View Full Version : Pinecones, acorns & walnuts... What kind of crafts can be made with these??
flamered 10-04-2005, 03:14 PM My daughter who is 8 loves collecting pinecones, acorns & walnuts on our way home from school. We have quite a collection now & she quite happy about making something with them.
Where can i find craft ideas??? Or if anyone has any please share, she would be delighted to have something to make with her collection.
Thanks
mrsdragoness 10-04-2005, 03:38 PM Take pinecones and glue them together to look like a Christmas Tree. Spray paint it green then decorate it with painted acorns, seeds and pods. You can also make ornaments from pine cones.
Here's a couple of websites that have some good ideas too. SOMEWHERE in my basement I have an old craft book that shows you how to make all kinds of pinecone crafts. I'll see if I can find it ;)

venicespirit 10-04-2005, 03:39 PM Unfortunately here in Southern California, where i live anyway - we don't have any pinecones, acorns or walnuts. I wish we did, my kids would probably love craft projects with them. I do have a few ideas though. With the pinecones, i would roll the tips in glue and gold glitter the ends, use a needle and fishing wire and hang em' on the X-mas tree. That would be super cute! I've done that with baby starfish!
With all of the above, i'd go to the 99cents store for picture frames and glue em' on. That would make great xmas gifts to the kids friends, teachers, etc. Just a few ideas.
babygirl350 10-04-2005, 03:47 PM I have seen Christmas and Holiday wreaths made from them and also corsages. Especially with a brightly colored bow tied on it and placed on a coat in the winter time.
I am sure there must be alot of things that she can do with them.
Good luck to you both.
mrsdragoness 10-04-2005, 04:03 PM Be sure to spray your pinecone crafts with a clear sealant so they stay fresh and don't fall apart!

cinderella2004 10-06-2005, 09:56 PM We made a Christmas Tree one year using pine cones. Bought wire mesh, the kind with about 1 inch or so holes in it. We used a piece of wood for the base, maybe about 2' by 2'. We bent the wire mesh into the shape of a large cone and stapled the bottom of it onto the wood platform. We soaked the pinecones in the sink full of water, this shrunk them up. After they were soaked we then inserted them into the holes in the wire mesh. It took all afternoon but the trees were beautiful. In fact I made 2, gave one for a gift and the other is in my attic. Its about 20 yrs old now and I no longer set it up. We decorated it with mini lights and mini ornaments. I was very proud of myself. One thing though the dripping pine cones makes a mess of the kitchen floor but it was worth it, we got many years of joy out of it.
dolphina 10-08-2005, 03:01 PM I remember one time in elementary school.... ... ...
You take a pinecone
tie a string to the top of it
smother it in peanutbutter, (or honey)
then roll it in birdseed
its a birdfeeder. you hang it from a tree.
I remember one time I made this in elementary school, grade 3 I think? But for the memory of it to stick as it has, I mustve had fun doing it?
redphoenixx 10-31-2005, 04:28 AM Dolphina took my idea on the birdfeeder! We used to do those in grade school.
My friends little boy gave me one as a gift (he's so sweet) I was going to get really thing glittery white "snow" and put it on all the edges to make an ornament.
ken'smom 10-31-2005, 04:50 AM well the memories that combination of nature brought back,WOW i just loved picking them up also, my mom was always a real crafty person,so i know that's where i get it. i made an entire village with the egcorns i made all the people, since they allready had hats on. i glued 2 ,one atop the other for the grown ups. singles for the kids,i painted, with a little brush and model paint, every soul in my village. of course the pine cones where all sizes of trees, the wall nuts moutains and scenery. i used magic marker on the piece of plywood to make the roads, popcickle sticks for houses, AHHHHHHHHH the works. i started about this time ,holloween, got the village done for xmas eve. we used it for years for xmas decorations........... THX FOR THE MEMORIES:thumbsup:
