will not tell you about them you have to look into it yourself. they have scholarships for some of the craziest things you can imagine like for being a woman, for being hispanic, for being left handed and the list goes on. it takes some research but believe me their out there. i got a 1 year scholarship for being hispanic from an organization in new york of course one year does'nt cover my whole four years but it knocks one of my to do list and that alone is 10,000. each of my semesters is 4,975 i had gotten full financial aid for my first year and my scholarship for my second now im in the process of figuring out how to deal with the next two years.

Manzanita 10-08-2005, 05:29 PM I have tons of loans in forebearance, and deferment, I cannot eveb afford the bills I have and I am not in school. I wonder how I will ever pay them off when it comes time. I am trying to wait until next year and then I will try and consolidate them, but I am trying to figure out, how I can pay as least as possible. I cannot afford not even $100 a month :(
Nuro's Wife 10-08-2005, 10:20 PM Thanks Jenn for the support! I have appealed their decision so I am waiting now for a new response. I'll keep you all posted.

Nuro's Wife 10-08-2005, 10:22 PM I have used scholarships also. I am actively searching now for scholarships for my daughter. She is a junior in high school and wants to be a nurse. With the shortage of nurses there should be lots of free money out there to help her get her education.

MrsBenji 10-08-2005, 10:25 PM OH!... If she knows what area that she wants to stay in for a while, she may be able to contact a local hospital. I've had two cousins and a friend who've done that and there is an agreement made with the hospital that the hospital pays their tuition and they agree to work for them for so long. (One of them did have to start at $1 less an hour than normal, but after the first year, she was back up to normal wage rates.)
It's well worth it, at least I think it is.
GOOD LUCK finding things for her too!!

Nuro's Wife 10-08-2005, 10:26 PM I would love to suggest requesting an income sensitive repayment plan that is supposed to take into account your income and expenses and give you a lower payment; but that has not worked too well for me obviously (with this new lender); but I would give it a shot anyway because it has worked well for me in the past -- all of the lenders work differently -- maybe it will work out for you.

MonsterGirlsMom 10-16-2005, 03:44 PM okay you guys are scaring me! I just took out my first loan(s) this quarter...I decided to take out an extra loan just to have some extra money for gas etc during the quarter. I'll be taking 4,200 a quarter which will total 33,600 by the time i graduate. From the way I understood it, I have 10 years after i graduate to pay it off, which would make it 3,360 a year, 280 a month. Am I doing this right?
Nuro's Wife 10-17-2005, 02:03 PM Don't forget to figure the loan interest into the payment. Also, you can have up to 30 years to repay your loans if you consolidate them.
